Why Lecce Needs to Be on Your Summer Hit List This Year 🇮🇹☀️
If you haven’t heard about Lecce yet, you’re totally missing out! This dreamy city in southern Italy is serving major vibes this summer, and here’s why you NEED to add it to your travel plans asap:
First things first—the architecture in Lecce is next-level. Nicknamed the “Florence of the South,” Lecce is an Insta paradise with its iconic Baroque buildings glowing gold under the sun. Stroll through the Piazza del Duomo and make sure you snap pics at the Basilica di Santa Croce (Piazza Basilica di Santa Croce, open 8am-12:30pm & 4:30pm-7:30pm). Trust me, your feed will thank you!
But it’s not just about the looks—this city knows how to party. Summer means open-air concerts, lively piazzas, and the Salento coast just 20 minutes away if you’re craving those crystal-clear beaches. Fancy a dip? The beaches around Torre dell'Orso are straight-up magical. 🌊
Foodies, get hyped! Grab local treats like pasticciotto (hellooo, custard-filled pastry) and orecchiette with tomato and ricotta. Don’t skip a night at Trattoria Le Zie (Via Costadura, 19, Lecce, open 12:30pm-2:45pm & 8pm-10:30pm). The food is sooo good!
For history buffs, Lecce’s Roman amphitheater is a must-see (Piazza Sant'Oronzo, open 9am-7pm). Just imagine yourself in ancient times, but with way cuter outfits.
Getting around is a breeze since most sights are walking distance from each other. Pro tip: book your stay through trip.com for the best deals on charming hotels in Lecce’s old town.
Ready to upgrade your summer plans? Lecce isn’t just a city—it’s a whole vibe. Add it to your bucket list and thank me later!

Uncovering the Soul of Salento: My Favorite Hidden Local Discoveries
I decided to skip the main crowded tourist strips in Salento and instead rented a vintage scooter to chase the quiet magic hidden along southern Puglia's rugged coastlines. My absolute favorite discovery was stumbling upon the breathtaking natural limestone arches and crystal turquoise inlets scattered between Torre Sant'Andrea and Castro Marina.
Standing above these glowing sea caves with the salty breeze on my face felt like uncovering a secret side of Italy that time forgot. If you are planning to visit, my top suggestion is to wake up at sunrise, grab a warm pasticciotto pastry filled with lemon custard from a family bakery, and head straight to these rocky coastal spots before anyone else arrives so you can have the shimmering water all to yourself.
I spent my afternoons wandering inland through tiny, sun-bleached stone villages surrounded by ancient olive groves that stretch as far as the eye can see. I found that the best moments happen when you stop planning and just let yourself get lost down narrow cobblestone alleys.
In a tiny town named Tricase, I was invited into a small, family-run bakery where an elderly local named Maria showed me how they make handmade orecchiette pasta using methods passed down for generations.
My big insider tip for dining here is to look for unpretentious masserie (historic countryside farmhouses) off the beaten path, where you can sit under rustic wooden pergolas and taste real homemade olive oil, fresh burrata, and sun-ripened tomatoes that taste like pure sunshine.
I ended my journey by following the coastline down to the dramatic rocky cliffs where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet near Santa Maria di Leuca. Sitting on the warm limestone edge as the golden hour painted the whitewashed coastal towns in warm pastel hues, I realized that Salento isn't just a place you see, it's a feeling of slow, authentic living that stays with you long after you leave.
If you want to truly experience this magic, skip the rigid schedules, rent a car or scooter to explore at your own pace, and always ask the locals where they swim on a hot afternoon, because their secret coves are always ten times better than any guidebook recommendation.

Breaking Summer

Arriving to Santa Maria Di Leuca is not an easy task, especially from Greece. After a direct flight with Volotea from Athens to Bari, the nearest big airport, it’s still very far away. A 40 minute bus ride to the train station and from there a 2-hour train journey and 1.30 hour bus are needed, but it was more than worthy of the journey.
The breathtaking views of the pristine blue water, the shades of purple, red and orange are just as incredible in real life too!!!
