The city personally tested, regret not going earlier
01 Shanghai
The Outer Banks is crowded with people. I advise you to change your mind. Drilling into Yuyuan Garden at nine in the morning, the Jiuqu Bridge has not yet been captured by the tour group, drinking a cup of green tea at the Lake Heart Pavilion and listening to my grandmother talk in Shanghainese is the right way to experience Shanghai.
🍜Remember to order fresh meat filling for the steamed buns at Nanxiang Bun Shop. Crab powder is expensive and greasy. Don’t ask me why.
Go to the Expo in the afternoon, don't just take pictures of the China Pavilion.
📍Free admission to the Palace of Chinese Arts, the permanent exhibition inside is more worth seeing than the temporary exhibition, the top observation deck can overlook the entire Pudong skyline.
⚠️ The museum is closed every Monday. Don't go in vain. In the evening, walk to the riverside trail and watch the sunset dye the Lupu Bridge golden, which is more relaxing than the night view of the Bund.
The next day it was left for the Guangfulin Cultural Site. The underwater museum is the highlight, with the roof floating on the water like a drifting box. Renting a guide is recommended, otherwise, you’ll just think it’s “just a park.” After you get out, take a taxi to the Disney Resort, if you are on a budget and don’t get in, Disneytown’s Star Wish Park is free to enter and watch the side view of the castle light show in the evening to save hundreds of dollars in ticket money.
02 Haikou|Hainan
Haikou is not a cheap alternative to Sanya, it has its own personality. Go to the old street of the arcade at 7am. The tourists haven't gotten up yet. The Nanyang-style riding downstairs, the old man's tea shop is already hot.
📍 Turn in at the entrance of Shui Alley, Chan Kee spicy soup rice with fried dough sticks, ten dollars to eat full.
🍜 Don't eat seafood powder, Haikou people prefer to eat pickled noodles for breakfast, thick sauce wrapped in thin noodles, add a spoonful of yellow lantern chili, immediately refreshing.
Wu Gong Temple is worth spending two hours. Don't rush to see the flowers. The ancient trees inside are more impressive than the architecture. The hundreds of years old banyan tree covers the sky and the sun. It is comfortable to sit on a stone bench and relax.
⚠️ There are few people after 3pm, the light through the trees is especially easy to take beautiful photos.
Crater Park is suitable for evening visits, climb to the commanding heights of the estuary and watch the whole city light up in the twilight. Don't buy volcanic eggs at the entrance of scenic spots. They are expensive and ordinary. After going down the mountain, go to the nearby village of Rong Tang. The old house made of volcanic stone is still occupied. Grandma sells home-brewed sugar cane juice for five dollars a cup. It's sweet to the teeth.
03 Karamay | Xinjiang
Devil’s City isn’t “castle-like”, it’s a ruin the wind has carved out over tens of thousands of years. Entry at 6pm, the sun is slanting, the shadow of the Yadan landscape stretches long, each mound resembling the back of a giant beast.
⏰ Don't come at noon, the light is too hard, the pictures are all white and blurry. Take the scenic minibus to the third stop and get off, walk two kilometers in. There are so few people that you can hear the sound of wind whirling in the rock crevices.
⚠️ Do not wear slippers, the ground is sunburned to the feet, and wind and sand, camera lens remember to put a protective cover. Half an hour before sunset is the golden hour, when the mound turns orange-red, resembling a burning flame. Don't leave in a hurry after you come out. At the starry sky observation point at the entrance of the scenic spot, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye after 10pm. You can't see this kind of density in the city.
04 Jinan | Shandong
Jinan’s soul is in the water, not in the cruise ship of Daming Lake. Go to Baotu Spring at 6am. The tickets are expensive, but worth it. The three springs are bubbling, crystal clear, and the carp swim under the water like in slow motion.
📍 There is a tea house by the spring, ten dollars a cup of spring water tea, sitting on the stone railing to drink, listening to the sound of spring water, more healing than any coffee shop.
🍜 Don't leave in a hurry after seeing the spring water. The pork soup dumplings from the straw bun shop across the street are thin and juicy, with a bowl of sweet foam, which is standard for breakfast in old Jinan.
Go to Qianfoshan in the afternoon. Don't climb from the main entrance. It's tiring and boring.
📍 Enter from the east gate, walk along the gentle slope of the mountain road, half an hour to the top of the mountain, you can overlook the whole city of Jinan, Daming Lake like a piece of emerald inlaid between the buildings.
⚠️ The cableway at the summit is closed at 5:30 pm. If you want to sit, plan your time in advance. After going down the hill, go to Hibiscus Street, don't eat those celebrity barbecue skewers, turn into the old-fashioned oil spinning in the alley, just out of the oven, hot and crispy, onion fragrant, two dollars a piece.
05 Guiyang | Guizhou
Summer in Guiyang is the envy of air conditioners. Go to Tianhe Tan at 9am. Don't just walk outside. Take a boat into the cave. The stalactites look like an alien palace under the lights. The temperature inside the cave is ten degrees lower than outside. Remember to bring a thin jacket. After I came out, I took a photo by the waterfall. The mist hit my face and it was so cool that I didn’t want to leave.
Go to Qingyan Ancient Town in the afternoon. Don't rush in the main street.
📍 Enter from Ding Guangmen and walk towards the back street. The stone alley is so quiet that you can hear your own footsteps.
🍜Stewed pork legs are a must-eat, soft and deboned, but don't buy them at the entrance. Walk in for 300 meters, Wang Kee's ingredients are more plentiful.
⚠️ Don't buy the rice tofu in the ancient town packaged in scenic spots. The ones mixed at the roadside stalls are only delicious. The sour and spicy flavor is wrapped in the rice fragrance.
The next day we went to Gaopo Cloud Peak Grassland, 1600 above sea level, the wind was strong enough to blow the hat away. The prairie wasn’t big, but the visibility was wide and the clouds were so low that you could reach out and pluck them. Perfect for picnics, bring a picnic mat, buy some curry and beer and sleep for an afternoon. Flower Creek Park is just on the way back. Take a walk around the road. The lotus flowers at Shili River Beach are in full bloom in July. Renting a bicycle to ride along the river saves effort than walking.
06 Shang Rao | Jiangxi
Sanqingshan is not "Little Yellow Mountain", it is more primitive than Huangshan. I took the cableway up the mountain at 6am. The fog has not yet dissipated. The peaks are looming in the sea of clouds, like an ink painting.
📍 Take the Nanqingyuan Loop Line, the two iconic attractions of Giant Python Out of the Mountain and Oriental Goddess are on this line, do not go back.
⏰ Arrive at the West Coast Canyon before noon, the glass canyon is suspended on the cliff, at your feet is a thousand meters abyss, do not look down if you are afraid of heights.
Go to Wong Leng in the afternoon. Don't just see all the autumn scenery. There are rapeseed flowers in the spring and red maples in the autumn, but there are few people in the summer, and the stone roads of the ancient village are washed and shiny by the rain.
🍜The Tianjie restaurant in the village, the tofu and steamed pork are locally made, more authentic than the chain stores outside the scenic spot.
⚠️ The ropeway in Yuling stops at 5:30 pm. If you want to take pictures of the sunset, stay on the mountain. B&B is not expensive, but you have to book in advance.
The next day when you go to Wuyuan Jiangwan, don't just walk through the Xiaojiang Ancestral Hall. Walking towards the back of the village, there is a grove of ancient camphor trees, which are over 800 years old. The shade is so cool that it looks like the air conditioner has been turned on. Guifeng is not far from Jiangwan. The red mountain body of Danxia landform looks like a red-hot iron block in the sun. Those with good physical strength can climb. The stairs are steep, but the visibility from the top of the mountain is worth it.
07 Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang
In the summer, Mirror Po Lake is a summer resort privately kept by Northeasterners. Enter the scenic spot at 8am, first see the waterfall of Hanging Water Building. When the water is large, the sound is like thunder, and the water mist can splash on the face.
📍 The observation deck next to the waterfall should not be forced to the front, the side angle is better, and you can take pictures of the rainbow.
🍜 Don't buy the grilled noodles at the entrance of the scenic spot, they are expensive and perfunctory. Walking towards the town after leaving the scenic spot, the grilled cold noodles with eggs and intestines at the roadside stall are only six dollars.
Take a boat trip to the lake in the afternoon. Don't take a big boat. It's crowded and noisy. Pack a small boat and the master will take you around to the island in the center of the lake, where the water is so clear that you can see the rocks at the bottom of the lake.
⏰ The lake is the quietest at five o'clock in the evening, the setting sun dyes the water golden, like a broken mirror.
⚠️ The fish feast of Jingbo Lake should not be eaten in the scenic area. Go to the urban area of Mudanjiang. The old shop on the riverside is made more authentic.
The urban area of Mudanjiang itself is worth walking. The statue of eight women throwing themselves into the river by the river. There are many people walking in the evening. The river breeze is cool and suitable for digestion. If you want to see the fireworks of the northeast, go to the Dongyi Road Night Market, where you can eat barbecue skewers, cold noodles, and fried iced fruit for $30 per person.
08 Tonghua|Jilin
Tonghua is not a popular tourist city, but that is why it retains the authenticity of a small northeastern town. Goguryeo Heritage and Monuments are in Ji An, an hour's drive from the city. Don’t just look at the Taiwang Monument, the stone structure of the General’s Tomb is more shocking, how people two thousand years ago built tens of tons of boulders into a pyramid shape is still a mystery.
⏰ Arrive before 9am, few tourists, sunlight slanting on the stone wall, a sense of crossing.
The sea of rapeseed flowers in Ji'an blooms at its peak in July. 📍 Driving from the city to the Yalu River, you can see the golden color along the way. There are canyons inside the flower field. Walk in and take pictures. The background is green mountains and rivers, which is wilder than the rapeseed flowers in Wuyuan.
⚠️ There are many mosquitoes in the flower field. Wear long pants and bring mosquito repellent.
🍜 Ji'an's Korean fire pot is a specialty, beef, tofu, vermicelli stewed in a copper pot, served with a bowl of white rice, Northeastern people call this "hard dish". After eating, go for a walk along the Duck Green River. On the other side is Joseon. You can see the villages and working people on the other side. The sense of distance is wonderful. If you have plenty of time, the city of Ji'an in the evening is very quiet, the river breeze is cool, suitable for walking and digestion.
None of these eight cities are “must-visit” celebrity lands, but each one is worth your two or three days to walk slowly, eat slowly, and feel. Where have you been lately? Talk in the comment section so that others can avoid the ambush.
