After a day of enjoying Mount Tsukuba, I drove to Mito that night 🚗 I stayed at "Kinoie Guesthouse Annex" that night. I booked a mixed-gender dormitory room. The room was about 6 tatami mats in size, with bunk beds lined up, and one of them was my bed for the night. The beds were separated only by curtains, a very simple style. It's nowhere near a luxurious hotel, but the place was clean, and since I only needed a place to sleep after sightseeing that day, it was perfectly adequate 😊 And what surprised me most was the price! In November 2024, when I stayed there, there was a discount, and it was only 2,495 yen per night! 😳 I thought that for a day of travel where "all I need is a place to sleep!", something this simple is perfectly fine. Currently, "Kinoie Guesthouse Annex" is still offered as a mixed-gender dormitory in a renovated old house, and guests can use the kitchen, free Wi-Fi, showers, and washing machine. There was also a courtyard with a relaxing space. And near this inn, I found "Teuchi Soba Ninomae" (Handmade Soba Ninomae). The soba served here was quite special. They use "Hitachi Aki Soba," a representative soba from Ibaraki Prefecture. In particular, they use very precious buckwheat grown by hand on traditional steep slopes in areas such as Akatsuchi-cho in the Kanasago district and Tanaya-cho in the Suifu district of Hitachiota City. The soba is milled in-house as needed and carefully made. I just happened to stumble upon this restaurant nearby and went in, but later I was surprised to learn that "I was eating such precious soba!" Currently, this restaurant has been selected as one of the "Soba EAST Top 100 Restaurants 2025." I entered at 7:50 a.m. in late February — main garden open, no fee before 9 a.m. (after 9, ¥320 adult; Kobuntei villa extra ¥230; combined Kodokan+Kairakuen+Kobuntei set ¥730). Tokugawa Nariaki built it in 1842 as a “garden to enjoy together” — rare for the era, open to commoners. 3,000 plum trees, 100 varieties, plus moso bamboo, cedar, and Lake Senba below. The path Nariaki intended runs shadow-to-light: front gate → Ichinokido → bamboo grove → Togyokusen spring → Kobuntei → plum slope. I did it backwards from the east gate and regretted it — the bamboo gloom hits after the brightness, not before, so the release at Kobuntei vanished. Fix that. The tea house near Kobuntei sells matcha + plum sweet ¥500, cash only, opens 9. Early birds get the grove silent; by 10 the plum festival crowd (Feb–Mar) fills the slope with selfie sticks. Practical: wear soft soles, the paths are packed earth and slip after rain. Combine with Kodokan (8 min walk, ¥420) same morning — both built by Nariaki, one to study, one to rest. Don’t drive in plum season, parking is ¥1,000 and full by 8:30. A mistake I made once: coming in April for “plum” — they’re gone, it’s just green. February 20–March 20 is the window. Would you pay ¥320 to walk a famous garden, or arrive at 7:50 and owe nothing but attention? The gatekeeper waved me through at 7:52. The grove was free.

Kodokan opened in 1841 — Japan’s largest domain school, teaching Confucianism, Dutch studies, medicine, astronomy, and swords. Admission ¥420 (¥210 kids, ¥210 over-70), 9–5 Apr–Sep, 9–4:30 Oct–Feb, closed Dec 29–31. I came at 11 a.m. after the plum grove, and the contrast was the point: Kairakuen is soft and floral, Kodokan is timber, gravel, and rule. The walk is a rectangle — main gate (Important Cultural Property) → lecture hall → Shizendo (the room where Tokugawa Yoshinobu confined himself after returning power) → martial arts square → 800-plum garden inside the compound. I spent 50 minutes and could’ve done 20, but the Shizendo floor squeaks in exactly one plank, and a guard told me Yoshinobu stood there. That’s the slow value — not exhibits, but load-bearing wood. Cash only at the desk, no card. No photos inside Shizendo (respect it). Combine the set ticket with Kairakuen if doing both — ¥240 saved, valid across days. A common error: treating Kodokan as a “side stop” after the garden — it deserves its own hour, especially the martial square where you can hear the echo of bokken drills. Decided to head to Kairakuen so we drove and parked next to the park. It was a lovely day, sunny and windy. Lovely swan posing elegantly next to the cherry blossom tree. During the season, all you need to do is just find a park and walk in, you will find yourself surrounded by lovely flowers. Anyway it was until the very end of the walk that we realized we have not entered the Kairakuen which requires entrance fee. We have thought the park that we walked was Kairakuen. 😅 Blur me who did not do the research well. It was a while ago, but it was in full bloom and it was so beautiful!! We went into the plum garden and took pictures and walked around surrounded by plum blossoms. 📸 .
