Witnessing morning mist over mountains, chasing the sunset glow, and sleeping under a sky full of stars. Only by arriving in person can you truly feel Xinjiang’s vastness and romance. This Northern Xinjiang Grand Loop was fulfilling and unforgettable.

🌲 What Makes Gouxiong Valley Special This Valley is a hidden valley within the Tangbula National Forest Park, often referred to as the "Hundred-Mile Gallery" (百里画廊). Unlike the heavily touristed spots along the main road, this is a free, wild, and largely undeveloped area. · Authentic Nomadic Life: The valley is home to only a handful of herding families. You'll see yurts, grazing livestock, and experience the peaceful rhythm of traditional pastoral life. · Diverse Landscapes: On a single short walk, you can experience lush grasslands, dense pine forests, clear mountain streams, and meadows dotted with wildflowers — all framed by the distant snowy peaks of the Tianshan Mountains. ✨ The Magic of the Place The real beauty of Gouxiong Valley is in the exploration. The entrance to the forest is near the parked cars; walk through the woods, and soon you'll be surrounded by silence and pristine nature. The valley feels remote and peaceful. It’s the perfect place for hiking, photography, and escaping the crowds of the more popular Xinjiang tourist spots. As one visitor described it, it is "an untouched pure land," where the only sounds are the wind, the birds, and the flowing water. "Here, you can experience unique natural beauty and culture, and enjoy a peaceful time away from the noise." #underratedspots

It is often said that without visiting Ili, one cannot truly appreciate the beauty of Xinjiang. Taking twelve days to slow down and deeply explore the Ili Valley is the real way to understand the romance of this "South of the Great Wall" region. Travel through Sayram Lake, where sapphire-like waters nestle against snowy peaks, the lakeside grass is lush, wildflowers bloom everywhere, and the breeze ripples the lake’s surface. Standing by the lake, even your breath feels gentle. Check in at Guozigou, where forests, canyons, bridges, and snowy mountains frame every scene, step by step, creating a natural gallery. Ride along the Yizhao Highway, traveling above the clouds, crossing the continuous Tianshan Mountains. On one side, cliffs rise steeply; on the other, grasslands stretch wide, with wildflowers blooming all over. Within a single day, you can experience a thousand changing landscapes. Stroll through various grasslands to unlock different shades of green. Nalati’s aerial grassland features rolling clouds and grass, with scattered cattle and sheep; Kalajun’s human-shaped grassland lines are soft, vast, and lively; Tangbulak’s hundred-mile gallery is accompanied by streams and dotted with yurts, everywhere filled with the original poetic charm of the mountains and fields. Step into Kazanqi and Liuxing Street to feel the local life in Yining. The blue fairy-tale town is full of exotic atmosphere, horse-drawn carriages roam the streets, and every snapshot looks like a fairy tale scene. Visit Huocheng’s lavender sea, where purple waves roll with the wind, and the air is filled with sweet floral fragrance, creating an ultimate romantic experience. Wander through Qiaxi and Kuerdening, where forests and grasslands intertwine in layers of green, a hidden paradise deep in the mountains. This twelve-day journey takes you from lakesides to flower seas, from grasslands to deep mountains, from natural scenery to cultural streets. In Ili, time seems to slow down. Here, away from the city’s hustle and bustle, you can fully embrace the mountains, sunshine, and fresh breeze. If you yearn for freedom and romance, come to Ili and embark on a twelve-day mountain and wilderness adventure. Bringing dogs to Xinjiang to see the grasslands is the most healing moment in my tours. Watching them sprint, roll, and chase the wind in the endless green sea, you’ll feel—this trip was worth it. This time, my team member brought a little poodle, starting from Urumqi, and traveled a 7-day grassland loop. Here’s a warm and detailed guide for pet owners to save! · -- 📅 Travel Dates: June 1-7, 2026 🐶 Pet Friendliness: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (Grassland scenic spots are generally pet-friendly; some shuttle buses require pets to be in carriers) 🚗 Road Conditions: Grassland mountain roads have many curves, speed limits 40-60 km/h, cattle and sheep often cross the roads, so be patient 🏨 Dog-Friendly Accommodation: Many guesthouses along the way allow pets (confirm in advance). We stayed at “Muye Guesthouse” in Nalati Town 💰580/night, with a big yard for dogs to run · -- 🗺️ 7-Day Grassland Itinerary with Dogs Reference Day 1 Urumqi → Northern Section of Duku Highway → Qiaerma → Nalati Town The Duku Highway was fully open in early June, with snow-capped mountains, canyons, and pine forests along the way, and many parking areas. Poniu saw snow for the first time and excitedly dug around for a long time. Day 2 Nalati Sky Grassland (Self-Drive) Strongly recommend choosing a self-drive ticket for flexible stops and play. Cattle and sheep roam the grasslands in herds, keep your dog on a leash and don’t let it chase the sheep. The popular bridge was too crowded, but any random grassy slope was stunning. Poniu burrowed through the grass, covered in dandelions. Day 3 Nalati → Kalajun Human Grassland Kalajun is wilder and more vast; dogs can run freely (watch out for marmot holes in the distance). Bring plenty of water; the sun is strong on the grassland. At dusk, we watched the sunset at “Falconry Platform,” and the dog quietly lay by my feet—at that moment, life felt worthwhile. Day 4 Kalajun → Tekesi Bagua City → Qiongkushitai The mountain road to Qiongkushitai is narrow but the scenery is pristine. There’s a stream in the village where the dog played wildly in the water. The wooden cabin we stayed in allowed dogs on the bed (just inform them in advance and bring a sheet). Day 5 Qiongkushitai → Qiongkushitai You need to take a shuttle bus; small dogs in carriers are allowed. Hiked near “General’s Bridge,” with snow mountains right ahead. The dog panted heavily facing the snow, as if making a wish. Day 6 Qiongkushitai → Around Sailimu Lake Every viewing platform is a natural “dog park.” Pick a less crowded lawn and watch your dog run wildly by the endless blue lake. There’s a large platform halfway up the pine-covered mountain to let dogs off-leash; if you’re fit, climb 40 minutes to overlook Guozigou Bridge. By the swan-filled waters, Poniu curiously looked around, even more excited than the owner! Day 7 Sailimu Lake → Duku Highway → Urumqi · -- ⚠️ Leader’s Tips: Must-Know for Traveling with Dogs on Xinjiang Grasslands 1. Don’t skip deworming: The grasslands have ticks. Use internal and external deworming medicine before departure and check your dog’s ears and belly daily. 2. Sun protection + eye care: UV rays are very strong. White or light-colored dogs should wear sun-protective clothing or pet sunscreen and can wear pet goggles. 3. Bring enough water: Scenic spots are far apart. Keep a collapsible bowl and a large bottle of mineral water in the car to prevent thirst. 4. Control body temperature: Grassland temperatures can exceed 25°C at noon. Avoid intense running at midday and bring a cooling mat. 5. Clean up after your dog: The grasslands are home to herders and livestock. Always pick up poop! Otherwise, you may be fined or cause conflicts. 6. Respect herders: If your dog approaches herders’ yurts or livestock, they may get nervous. Keep your dog on a leash and apologize proactively. 7. Food supply: Most grassland restaurants allow dogs (outdoor seating or private rooms), but it’s best to bring your own dog food or sausages. There are supermarkets in towns along the way, but imported dog food is hard to find. --- 🌿 A Few Final Words Bringing dogs to Xinjiang grasslands is not an “easy” task—the journey is long and conditions are limited. But when you see them running freely in the endless green, ears flying, tail wagging like a propeller, all the hardships turn into one sentence: “Bringing them here was truly worth it.”

June in Ili: Lavender dyes the summer purple, and the 25℃ breeze is filled with the scent of flowers “Slow down! Don’t step on the seedlings!” The flower farmer uncle in Huocheng waved his straw hat and shouted. The purple lavender fields looked like spilled paint buckets, spreading along the gentle slope to the horizon. My cousin spun around in a white dress among the flowers, the hem brushing the flower spikes, soaking her in fragrance. June in Ili is like a sapphire kissed by sunlight. The water of Sayram Lake is so blue it feels crisp, the grass in Nalati is so green it seems to drip oil, and the Duku Highway has just torn open winter’s quilt—25℃ during the day, perfect for a light jacket, and at night, wrapped in a quilt listening to the wind, even dreams smell sweet. Following the herders, we entered the grasslands three times, counted bee swarms in the lavender sea, spotted light spots in the ripples of Sayram Lake, and counted clouds while bouncing on horseback. Only then did I understand why people say, “Xinjiang’s summer is half in Flaming Mountains and half in Ili’s gentleness.” The lakes here are “frozen” — Sayram Lake’s water carries the chill of snow mountains; dipping your hand in, you have to pull it out after a few seconds, yet it’s so clear you can see stones ten meters deep. The grass here “moves” — the “Human Grassland” of Kalajun undulates in the wind like someone’s back draped in green silk. The flowers here “form seas” — Huocheng’s lavender fields stretch in patches, walking into them feels like falling into a purple whirlpool, even your breath tastes sweet. If you don’t come now, after July’s bloom ends, you’ll have to wait until next year to take a photo turning around in the purple sea of flowers. 🌊 Sayram Lake: Snow mountains beneath the lake “Drive slower! You can see the entire Guozigou Bridge reflected here!” Old Chen gripped the steering wheel tightly. Our self-driving car stopped on the gravel beach of Xihai Grassland, and suddenly Sayram Lake’s water hit our eyes—so intensely blue, like the sky crushed and scattered into the lake. The distant snow mountains stood upside down in the water, and when clouds floated by, the shadows on the lakebed moved with them. My cousin took off her shoes and rushed into the shallow water, but as soon as she stepped in, she jumped up with a “hiss,” “The water’s as cold as if it had ice chips!” 3 tips to “capture the lake on your phone” · Take the “East Gate counterclockwise route”: Don’t enter from the South Gate! The first stop after entering the East Gate is “Dianjiangtai.” From the high ground, you can see the lake like a blue ribbon winding around the grassland. A couple who entered from the South Gate got stuck in the tourist bus, and by the time they reached the lake, the sun was almost setting, making their photos dull and gray. · Bring a “white scarf + sunglasses”: Spread the scarf by the lake, sit on it, and when the wind blows, the scarf blends with the lake’s blue, like stepping out of a fairy tale. Sunglasses not only block the sun but also reflect the lake in the lenses when taking side-profile photos, so everyone knows “you’re at Sayram Lake.” An aunt wore red-framed sunglasses, and the lake reflected in the lenses made people ask on social media, “Are those glasses made from the lake?” · Wait for “herders’ horses to pass by the lake”: Don’t just shoot the lake! When a brown horse lowers its head to drink, the lake’s reflection shatters into stars. When the horse flicks its tail, water droplets splash like silver dust sprinkled on the lake. We waited half an hour until a Kazakh young man came to herd the horses. He laughed, “You city folks are funny, watching horses drink water for so long.” 🌾 Huocheng Lavender: Free flower fields more photogenic than scenic spots “Head to Huanghuang Village! The private flower fields there are unmanaged!” The driver was right. The Princess Jieyou Lavender Garden was full of aunties waving scarves, but two kilometers away in Huanghuang Village, a few families’ flower fields were open, with purple flower spikes nearly knee-high. Bees perched on the flowers, their wings dusted with pollen. An elderly flower farmer sat on the field ridge picking lavender, saying, “Dried, it can be made into pillows.” My cousin tried to help but jumped up scared after picking two flowers because of the bees. The grandma laughed, showing her false teeth. 2 secrets to “fall into the purple sea” · Wear “light-colored old clothes”: Don’t wear new dresses! Lavender pollen sticks to clothes and is hard to wash off. Old white T-shirts and jeans are the most comfortable. Sitting in the flower field, the flower spikes brush your pants, tickling you into laughter. A girl wore beige wide-leg pants, and when she stood up, the pant legs were stained purple. She said, “This is Ili’s stamp on me.” · Borrow “herders’ straw hats” at dusk: When the sunset dyes the flower fields deep purple, borrow a Kazakh felt hat, tilt the brim low, and face the light for photos that look like “in the French countryside.” We borrowed a blue cloth hat from a grandma, who insisted on giving us a bunch of freshly picked lavender, saying, “It’ll smell for three days in the car.” 🐎 Kalajun Grassland: The wind on horseback is stronger than wine “Hold the reins tight! Don’t let go like in TV dramas!” Horse keeper Ali pressed my cousin’s hand on the horse’s mane. The black horse neighed, digging small holes in the grass with its hooves. After just a few steps, my cousin shouted, “Too fast!” Ali laughed and pulled the horse back, “This is walking; running is really fast!” The grassland looked like green velvet. The “Human Grassland” curves in the distance like a green quilt. Sheep slowly moved far away, like a sprinkle of white salt. 1 tip to “enjoy without falling off” · Choose a “four-year-old mare”: Don’t pick a hot-tempered stallion! Mares are gentle and steady. Even if you nervously pull the reins, they just sway slowly. A young man insisted on riding a stallion, but when it ran, he shouted “Stop!” Ali had to chase and catch the horse. His legs were shaking when he got off but said, “It was thrilling.” 🚗 6 days 5 nights self-driving itinerary (about 1500 RMB per person) · Day 1: Arrive in Yining → Rent SUV (about 300 RMB/day) → Head straight to Sayram Lake (East Gate self-driving ticket 140 RMB/car) → Stay at lakeside RV camp (about 200 RMB/night, sleep listening to waves) → Eat cold-water fish hotpot (60 RMB per person, fish freshly caught from the lake). · Day 2: Circle Sayram Lake → Photo at Guozigou Bridge → Afternoon to Huocheng (stay at Huanghuang Village homestay, about 150 RMB/night, flower fields at the doorstep) → Eat lavender honey naan (5 RMB each, sweet to the point of cloying). · Day 3: Shoot lavender in Huanghuang Village → Afternoon to Nalati (ticket + shuttle 155 RMB/person) → Stay in grassland yurt (about 180 RMB/night, bonfire at night) → Eat grilled lamb skewers (3 RMB each, mix of fat and lean). · Day 4: Nalati aerial grassland → Afternoon rush to Kalajun (horse riding 200 RMB/hour) → Stay in Kazakh yurt (including breakfast and dinner about 120 RMB/person). · Day 5: Northern section of Duku Highway (opens mid-late June) → Experience four seasons in one day (bring down jacket! It might snow on the mountain top) → Stay in Qiaorma. · Day 6: Return to Yining → Buy lavender essential oil (50 RMB/bottle, same model sold for 150 RMB in scenic spots) → Return trip. June tips to avoid pitfalls · Don’t “feed seagulls at Sayram Lake”: It’s prohibited! An uncle secretly threw bread and was fined 200 RMB by security and scolded by other tourists for “lack of manners.” · Don’t “ride horses beyond designated routes”: Deep inside Kalajun are swamps. The horse keeper said, “Last year a horse got stuck, and the person almost didn’t get out.” Don’t listen to offers to “pay extra to go further.” When leaving, the car trunk was stuffed with dried lavender and honey naan, and my cousin’s straw hat was still dusted with purple pollen. Crossing Guozigou Bridge, she suddenly said, “Next year I want to see the lavender after it’s done blooming; it must be beautiful too.” I smiled and said, “You’re enchanted by Ili,” but I was thinking the same—25℃ summer, purple wind, and the bumps on horseback, who could forget? Open Trip.com now to book an RV; Sayram Lake’s campgrounds still have “lake view spots,” and opening the curtains in the morning reveals the blue. The lavender is still waiting for the wind, the grassland still waiting for horses to tread. If you don’t come soon, when Duku Highway is clogged with traffic, wanting to smell flowers in the 25℃ breeze won’t be so carefree anymore.

On June 1, 2026, China's "top highway": the Duku Highway will open to traffic! The Yizhao Highway, which usually opens in mid to late June, will also open on the same day this year. Both scenic highways welcome visitors simultaneously. 🛣️【Duku Highway】 Starting from Dushanzi in the north to Kuqa in the south, it stretches 561 kilometers. Built over ten years by tens of thousands of soldiers, it is open only four months a year and is known as China's most beautiful and dangerous highway. The route passes through deserts, snow-capped mountains, forests, grasslands, canyons, and lakes, with dramatic changes in scenery. 🚗 Recommended route: Dushanzi → Bayingou → Qiaerma → Gongnaisi Forest Farm → Nalati → Bayinbuluke → Tielimaiti Daban → Big and Small Dragon Pools → Kuqa Tianshan Grand Canyon → Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves → Kuqa.

Summer in Xinjiang is a palette favored by the Creator—the blue of Sayram Lake can cleanse your eyes, the wooden cabins of Qiongkushitai hide Heidi's fairy tale, and the curves of Duku Highway carve out the grandeur of life. This 8-day guide will help you weave the romance of grasslands, lakes, and snow-capped mountains into your days. 🌄 8-Day Itinerary: From the Tears of the Atlantic to the End of the Grasslands Day 1: Urumqi → Sayram Lake Upon arriving at Sayram Lake, we were stunned—the lake water is like a giant sapphire, the wildflowers on the shore are dazzling yellow, and swans glide across the surface, creating ripples that look like silver trim on blue velvet. In the evening, we squatted by the lake to watch the sunset; the setting sun dyed the lake orange-pink, and the wind carried the cool scent of grass and water. 💡 Stay at a lakeside RV camp; you can capture the morning mist over the lake, like an un-dissipated fairyland. Day 2: Sayram Lake Loop → Guozigou Bridge → Kazanqi → Yining · Don't miss "Dianjiangtai" (General's Platform) when circling the lake. From this high vantage point, watch the lake water gradually change from light blue to indigo, with distant snow-capped mountains resembling giant beasts lying on the shore. · The curves of Guozigou Bridge are incredibly photogenic. From a drone's perspective, the bridge looks like a silver ribbon tied across the canyon, with lush green grasslands beneath. · The blue residences of Kazanqi are so picturesque! Carved wooden doors paired with red flowers on the walls; walking through the alleys in a white dress feels like stepping into an oil painting. Day 3: Yining → Qiongkushitai The winding mountain road led to the summit, where we suddenly encountered a sea of clouds—the pointed roofs of wooden cabins emerged from the clouds, and cattle and sheep grazed in the gaps. Walking down the curves of the "Human Body Grassland," the green slopes looked like silk wrinkled by the wind, every casual shot a Windows desktop background. 🌙 Stay in a wooden cabin B&B; at night, look up to see the Milky Way, dense like scattered diamonds. Day 4: Qiongkushitai → Kalajun Grassland → Eight Trigrams City → Tekes The small yellow flowers of Kalajun carpet the hillsides. Riding deeper into the grassland, you can see the white yurts of herders scattered across the green sea. In the evening, head to Eight Trigrams City (Tekes); from the Ferris wheel, the eight streets spread out like a spiderweb, and the setting sun gilds the sculpture in the city center. Day 5: Tekes → Qiapuqi Lake → Qiaxi Forest Park → Kuerdening Town The blue of Qiapuqi Lake has a hint of green, and the reeds on the shore sway in the wind. Sitting on the rocks by the lake, watch water birds skim the surface. Qiaxi Forest "absorbs oxygen"—spruce trees stand tall towards the sky, streams gurgle beneath the trees. When tired, sit on the wooden boardwalk and listen to the rustling leaves. Day 6: Kuerdening Scenic Area → Xinyuan The Kuerdening river valley holds surprises. A log bridge spans the stream, and on the opposite grassland, cattle and sheep graze with their heads down, like scattered pearls. Climb to the observation deck to see snow-capped mountains touching the clouds, and forests lining both sides of the valley, like a three-dimensional painting. Day 7: Xinyuan → Nalati Grassland → Nalati Town Nalati's "Sky Grassland" lives up to its name. Standing on the slope, watch cloud shadows drift across the grassland, and Kazakh children gallop on horseback, their laughter crisper than the wind. Walk the "River Valley Forest" trail; the stream water reaches your ankles, making you shiver from the cold, yet you can't bear to move your feet. Day 8: Tangbula → Yining → High-speed train → Urumqi Tangbula's Fairy Lake is hidden deep in the forest, a 40-minute hike away—the water is so clear you can count the pebbles at the bottom, and the purple, yellow, and pink wildflowers on the shore cluster together. Sit by the lake and daydream for a while; even time slows down. 📸 Must-Shoot List: Make your friends on social media green with envy · Sayram Lake: Wear a light-colored long dress and stand by the lake. Have a friend shoot from a low angle, framing the lake, wildflowers, and snow-capped mountains, making it look like you're standing in a painting. · Qiongkushitai: Arrive at the mountaintop half an hour before sunrise to capture the moment the sea of clouds rolls over the wooden cabins. Use Live Photo mode to preserve the flowing clouds. · Kalajun Grassland: Find a slope with small yellow flowers, run and capture the moment, with your skirt and flowers flying together, maximizing the dynamic feel. · Qiaxi Forest Park: Squat by the stream and photograph the reflection of the spruce trees in the water. Stand to one side of the camera, showing only half your face, creating an incredible atmosphere. 💡 Practical Tips: Enjoy your trip comfortably and avoid pitfalls · What to Wear: The temperature difference between morning and evening can be 20℃ (36°F)! Bring a light down jacket, sun protection clothing, and short sleeves. Mosquitoes are abundant on the grasslands, so long pants are essential. · Sun Protection: The UV rays are strong enough to make your skin peel! Bring sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen (SPF50+); otherwise, you'll return home three shades darker. · Transportation: Many roads along the way are winding mountain roads, so bring motion sickness medication if needed. Journeys are long, so pack plenty of snacks and a power bank. Cell signal can be intermittent. · Hidden Perk: You must try the yogurt from a herder's home! Sprinkle some sugar on it; it's so sour it makes your eyes squint, yet so fragrant it makes you stomp your feet. Absolutely delicious with nang bread. Upon leaving, your suitcase will be filled with dried wildflowers, and your camera with the wind of the grasslands, the blue of the lakes, and the white of the snow-capped mountains. What's so good about summer in Xinjiang? It's good because it makes you realize—some sights are truly worth crossing mountains and valleys to encounter; and some time should be "wasted" amidst nature to truly make the most of it.

Ili Panoramic In-Depth 12-Day Grand Loop Tour Finally, the long-awaited Ili has been captured in my eyes and heart. People often say that the most beautiful summer on earth is half hidden in Xinjiang and half stays in Ili. Only after coming here do you realize this is no exaggeration. Walking by Sayram Lake’s blue waters, as clear as gems shattered by the sky, the wind blowing across the lake even carries away your worries; wandering through the Nalati Grassland, where endless green stretches as far as the eye can see, cattle and sheep scattered across the hills, and clouds hanging so low you feel you can reach out and touch them; passing by Huocheng’s purple flower sea, the evening breeze carries the fresh scent of grass and trees, every frame is a romance that needs no filter. Crossing mountains and valleys, the road winds toward the snowy peaks, with grasslands, forests, streams, and yurts interwoven everywhere. Here, there is no city hustle and bustle, only the sound of the wind, the fragrance of grass, and the low calls of cattle and sheep, making time slow down. It turns out there really is such a place in the world, where the mountains and rivers are vast, the wind is gentle, and everything in sight is healing.
