Menyuan’s canola flowers fade by August, but Haibei’s Qilian grasslands and Lenglongling in early September show grass turning yellow but not withered, and snow-capped peaks just appearing. The layers are richer than in summer. The road through Heihe Grand Canyon is rough with many loose stones. Only SUVs are recommended; regular cars risk scraping the chassis. Arrive at Amu Dongso Scenic Area before 9 AM to catch morning mist clinging to the mountainside. That view alone is worth the ticket more than any promo video. ⚠️ At 3,200 meters altitude, avoid running or jumping. I saw a guy get so excited he jumped twice and had to sit down to breathe oxygen. 📍 In Qilian County, try the kang pot lamb. The lamb ribs are fried then stewed, with crispy potato slices on the edges. One pot serves two people, about 50 yuan per person. The temperature difference between day and night is big—below 50°F at night, so a light down jacket is not an exaggeration. 3️⃣ Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan August and September mark the tail end of the rainy season in Xishuangbanna, but don’t be scared off by “rainy season”—most rain falls in the evening, and the days are still sunny and hot. The Chinese Academy of Sciences Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden is the best place in the prefecture to spend a whole day. The giant water lily leaves can hold a small child. Before 10 AM, the light isn’t harsh, making it perfect for photos. 🍜 The garden’s restaurant serves average Dai-style grilled fish. Better to save your appetite for Menglun town. The Dai Ethnic Style Park feels a bit commercial, but the water-splashing square is fun. Bring a change of clothes. Buying raincoats on-site is expensive and ineffective. The Jungle Flight in the Primeval Forest Park is for the brave. If you’re afraid of heights, just walk the boardwalk. ⚠️ The botanical garden ticket plus electric cart is nearly 100 yuan, but the cart is a must. The park is huge, and walking alone can be exhausting. Stay overnight in Gozhuang Xishuangjing. At the night market, pick the busiest barbecue stall. Lemongrass grilled fish with Laotian beer costs about 60 yuan per person and is worth every penny. 4️⃣ Qingyuan City | Guangdong Lianzhou Underground River is one of those “doubt it before entering, amazed after” attractions. The cave stays at 18°C year-round while it’s 35°C outside. Entering feels like turning on natural air conditioning, with cool air hitting your face and goosebumps rising. The boat ride on the dark river passes colorful stalactites lit up by lights. It’s a bit kitschy but impressive—the stalagmites hang down several meters, and the boat glides so close you can reach out and touch them. ⚠️ The cave floor is slippery. Wear non-slip shoes. I saw a girl almost fall into the river wearing flip-flops. The whole tour takes about two hours with few stairs, suitable for elderly and children. 🚄 Take the high-speed train from Guangzhou to Qingyuan Station, then a taxi about one hour away, costing just over 100 yuan. 🍜 At the exit, dried Lianzhou vegetable hearts sell for 10 yuan a pack. They make a sweet soup at home and are more reliable souvenirs than typical trinkets. 5️⃣ Lishui City | Zhejiang The sunrise over Yunhe terraced fields is the most surreal light I’ve seen this year. Arrive at the Jiuqu Yunhuan viewing platform by 5:30 AM. The morning mist hasn’t cleared, and the water in the terraces looks like shattered mirrors reflecting the sky. ⚠️ Check the weather forecast. Don’t go on cloudy days—thick fog will block the view. Dinghu Peak in Jinyun Xiandu is a “worth the ticket with just one glance” spot. The stone slab bridge on Zhutan Mountain, walked in backlight after 4 PM, casts long shadows perfect for silhouette photos. 📍 Outside the scenic area, a baked flatbread stall sells ones filled with preserved vegetables and pork belly. Fresh out of the oven and piping hot, biting into one sends juice splashing. Only 3 yuan each. Qingtian Shimen Cave is better for hiking lovers. The waterfall isn’t big, but the mountain boardwalk is cool and shaded by trees, so you won’t sweat even in September. 🚄 Public transport between Lishui’s attractions is inconvenient. Self-driving or chartering a car is recommended. A day’s car rental costs about 300 yuan, which is affordable split among four people. 6️⃣ Hefei City | Anhui What surprised me most in Hefei wasn’t the science museum or Swan Lake, but Sanhe Ancient Town. It’s not as refined as Wuzhen or Zhouzhuang but hasn’t been over-restored—the bluestone roads are polished shiny, old houses are still inhabited, and pickled vegetables are sun-drying at doorsteps. ⏰ Enter after 5 PM when tour groups leave. The town quiets down, lanterns light up, and the river reflects warm light. That’s the town’s true charm. 🍜 Sanhe rice dumplings are a signature dish, fried golden and crispy. The filling is dried tofu and dried shrimp. Eat them fresh out of the fryer; once cooled, they get greasy. The ancient town has no entrance fee, but the Yang Zhenning former residence inside requires a separate 20 yuan ticket. Skip it if you’re not into physics. ⚠️ Don’t take the human-powered tricycles in town. They charge 80 yuan for a short ride, but you can walk the whole town in 20 minutes. 🚄 A taxi from Hefei South Station takes about 40 minutes. Ride-sharing is cheaper, just over 30 yuan. 7️⃣ Zhoukou City | Henan Zhoukou isn’t a tourist city, but the Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum is seriously underrated. The whole site covers over 800 acres with towering ancient cypress trees. The oldest is said to date back to the Han dynasty, with bark as hard as iron. ⏰ It opens at 8 AM. Arrive early to avoid crowds and hear the rustling of cypress leaves in the wind. It’s very peaceful. Taiqing Palace is in Luyi County, a bit far from the city but worth a separate trip. Laojuntai is where Laozi supposedly taught. The platform isn’t high, but standing there offers an endless view of the plains, a completely different experience from southern mountains. 🍜 Luyi’s specialty is Shiliang dog meat. I was hesitant but tried a bite after a friend’s encouragement. The meat is firm and delicious dipped in garlic paste, perfect with baked flatbread. ⚠️ The two scenic spots are far apart. Don’t visit both in one day or you’ll waste all your time traveling. Accommodation in Zhoukou city is cheap. You can stay in a good chain hotel for 150 yuan. 8️⃣ Yichang City | Hubei The Yangtze Three Gorges section in Yichang has perfect water levels in August and September. The river is as green as jade. At the Three Gorges Folk Village, I recommend only visiting the Longjin Creek area. The boatmen’s rope-pulling show feels a bit staged, but the creek water is truly clear, the bamboo forest truly green, and walking on the boardwalk you can hear the water’s tinkling. The Three Gorges Waterfall is the biggest surprise—wear a raincoat and walk behind the waterfall. The mist hits your face, and in summer it feels like entering a natural ice cellar. ⚠️ Raincoats cost 5 yuan at the scenic entrance. Don’t buy the 10 yuan “thickened” ones outside—they leak just the same. The Qingjiang Gallery boat tour is best in the afternoon. The river breeze and leaning green mountains are much more comfortable than a bus ride. 🍜 Yichang’s radish dumplings are a curious treat. The outside is sticky rice skin, the inside spicy shredded radish. Fried until crispy outside and tender inside, they cost 3 yuan each at street stalls and make a great snack. 🚄 There’s a tourist shuttle from Yichang East Station to the Three Gorges Folk Village. The one-way trip takes two hours. Buying tickets for the shuttle and admission together saves 20 yuan. Traveling in August and September is all about fewer crowds and peace. The plaza in front of Tongtian Hall is especially spacious, so kids can run freely while you leisurely admire the ancient cypress trees. ⏰ Arrive before 9 AM to avoid crowds and enjoy the shade before the sun gets too strong. Take your time walking around without getting tired. For lunch, find a noodle shop outside the scenic area. Meals cost just over 20 per person, much cheaper than inside. In the afternoon, visit Taiqing Palace. ⚠️ Note there are many steps here, so don’t force a stroller. It’s easier to carry your child and stroll around lightly. Stay overnight in Huaiyang District, where hotels are plentiful and dining with kids is convenient. 2️⃣ Hefei | Anhui Sanhe Ancient Town is best visited in the evening. ⏰ The light is perfect just before sunset. The cobblestone streets have been warmed all day, making them pleasantly warm underfoot. 📍 Enter from the south gate and walk along the Xiaonan River. You’ll find rice wine shops and maltose stalls along the way, which will make kids want to stop every few steps. 🍜 Try the Sanhe rice dumplings, freshly fried with a crispy shell and filling of dried tofu and dried shrimp—kids love them too. ⚠️ Avoid visiting at noon when there’s little shade and the sun is harsh. Stay overnight near Swan Lake in the city, where dining options are plentiful and it’s convenient to visit the Hefei Science and Technology Museum the next day. 3️⃣ Urumqi | Xinjiang August in Urumqi is cool enough in the morning and evening to want a jacket, but midday gets truly hot. Visit the International Grand Bazaar in the morning. 📍 Enter from the Jiefang South Road gate and stroll all the way to the pedestrian street. Kids will be drawn to the various dried fruit stalls, sampling raisins and almonds freely. 🍜 For lunch, find a pilaf restaurant on the pedestrian street. Lamb leg pilaf with yogurt comes in large portions—two servings are enough for a family of three. In the afternoon, head to Hongguang Mountain. ⏰ Go after 4 PM when the wind is strong at the summit, offering a panoramic city view. ⚠️ There’s no shade on the mountain, so bring hats and water. Dabancheng is a bit far; if short on time, skip it. You can see the wind turbines on the way to the airport. 4️⃣ Qinhuangdao | Hebei For Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan, I recommend splitting them into two days—one day each. Don’t try to do both in one day. Start with Beidaihe. ⏰ Go to Pigeon Nest Park at 6 AM to watch the sunrise. Carry your still-sleepy child there, then return to the hotel for a nap. Spend the afternoon at the beach splashing in the water. ⚠️ The UV rays at the beach are very strong. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours—don’t skip it. On the second day, visit Shanhaiguan. 📍 Enter through the First Pass Under Heaven gate and climb a section of the city wall with your child to experience the historic “anger for love” moment. 🍜 Have four steamed buns for lunch inside the gate. This old brand has thin skin and generous filling; kids can eat three easily. 🚄 A taxi from Qinhuangdao Station to Beidaihe costs about 30 yuan. Avoid unlicensed roadside taxis. 5️⃣ Shaoguan | Guangdong Danxia Mountain is better suited for slightly older kids who can walk more. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 7 AM when the air is fresh with the scent of damp vegetation. Take the Changlaofeng trail, which has many steps but plenty of shade, so it’s not too hot. 📍 The view suddenly opens up near the Guari Pavilion, with a whole red rock cliff standing before you. Kids will say “wow.” For lunch, eat at a farmhouse at the mountain base. 🍜 Order the mountain water tofu—it’s so tender chopsticks can barely hold it. ⚠️ Avoid Yangyuan Mountain in the afternoon. The path is steep and dangerous to carry kids, plus it’s exposed to the sun. ⚠️ Tickets and cable cars are sold separately. Book in advance on the official WeChat account. Lines on site can be frustratingly long. 6️⃣ Panjin | Liaoning The Red Beach in Panjin is best viewed in September, but late August is still okay as the Suaeda grass starts turning red. ⏰ Enter the scenic area at 5 PM when the light hits at an angle, highlighting the layers of red tidal flats and green reeds. Kids used to city gray walls will find the colors striking. 📍 The end of the boardwalk is the least crowded spot, perfect for quietly watching crabs crawl on the mudflats. ⚠️ Don’t wear white shoes; mud splashes through the boardwalk gaps and won’t come clean. 🍜 For dinner, try Panjin river crab in the city. It’s not peak season yet, but the roe is already interesting. The whole scenic area is flat and stroller-friendly for families. 7️⃣ Lianyungang | Jiangsu Huaguo Mountain and Lian Island are perfect for a two-day trip—one day in the mountains, one by the sea. Arrive at Huaguo Mountain by 8 AM and take the shuttle bus to Yunu Peak. Then walk down to the Water Curtain Cave, where kids will get excited and run ahead. ⚠️ Monkeys on the mountain will snatch plastic bags, so don’t wave food around. On day two, visit Lian Island. 📍 Enter from Dashawan and walk along the seaside boardwalk to Suma Bay. This is the most scenic stretch, with sea on one side and rocks on the other. But ⚠️ there’s no shade, so be sure to wear sun-protective clothing and hats. 🚄 A taxi from Lianyungang Station to Lian Island costs about 50 yuan. It’s best to stay overnight in a guesthouse on the island to catch the sunrise early the next day. 8️⃣ Sanya | Hainan August in Sanya is truly hot, but the sea and hotels make up for it. When traveling with kids, don’t overdo the sightseeing—one or two spots are enough. Wuzhizhou Island has excellent water quality. 📍 Take a 20-minute boat ride from the pier. The island’s electric carts circle the island, keeping kids happy and you out of the sun. ⚠️ Buy boat tickets and admission a day in advance. Buying on site is more expensive and involves long lines. Yalong Bay’s sand is finer than Dadonghai’s, feeling like flour underfoot—perfect for laying a mat and letting kids dig while you relax. Choose either Daxiaodongtian or Nanshan. ⏰ Pick Nanshan for the sea-view Guanyin statue—kids will remember it for a long time. 🍜 For dinner, go to the First Market for seafood. Buy fresh seafood and have it cooked at a nearby restaurant. Avoid eating near the scenic spots—it’s expensive and not fresh. When traveling with kids, don’t pack the itinerary too tightly. One main attraction per day and leave half a day to rest at the hotel. Kids stay calm and you won’t get exhausted. Where is good for a road trip? These 8️⃣ places have fewer crowds and beautiful scenery 1️⃣ Baoshan | Yunnan The early morning in Heshun Ancient Town was the best early wake-up on this road trip. Before 8 AM, the town is almost empty, wild ducks stroll by the wetlands, and if you sit by the laundry pavilion, you can hear the water flowing and birds singing. Don’t rush to buy a combo ticket. First, walk around the outskirts of the ancient town. Enter from the main gate and stroll to the library. After 10 AM, when tourists arrive, it’s time to leave. ⏰ At 2 PM, go to Tengchong Volcano Hot Sea Tourist Area. Upon entering, take the electric cart to Frog Mouth, then walk down the boardwalk. The smell of sulfur mixed with mist hits your face. Ticket prices follow the official daily announcement, but it’s recommended to buy tickets online in advance to avoid lines. ⚠️ Don’t visit Yunfeng Mountain and Beihai Wetland on the same day. Yunfeng Mountain requires a two-hour climb up stairs, so it’s not suitable for those with leg issues. Beihai Wetland is better in the evening when the grass rafts float on the water and the light is best at a slant. Parking is convenient at both places if you drive, but the mountain roads have many curves, so new drivers should go slow. 2️⃣ Zhoukou | Henan Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum and Taiqing Palace are close to each other. I suggest visiting Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum in the morning. After touring, it will be around noon. Have some local snacks at the scenic area entrance, then visit Taiqing Palace in the afternoon. 🍜 The spicy soup with fried dough sticks on the street outside Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum was my favorite breakfast on this trip. The mausoleum area is small and can be covered in two hours. The highlights are the ancient cypress trees and Tongtian Hall. Don’t miss the ancient tree in front of the hall. Taiqing Palace was much quieter than I expected, with few tourists, making it perfect for a slow visit. You have to climb to Laojuntai behind the mountain gate to overlook the entire scenic area with a wide view. The best light is from 3 to 5 PM, which looks especially good on the red walls. ⚠️ Both places are less crowded on Mondays, but Taiqing Palace clears out by 5 PM, so don’t arrive too late. It’s less than a 30-minute drive from Zhoukou city center with good roads, so new drivers won’t have trouble. 3️⃣ Chenzhou | Hunan I advise against visiting Gaoyiling Danxia and Dongjiang Lake Tourist Area in one day—it’s too rushed. Go to Gaoyiling first before 8 AM while the light is still soft. The Danxia rock formations glow red. The full route takes about three hours with many stairs but has rest stops along the way. If you have kids, enter from the south gate for a gentler route. Have a casual lunch at the scenic area entrance, then drive to Dongjiang Lake Tourist Area in the afternoon. 📍 Navigate to Xiaodongjiang Mist Viewing Platform. The mist is thickest from 4 to 6 PM. The fishermen casting nets is a regular show. Stand on the boardwalk and wait, but don’t push to the front or your photos will be full of heads. Mangshan Wuzhifeng is best visited on a separate day. The cable car goes up and down, and it’s windy at the top, so bring a light jacket even in summer. ⏰ Try to catch the first cable car. After 10 AM, tour groups arrive and lines are at least 40 minutes. You can buy grilled fish by the lake, sprinkled with chili powder, to eat while walking. 4️⃣ Yancheng | Jiangsu Dafeng China Milu Park is the most natural-feeling zoo I’ve seen. The deer are much more relaxed than the people. Drive in, roll down your window, and the milu deer will come over for carrots. A bag costs 10 yuan. Don’t buy too many because they lose interest after a while. 📍 The park is divided into walking and driving areas. It’s best to take the electric cart first to get familiar with the route, then walk to the spots you like. The Deer King area is the most worth stopping at. In May and June, the antlers are just growing and fuzzy, great for photos. ⚠️ There is almost no shade in the park, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun in summer. Umbrellas are available for rent at the entrance, but I don’t think they’re necessary if you bring a hat. Two to three hours is enough. No need to stay nearby. It’s a 40-minute drive from Yancheng city with good roads. 5️⃣ Shigatse | Tibet Mount Everest and Tashilhunpo Monastery offer completely different experiences, but both are worth visiting depending on your schedule. My personal advice: if you only have two or three days, spend your time at Everest Base Camp and save Tashilhunpo Monastery for next time. The road to Everest is better than expected but has many checkpoints. You must have your ID and border pass. Stay one night at Rongbuk Monastery, then get up at midnight to see the starry sky and the Milky Way with the naked eye. ⏰ Before 8 AM is the best time to see the golden sunlight on the mountain. After 9 AM, clouds usually appear. Tashilhunpo Monastery is in Shigatse city and can be toured in half a day. The murals and thangkas are well preserved, but no indoor photography is allowed, so please respect the rule. ⚠️ The monastery closes entry at 4 PM, so don’t schedule too late. The altitude is nearly 4,000 meters, so walk slowly and carry altitude sickness medicine. 6️⃣ Chizhou | Anhui Mount Jiuhua is very windy—really windy. I went in mid-October, and the wind at the summit was so strong it was hard to stand, and my hair was wild. But the scenery is worth it. At sunset, the sea of clouds rolls like standing on the ocean. I recommend taking the cable car up and walking down. 📍 The cable car goes to Baisuigong, then follow the stairs down, passing the Flesh Body Hall and Huacheng Temple, ending at the visitor center at the foot of the mountain. The whole trip takes about three hours. If your knees aren’t strong, don’t push yourself. You can take the cable car back the same way. 🍜 There’s a vegetarian restaurant on Jiuhua Street at the foot of the mountain. Their tofu tastes better than meat. It costs 30 yuan per person and is all you can eat. ⚠️ Bottled water on the mountain costs 10 yuan each. Bring two bottles and don’t carry too much. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Summer is hot and stuffy, and winter stairs can be icy, so I don’t recommend those seasons. 7️⃣ Longyan | Fujian It takes an hour and a half to drive between the Tulou (Yongding) and Changting Ancient City, so don’t schedule both on the same day. Visit Yongding Tulou in the morning when sunlight streams through the round building’s top, perfect for photos. 📍 Chengqi Lou is the largest Tulou, still inhabited by Hakka people. An old lady sells tea eggs at the entrance, two for 5 yuan, very flavorful. Changting Ancient City is better in the afternoon. Walk the ancient city wall at dusk. The night view with lights is better than daytime. There are many snack stalls in the ancient city. Try the stewed pig kidney and taro dumplings, both local specialties. Guanzhaishan is not far from Changting. Hiking enthusiasts can visit on the way. Half a day is enough for a round trip. ⚠️ Some people in the Tulou scenic area will try to sell you silver jewelry. Ignore them; it’s all cheap Yiwu goods. If you drive, the mountain roads have many curves but are smooth. Drive slowly and you’ll be fine. If you want to stay overnight, the guesthouses in Changting Ancient City offer good value. You can get a river view room for just over 100 yuan. 8️⃣ Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai Riyue Mountain and Guide National Geopark fit perfectly into a road trip loop. Riyue Mountain is where Princess Wencheng passed through on her way to Tibet. Prayer flags flutter on the hillside, and the wind is so strong you can barely stand. ⏰ Morning is best to avoid harsh light and backlighting in photos. In the afternoon, drive to Guide National Geopark. The landforms have rich colors—earth yellow, ochre red, and gray-white layers stacked like a sliced mille-feuille cake. The park has electric carts. If your stamina is average, take the cart to the innermost area, then walk out slowly. 📍 The boardwalks in the park are well built, making it easy for elderly and children to walk. ⚠️ The altitude is over 3,000 meters, so sun protection is essential. The UV rays are strong enough to make you question reality. 🍜 There’s a yak meat soup restaurant in Guide County. The soup is fresh and the meat tender. Eat it with white flatbread for warmth and fullness. If you can stay overnight in Guide County, you can watch the sunrise at Huangheqing Bridge the next morning. The water is so clear it doesn’t look like the Yellow River. The biggest worry about road trips isn’t the distance but arriving somewhere that’s not worth it. Don't miss the red wall corridor of Guandi Temple in the city center. The sunset passing through the columns creates striped light and shadow, perfect for casual Hanfu half-body portraits🏯. In the evening, head to the Shaying River Ecological Corridor to catch the sunset. The river surface is covered with soft orange light, and the city's neon lights are framed with their reflections in the water, creating an excellent atmosphere🌅. 🍜 Food recommendations Zhoukou's appetite is awakened by Hulatang🥣. Xiaoyao Town Hulatang uses only pepper, no chili, and the soup is thick and clear. Eating it with youmoutou or shuijianbao is how locals enjoy it daily. Huaiyang's Fangbudai Braised Chicken is bright red, tender, and flavorful, savory and rich without being greasy; Longhu Braised Pucai has the fresh sweetness of lake seafood🐟. Luyi's Mahu and Qiuji Shaobing are another combination. The shaobing is charcoal-grilled, crispy outside and tender inside, fragrant and not greasy even when eaten plain. Shenqiu Gujia Mo is an intangible cultural heritage delicacy, vividly shaped and long-lasting; Ningping Mahua is crispy but not crumbly, crunchy but not hard, making it the most suitable souvenir🎁. 🗺️ Itinerary planning Three days and two nights is just right. No rushing through attractions, no switching hotels, just waking up naturally and heading out each day. Three days of a relaxed stay, adults don’t get tired, kids have plenty to do—this is what family travel should be like. 01 Xuancheng | Anhui Chaji ancient village is much quieter than Hong village. Kids might not understand sacrificial culture, but when you point to a thousand-year-old tree and say “it’s older than your great-great-grandfather,” their eyes will widen in amazement. 🍜 For lunch, try Hakka stuffed tofu in Yanling County. The first stop with kids is Tiantangzhai. Don’t rush to take the cable car; start by walking a trail at the foot of the mountain. Kids can see water seeping through rocks, crouch down to touch it, and pull their hands back from the cold—that’s the best natural lesson. ⏰ Arrive before 9 AM. The light slants into the forest, the waterfall mist hits your face, and with fewer people, the experience is better. In the afternoon, head to Wanfo Lake. It’s great for a boat ride. The lake is wide and breezy, so it’s not stuffy. ⚠️ The last boat leaves at 4:30 PM. Don’t arrive too close to that time; long lines might make you miss it. Food inside the park is pricey. Bring your own snacks and water to save enough for two bottles of ice-cold cola for the kids. 2️⃣ Wuhan | Hubei Wuhan’s summer is like a furnace, but there are ways to travel with kids. At Yellow Crane Tower Park, don’t just focus on climbing the tower. There’s a statue of Yue Fei downstairs. Kids will ask “Who is he?” and you can tell a bit of history. East Lake is much bigger than West Lake. Rent a family bike and ride along the lakeside path. There’s plenty of shade and a cool breeze. If it gets too hot at noon, head to Songyang Temple. The temple is quiet with ancient trees towering overhead. Sitting there calms the mind. In the afternoon, visit Huangpi Mulan Cultural Ecological Tourism Area. It’s large, but don’t try to see everything—just the grassland area is enough. ⏰ Around 5 PM, the sun isn’t as harsh. Kids can run and jump on the grassy slopes to burn off energy. 🚄 It takes over an hour by subway plus bus from downtown. A taxi costs about 80 yuan. For families with young kids, taking a taxi directly is recommended to avoid hassle. 3️⃣ Jincheng | Shanxi Huangcheng Xiangfu often scares people off when they hear “ancient architecture,” thinking kids won’t understand. Actually, it’s the opposite. Inside the mansion is Heshan Tower, an ancient defense structure. Kids get excited climbing up and down, asking “Why is this tower so tall?” and “How do you hide when enemies come?” It’s way more interesting than dry textbook lessons. 📍 The street outside the mansion sells millet pancakes for 5 yuan each, freshly made and very crispy. ⏰ Morning visits are best. The light is good for photos without backlighting. Afternoons get crowded with tour groups, making the corridors hard to walk through. ⚠️ There’s a paid bronze bell performance inside for 40 yuan per person. Kids lose interest after 5 minutes, so don’t waste money on it. The whole visit takes about 3 hours, which is just right for kids’ stamina. 4️⃣ Ordos | Inner Mongolia Xiangshawan and Genghis Khan Mausoleum sound like two extremes, but visiting both in one day is doable. Go to Xiangshawan in the morning. Kids go wild seeing the desert, taking off shoes to step on the sand, yelling because it’s hot but reluctant to leave. ⏰ Be sure to arrive early. Before 9 AM, the sand isn’t fully heated, so it feels warm under bare feet. Sand sliding costs 20 yuan per ride, cheaper than amusement parks, and kids can play until they don’t want to leave. In the afternoon, visit Genghis Khan Mausoleum. Don’t expect kids to understand the history, but the yurt architecture and huge sulede (ceremonial pole) will make them say “so cool.” ⚠️ No photos allowed inside the mausoleum. The desert is windy, so bring a neck gaiter for the kids or they’ll get sand in their mouths. 5️⃣ Quzhou | Zhejiang Quzhou surprised me most with Kaihua Gen Palace Buddha Kingdom. Kids love eating them while walking. ⏰ After 4 PM, the town has fewer tourists. The light turns the old house walls golden, perfect for photos. ⚠️ Jianglang Mountain has many steps. Not recommended for very young kids. Just strolling the ancient town is enough. 6️⃣ Zhoukou | Henan Many don’t know much about Zhoukou, but Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum is a great place to introduce kids to traditional culture. The mausoleum has ancient cypress trees, some over a thousand years old. Kids hug the trunks asking “How old is this tree?” and you can tell the story of Fuxi drawing the Bagua. 📍 At the mausoleum entrance, there’s “Nini dog,” a local intangible cultural heritage. It’s a colorful clay animal figurine for 10 yuan each. Kids love holding them. In the afternoon, visit Taiqing Palace. It’s much quieter with a faint incense scent, perfect for resting after a tiring morning. ⏰ After 2 PM is best. Fewer people and you can find a stone bench in the courtyard to sit. ⚠️ Both places are cultural and better suited for kids in elementary school or older. Preschoolers might find it boring. Bring some snacks to eat while walking to keep them going longer. 7️⃣ Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou Libo Zhangjiang is what I call the ultimate water play spot for kids. The water at Xiaoqikong is emerald green and crystal clear. Kids want to jump right in. The park has a special area for visitors to step in the water. The water barely covers the ankles and feels refreshingly cool—summer lifesaver. ⏰ Be sure to enter the park in the morning. The light on the water is best then. Afternoons get crowded and the water gets murkier. With kids, don’t do the whole route. Just the section from Xiaoqikong to Cuigu Waterfall is enough, about 2 hours, so kids won’t get tired. 🍜 At the park entrance, grilled corn is sold for 5 yuan a cob, very fragrant. ⚠️ After wetting their feet, remember to change kids into dry socks or they might get blisters from walking too long. Overall, Libo is affordable. Tickets aren’t cheap but worth it. 8️⃣ Lingshui | Hainan Lingshui has fewer people than Sanya and cleaner seas. Take a boat to Boundary Island. It’s about a 10-minute ride. Kids get very excited on their first boat trip. The island has a marine theater with dolphin shows twice a day, at 10 AM and 3 PM. Kids watch without blinking. 📍 There’s a reef area by the beach where you can find small crabs at low tide. Kids can play there for an hour. The monkeys on Nanwan Monkey Island are free-range and will approach people for food. ⚠️ Never take plastic bags out in front of the monkeys—they’ll grab them and scare the kids. ⏰ Morning visits to Nanwan Monkey Island are best. The monkeys are active then. In the afternoon, it gets hot and they hide in the shade. 🍜 Lingshui sour rice noodles are a must-try. They’re sour and spicy, served with sea snail meat, appetizing for both adults and kids. These 8 places are my personally tested picks where adults don’t suffer. 01 Turpan | Xinjiang Don’t just think Turpan is hot—actually, it has its perks for traveling with kids. ⏰ Arrive at Flaming Mountain by 8 AM. The ground isn’t scorching yet. A half-hour walk is enough. Don’t buy camel rides; kids get scared, and you’ll be baking in the sun nearby. 📍 After that, drive straight to Kumtag Desert. The highlight isn’t climbing dunes but the wooden boardwalk at the desert’s edge. There’s plenty of shade, kids can walk barefoot on the sand, and you can relax in a pavilion with a breeze. 🍜 For lunch, head back to the city for some tossed noodles. Find a small local spot with local cars parked outside. The fried pork tossed noodles cost 18 yuan per serving. Kids can eat half, you eat half—just right. ⚠️ Avoid outdoor activities from 2 PM to 5 PM. Take a nap at the hotel, then go to Grape Valley in the evening. The secret to traveling with kids is off-peak timing. When the sun is strongest, you’re in the air conditioning, kids are doing puzzles, and no one loses out. 02 Shiyan | Hubei Shiyan’s most underrated spot is Wudang Mountain, but don’t plan to hike to the summit with kids. 🚄 Taxi from the high-speed rail station to the mountain gate costs about 30 yuan. Buy the scenic area shuttle ticket and get off at Taizipo. 📍 The red wall at Taizipo is great for photos and flat enough for kids to run around while you keep up. At the Nine-Bend Yellow River Wall, kids will count the turns themselves; you just remind them to slow down. 🍜 There’s not much food on the mountain, so bring some bread and fruit. At the Taoist vegetarian restaurant in Wudang Mountain town, meals cost about 40 yuan per person. The food is mild and not spicy, suitable for kids. ⚠️ Don’t carry big bags uphill. There are lockers at the cable car entrance for 10 yuan. If you have elders and kids, take the cable car up and walk down. Walk the flat Xiaoyao Valley path where the sound of the stream is loud, kids pick up stones, and you enjoy the trees. Both of you will feel relaxed. 03 Meizhou | Guangdong Meizhou is an underrated place for family outings, especially Yannanfei Tea Plantation. ⏰ Enter the park after 3 PM when the sun is lower. The tea fields spread out in layers of green, and the breeze carries the scent of tea. 📍 Don’t rush to take the electric cart. Walk the tea field trail first. Kids can watch the tea pickers’ hand movements while you stand on the viewing platform surrounded by terraces. 🍜 The Weirong Restaurant inside the park serves salt-baked chicken and stuffed tofu, both tender and soft. Kids are not picky here. ⚠️ The best part is the tea ceremony experience. For 30 yuan per pot, kids learn to brew tea with the master while you scroll on your phone. This half hour is the quietest moment of the whole trip. Stay overnight at the hotel inside Yannanfei, with rooms that have small balconies. In the morning, open the door to the tea mountains, kids count birds on the balcony, and you can sleep in until 9 AM. Meizhou city also has the Hakka Museum, which is cool indoors and explains the structure of the Weirong houses. Kids listen like it’s a block-building game and get quite absorbed. 04 Zhoukou | Henan Zhoukou offers a cultural route for families, but it’s far from boring. 📍 At Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum Cultural Tourism Area, don’t rush in. Rent an audio guide for 20 yuan. Kids listening to the story of Fuxi drawing the Bagua is better than you making it up. The park has many ancient cypress trees and continuous shade, so it’s not hot even in summer. 🍜 At the entrance, compressed steamed buns cost 1 yuan each. Kids snack on them while you have a bowl of spicy soup—a proper Henan breakfast. ⚠️ Taiqing Palace is in Luyi, about an hour’s drive from Taihao Mausoleum. Skip it if you’re short on time; Taihao Mausoleum alone is enough for half a day. ⏰ It’s best to visit Taihao Mausoleum in the morning and Taiqing Palace in the afternoon. It’s quieter with fewer people. Kids can run in the open space in front of the temple while you sit on the stone steps watching incense smoke rise and feel calm. When traveling with kids to places like this, don’t expect them to understand much—just plant a seed. 05 Hefei | Anhui The easiest place to take kids in Hefei is Sanhe Ancient Town. 🚄 It’s about a 50-minute taxi ride from downtown or take the tourist shuttle directly to the entrance. 📍 The ancient town is free to enter. It has small bridges and flowing water. When kids get tired, take a rickshaw for 30 yuan around the town. The breeze blows, kids see new things, and you get a break. 🍜 For lunch, try Sanhe rice dumplings in the town. Freshly made, the skin is crispy, filled with dried tofu and dried shrimp. Kids can eat one bite after another. ⚠️ Don’t buy the “traditional maltose candy” at the entrance; it’s expensive and sticky. Walk 200 meters inside to find an elderly lady making it fresh for 5 yuan. ⏰ Around 5 PM, when tourists leave and the light softens, the bluestone streets glow golden in the sunset. Kids throw stones on the bridge while you buy a cup of mung bean soup at the bridgehead. This is the right way to travel with kids. 06 Anshan | Liaoning At Qianshan in Anshan, choose the right trail for kids. Don’t try to conquer the whole mountain; the Beigou trail is enough. 📍 Enter from the main gate, take the electric cart to the cable car station at Wufoding. Kids can walk this part themselves; it’s shaded with gentle steps. The cable car ride offers wide views. Kids press their faces to the window watching the mountains while you snap photos. 🍜 There’s roasted corn on the mountain for 10 yuan a cob, fragrant and sweet. Kids use it as a hiking stick. ⚠️ Qianshan tickets cost 80 yuan, and the cable car one way is 30 yuan. Don’t skimp on this; otherwise, carrying kids up for two hours will leave your legs useless the next day. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 8 AM and be down by 1 PM. Have a meal of Anshan’s specialty sauerkraut copper hot pot in the city for about 50 yuan per person. Kids will sweat happily eating it. Take a nap at the hotel in the afternoon, then stroll at 219 Park in the evening. It’s a local spot for families with many benches by the lake. You sit while kids chase pigeons. 07 Tonghua | Jilin Tonghua is a hidden gem, mainly for seeing Goguryeo cultural relics with kids. 📍 The Stele of King Gwanggaeto and General’s Tomb are close by and walkable. Kids don’t recognize the characters on the stone but get wide-eyed hearing the guide say “Ancient generals had such big tombs.” 🍜 For lunch in Ji’an city, try Korean-style hot pot. A big pot arrives bubbling with tofu, beef, and rice sausage. Kids mix the broth with rice and can eat two bowls. ⚠️ The rapeseed flower sea in Ji’an is seasonal, only from late June to mid-July. Don’t go after that; it’s just bare fields. ⏰ Visit the flower sea after 4:30 PM when the light is soft and you can avoid tour groups. There’s a wooden boardwalk in the fields where kids won’t get lost and you can take great photos. Stay overnight in Ji’an, a surprisingly clean small town. Walk along the river path with a cool breeze while kids skateboard on flat ground. You can finally catch your breath. 08 Nyingchi | Tibet Nyingchi is the farthest of these 8 cities but the most comfortable part of Tibet for families. 📍 Don’t rush to Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon right away. The high altitude can make kids uncomfortable. Stay one night at Basongcuo Lake. The lake island is flat, kids throw stones by the shore while you watch the snow-capped mountains’ reflection from the viewing platform. 🍜 Tibetan food at Basongcuo includes butter tea and yak meat buns. Kids might not like butter tea but the yak meat buns are fragrant; they can eat three in a row. ⚠️ The Yunnan-Tibet route has many sharp turns. If driving yourself, be careful. It’s better to hire a car with a driver for about 800 yuan a day to save hassle. ⏰ In Bomi, wildflowers bloom along the roadside in June and July. Kids watch from the car, shouting “purple flowers” and “white flowers.” You stop to pick a flower for them. Don’t hike the entire Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. Take the park shuttle to the viewing platform. It’s windy, so bring a light down jacket for the kids and one for yourself. I went the other way, finding six underrated places with fewer people, cooler weather, and costs less than half of popular destinations. Don’t just visit the city wall at Shanhaiguan. Enter from the west gate at 4 PM. The slanting light shines through the brick gaps, casting long shadows that look ten times better than at noon. ⚠️ Don’t take the tricycle tours at the scenic entrance that charge 80 yuan for a loop. Walking takes only about 20 minutes.
