Moroni travel guide and discussion

Comoros is the perfect destination for those who love quiet islands, volcanoes, beaches, and a unique blend of African and Arabic vibes. For your first trip, I recommend spending 6 days on Grande Comore. There's no need to rush between islands, especially since inter-island boat standards can be inconsistent and life jackets might be lacking. 📅 6-Day Itinerary Day 1 — Moroni 🇰🇲 Explore the historic Medina, visit the mosques, and wander through the Volo Volo market. End the day relaxing by the sea—keep it local for your first day. Day 2 — North Coast 🌊 Take a road trip up north to Mitsamiouli, see Lac Salé, and explore the northern beaches. It’s a great day to drive through local villages and admire the volcanic coastline. Day 3–4 — Mount Karthala 🌋 The ultimate highlight for adventure lovers. Standing at approximately 2,361 meters, reaching the summit of this active volcano is best done as a 2-day, 1-night trek. A guide is essential as the trail is long and weather conditions shift rapidly. Always check the latest activity status before heading up. Day 5 — Rest & Coastal Chill After the trek, take it easy. Enjoy the ocean, savor local cuisine, and just relax. Avoid jumping into another hike right away. Day 6 — Moroni & Departure Keep your final day flexible. Road conditions and island weather can often cause travel delays. 🏨 Recommended Accommodations If you're looking for a beachfront stay with full amenities, Itsandra Beach Hotel & Resort is a great pick. For those who want to be close to Moroni with help arranging airport transfers or excursions, Retaj Moroni Hotel is a solid option, as they offer tour services. 🍴 Dining In Moroni, check out L’expatrié Restaurant or look for local seafood spots. Must-try dishes include Langouste (lobster), grilled fish, Pilao, Mkatra Foutra, and anything prepared with coconut and spices—a true reflection of African, Arab, and Indian Ocean influences. 📌 Pro-Tips I recommend visiting between May and October when the weather is drier, making it ideal for road trips and trekking. The period from January to May carries a higher risk of tropical cyclones. Carry both Comorian Francs and Euros in cash. ATMs are scarce, and credit cards are not widely accepted. Regarding visas, double-check requirements for your specific passport before flying. Currently, many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Hahaya Airport for around €30, provided the passport is valid for at least 6 months. However, Thai citizens should verify these conditions with their airline or Comoros authorities before booking. ✨ Summary 6 days is the sweet spot: Moroni → North Coast → Mitsamiouli → 2 days at Mount Karthala → Seaside rest → Return. Comoros is for those who crave off-the-beaten-path gems, raw nature, and a slow pace of travel, rather than luxury resorts or high-end infrastructure. 🇰🇲🌋🌊

Next trip Comoros

Located on the coast of Grande Comore Island in Comoros, this seaside hotel opens directly onto a pristine private bay. The entire coastline is formed by dark volcanic basalt rocks, with soft white sand nestled between jagged black stones. Tall and short coconut trees are scattered along the cliffs, and seaside guesthouses are hidden among lush greenery on the cliffs. At dawn, the sea is exceptionally calm, with nearshore waters blending into a transparent gradient of turquoise. Gentle waves softly lap the shore repeatedly. Local fishermen set out to sea in traditional dugout canoes, slowly beginning the island’s daily routine. There is no tourist noise, only the sea breeze, waves, and morning misty clouds, fully capturing the authentic atmosphere of this lesser-known Indian Ocean island. Far from the bustling tourist areas, the entire bay is quiet and leisurely. The soft light of sunrise spreads across the sea, embodying the unique relaxed and healing vibe of this isolated island.

I was just passing along the coast of Comoros in the evening when I saw this. Freshly caught fish, some of them huge, simply laid out and sold by the roadside. No proper fish market. No fancy stalls. Just the sea right beside them, the evening catch, and people stopping by to choose their fish. Comoros is still a very simple and unpolished place in many ways. And maybe that is exactly what made scenes like this so interesting to me. You are not looking at something created for tourists. You are just passing by and watching how people live.

My first stop in Comoros was Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport in Moroni. It is a small and simple airport, but the view around it is quite memorable — open runway, palm tree, mountains in the distance, and a wide blue sky that immediately gives an island feeling. The airport does not feel overly commercial or busy. Everything moves at a slower, more local pace. I processed my visa at the VIP area, and one detail that left an impression was seeing the staff still recording information by hand in a logbook. For a first-time visitor, the airport gives a very honest introduction to Comoros: simple, natural, and a little old-school in its way of operating. #comoros #moroni #grandecomore #islandtravel 抵達科摩羅 Moroni 的 Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport。

Comoros, blending island hopping with wildlife encounters 🇰🇲🌊 Start on Grande Comore – explore Moroni's medina and hike Mount Karthala's active crater . Fly to Mohéli – snorkel in the Marine Park with sea turtles, spot Livingstone's fruit bats, and watch green turtles nest at Itsamia beach (July–October for whales) . End on Anjouan – wander Mutsamudu's stone town and hike to waterfalls . Tips: Best months May–October. Bring cash (no ATMs on Mohéli), pack sturdy boots for volcanoes . Learn basic French – English is rare . Try langouste (lobster) and coconut fish stew.

The hotel was decent considering it was in moroni. However, the bathroom needs renovation and the furniture is old. The pizza at the restaurant in the hotel was really good and its worth a try. Lastly the staff was very friendly as well.
