Nasu travel guide and discussion

Autumn is the time when forests around the world turn into fiery canvases. Here are a few places considered among the most beautiful for witnessing this spectacle. 🍁 Japan: The Art of "Momiji" Japan is a recognised leader in the culture of autumn leaf viewing, known here as "momiji" (admiring red maples). The tradition rivals spring cherry blossom viewing in popularity. · Nara: The ancient capital, where autumn colours are especially lovely in Nara Park, surrounded by spotted deer. · Nikko National Park: Cedar forests and maple avenues create a striking contrast with red leaves and wooden temples. · Nasu Highlands: Just 70 minutes from Tokyo, known not only for foliage but also for hot springs. 🏔️ Europe: Fairytale Landscapes Europe also reveals its full autumn glory, especially in mountainous and forested regions. · Bavaria, Germany: The forests of southern Germany look especially impressive against castles like Neuschwanstein. In the Bavarian Alps, you can witness dramatic autumn scenery. · Plitvice Lakes, Croatia: Waterfalls and lakes surrounded by beech and maple forests reflect fiery autumn colours, creating cinematic views. · Lake Bled, Slovenia: The alpine lake with its island and church becomes even more magical in autumn, when the trees around it turn every shade of gold. · Scottish Highlands: Rugged landscapes with heather moors and ancient forests (like Glen Affric) are covered in gold, deep red, and amber. 🍂 North America: The Classic "Leaf Peeping" In the US and Canada, there's a whole tradition of "leaf peeping" travelling to see autumn foliage. · White Mountains, New Hampshire (USA): This is the heart of New England. The rolling landscapes of national parks shimmer in every shade of red and gold. Best time to visit early October. · Blue Ridge Mountains, USA: The scenic Blue Ridge Parkway (755 km) is the most visited site in the national park system. Golden canopies of maples and poplars line the route. · Canadian Rockies: In late September, a "larch season" arrives for a few weeks. Alpine forests around Banff and Lake Louise turn golden. One of the best routes the trail over Sentinel Pass. #autumnvibes #travel2026

I expected Nasu Animal Kingdom to feel like another zoo, but a lot of the experience is surprisingly close-up. One minute you're watching red pandas and penguins, and the next you're standing near capybaras that seem completely unbothered by all the attention. Some of the animal encounters and feeding sessions bring you much closer than I was expecting, which also explains why certain areas can develop a queue. The setting makes it feel different too. Part of the park opens into wide green countryside with farm animals and mountain scenery, so you can easily spend several hours moving between completely different areas. I'd arrive earlier if the animal encounters are your priority, but otherwise this is the kind of place where wandering without much of a plan actually works rather well. #localdiscoveries #zoo #animallovers #japan #localguides

#slowtraveling Nasu (Tochigi) is not a station—it’s a plateau. From Tokyo, JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Nasushiobara (70 min, ¥5,500), then a 50-min bus to “Nasu Kogen” (¥1,200) or a ¥4,000 taxi. The slow core is the Nasu Highlands Dairy Road: 5 km of pasture between the ¥500-entry Nasu Animal Kingdom and the free roadside farms—Nasu Yuki-ai Farm (free entry, ¥400 ice cream, ¥250 milk, card ok), and the 100-year-old Nasu Dairy Cooperative shop (¥180 plain milk, cash). I went a Wednesday 10 am in June, rented nothing, walked the farm lane: cows behind electric fence, Mount Nasu (1,917 m) on the left, hydrangea rows in July. The Nasu Ropeway (¥1,600 round trip) lifts you to the Sanbonmatsu trailhead for a 90-min forest loop to the crater rim—slow, not technical, 300 m gain. Descend, do the dairy crawl backward (ropeway base → Yuki-ai → Cooperative), end with a ¥600 soft-serve that tastes like condensed milk with attitude. Cash for the small farm stalls; IC useless past Shiobara. Mistake: going August 13–15 (Obon)—the plateau jams like a city. June weekday or October weekend is the seam. Another mistake: thinking “highland” means cool—Nasu sun is strong, bring a cap. Would you travel 2.5 hrs for a ¥400 ice cream and a forest you could do in 90 minutes, or is the altitude the product?

#slowtraveling Nasu Kogen (Tochigi) is the lava plateau above Nasu-Shiobara—from Tokyo take Tohoku Shinkansen to Nasu-Shiobara (~1h10, ~5,500 yen unreserved), then JR bus to Nasu Kogen (~40 min, ~1,000 yen IC/cash), final stop near the dairy belt. The forest trail I use is the 3-km gravel loop behind the Nasu Dairy Center (free entry, 9–17, ice-cream 350 cash) cutting through larch stand to the Milk-ya meadow overlook. I went 9:00 a.m. weekday: bus from Nasu-Shiobara, off at the dairy center, ate a 350-yen soft-serve (cash) first—Nasu milk, denser than Hokkaido’s—then walked the loop clockwise. The trail is old volcanic cinder, grippy but not for loafers; larch shade in May, the meadow at the top holds a 360° on the Nasu volcanoes (Chausu-dake still snow-capped in May). Sat 20 minutes at the Milk-ya bench with a 200-yen vending milk-tea (IC). IC train+bus, cash dairy. Etiquette: the meadow is grazing margin—don’t cross the wire, the forest is bear-country lite—bell at the trailhead (yank once), don’t pick the alpine azalea (May–June only, protected). Mistake: 13:00 August weekend—bus full, the dairy center queue 20 deep, the trail a stroller track. 9:00 weekday, larch scent, is Nasu’s own pasture. Question: when a volcano plateau turns its lava into a dairy meadow, is the milk the geology or the crop?

Odagiri Garden is a vast 40,000m2 site with about 20 tree houses of different shapes. It's lush and there's a stream, so it looks great for kids! You can watch the stars while having a BBQ at night☆ The tree houses are lined up and it's a very picturesque place. You can choose your favorite tree house when you make a reservation and stay there! I was surprised that it was handmade. The owner, an old man, runs it by himself. It seems that there is no bath but a shared flush toilet. But, you should really think of it as a wooden box and prepare! There are no beds or refrigerators, so you should bring camping gear! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~🌲~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ point 💫You should prepare as if you were going camping 💫Even in May, the temperature drops in the mornings and evenings, so be sure to bring the proper gear. I think a winter sleeping bag is best. 💫Even if they say they have sleeping bags, they are mostly rented out, so you should expect that they won't be available. 💫By the way, I was a total camping novice and stayed there with only light equipment, and it was so cold I almost died. 💫You can get a discount on the bathing facilities at nearby hotels. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~🌲~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Treehouse Village Odagiri Garden 📍4597-12 Takaku-he, Nasu-machi, Nasu-gun 🚗8.8km from Nasu Kogen Smart IC ⏰Check-in 12:00~ Check-out 12:00 📞Make reservations by phone 9:00~21:00 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~🫧~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ※This information is current, so please check it out before you go! I went to Glamping Hills B&V Nasu Kogen, a glamping facility in Nasu-Shiobara! Glamping + Sauna! The sauna was amazing, allowing me to experience something out of the ordinary and relax in the middle of nature. It's a little way off the Nasu Highway, so inside the facility you can only hear the sounds of nature. It's probably only here that the sauna can be so quiet! There's a stream right in front of you in the morning, so you can listen to the sound of the water, and at night you can relax by the bonfire. The bath has a hot spring, the rooms have projectors, and there's a space for barbecuing. And there's a free bar that you can make yourself! I really recommend this facility because you can spend a fulfilling day here alone! 📍 5731-8 Kaminodai, Takakuko, Nasu-machi, Nasu-gun, Tochigi 325-0001

#japantravel #栃木観光 #那須観光 #日光観光 The end of October is the beginning of the red leaf season. The weather is cold so it is very suitable for going out. In Nasu, the evening is very cold so go early otherwise because of the cold weather, it will get dark early and you will not be able to play many places.

There were a lot of dragonflies, and it was such a peaceful ranch that they would land on your head or on your hands. You must try their soft serve ice cream! It's rich, of course, but it's not too sweet and it's not heavy after you've finished eating it, and it's very delicious. I always stop by Cheese Garden whenever I go to Tokyo Solamachi. I finally visited their main store! 😋 The most popular item is definitely the Imperial Villa Cheesecake 🧀 It's rich and incredibly delicious!! The Nasu main store, as expected of a flagship store, is spacious!
