Sanping Temple's survival was no accident. Its founder, Zen Master Yizhong (later revered as the Sanping Patriarch), chose this secluded location for the temple, nestled between three peaks, with a "spiritual snake" behind it and a "divine tortoise" in front, hence the name "Sanping" (meaning "three-level"). The Sanping Patriarch was deeply revered by the people and received official support for his compassionate work, teaching agricultural techniques, and practicing medicine. Emperor Xuanzong of Tang bestowed upon him the title "Master Guangji," and after his death, the "Sanping Patriarch" cult was established, which continues to this day, contributing to Sanping Temple's gradual development into an important Buddhist center in southern Fujian and overseas. February 9, 2025 Sanping Temple in Pinghe County, Zhangzhou / Sanping Scenic Area, Sanping Village, Wenfeng Town, is a famous thousand-year-old temple in Southern Fujian and a temple with no resident monks. This temple is not only an important Buddhist cultural site in Southern Fujian and the entire country, but it is also a temple directly led and managed by the local people's government. During holidays, a large number of believers come to worship, and it is a very popular destination for pilgrims. This is my fourth time coming to Sanping Temple in Pinghe County for a pilgrimage. Our group drove from Xiamen. On the way, the driver chose the smoother Zhangwu Expressway, which was a wise decision. We finally arrived shortly after 11:00 AM, starting another wonderful pilgrimage journey. The same walk through the mountain gate, the same pilgrimage and incense offering outside the halls, the same walking through the crowds, following the throngs of people to worship at the Heavenly King Hall, Mahavira Hall, Ancestral Hall, Pagoda Hall, and others—yet every visit has its unique meaning and feeling. Being in this sacred and revered atmosphere always allows one's soul to be purified and uplifted in an indescribable way... People say that Sanping Temple is a temple that answers every prayer. This sustenance of hope and faith is awe-inspiring and fascinating. According to available information, Pinghe Sanping Temple was first built in the fifth year of the Huichang era of the Tang Dynasty (845 AD) and has a 1,180-year history. The late Tang Dynasty high monk Yang Yizhong (i.e., Chan Master Yizhong) enshrined in the temple is revered as the "Sanping Patriarch," a patriarch who was deified. Emperor Xuanzong of Tang once bestowed the title "Master Guangji." His faith and culture are widely worshipped and praised by people, and are famous far and wide. The above is our devout pilgrimage record. Below, according to the information, we present its core highlights and recommended tour routes: Core Highlights The "Three Wonders of Sanping" unique landscape Geological wonder: "Snake descending into water" and "Turtle ascending from water" complement each other. The temple is backed by a mountain range shaped like a spirit snake descending the mountain (Snake Mountain), and a thousand meters in front, there is a mountain shaped like a divine turtle ascending the mountain (Turtle Mountain). They face each other from north to south, forming a natural feng shui pattern of "turtle and snake on a pilgrimage." Architectural wonder: Unique "Three and a Half Halls" layout. The entire ancient temple is built along the mountain, with the mountain gate, Mahavira Hall, Ancestral Hall, and Pagoda Hall forming a "Three and a Half Halls" structure that is low in the front and high in the back, creating a staggered and well-proportioned layout rather than a traditional symmetrical temple form. Ecological wonder: The sacred snakes in the temple do not harm people. Snakes often appear around the temple and near the Pagoda Hall. Legend has it that they are "snake attendants" that have lived in harmony with humans for thousands of years without ever harming anyone, and they are regarded as symbols of the patriarch's protection. Rich natural and cultural relics Tiger-Running Spring: Located on the back mountain, the spring water is clear and sweet. Legend has it that it was the place where the patriarch drew the spring. Drinking it can relieve summer heat and fatigue, making it a must-visit spot for tourists. Mao's Cave: One of the eight ancient scenic spots of Sanping. There are stone pillars with carved mantras in the cave, which is said to be the place where the patriarch subdued demons, adding a mysterious color to the site. Red Army Meeting Memorial Hall: Commemorating the meeting of the Red Third Regiment and the Red Ninth Regiment here in 1935, it bears witness to revolutionary history and is an important base for red education. Recommended Tour Routes Core Pilgrimage Route (approx. 2–3 hours) Entrance Plaza: Pay respects to the white marble statue of the Sanping Patriarch and feel the solemn atmosphere. Mountain Gate and Mahavira Hall: Walk through the mountain gate, admire the plaque inscribed by Zhao Puchu, and visit the Mahavira Hall and the stone tablets on both sides. Ancestral Hall (Master Guangji Hall): The core worship area. Pay respects to the seated statue of the patriarch carved from Qing Dynasty camphor wood. This is where the incense is most popular, and it is a place to calm your mind and pray for blessings. Pagoda Hall: The highest point of the temple, enshrining the seated statue of the patriarch. The top has a unique "canopy" structure, and it offers a wide view. Nature Exploration Route (approx. 1–2 hours) Tiger-Running Spring: Go up the mountain from behind the Pagoda Hall to find the Tiger-Running Spring, taste the natural spring water, and feel the coolness of the forest. Mao's Cave: Visit the ancient cave ruins and learn about the related legends. Longrui Waterfall: If you have the energy, you can go to Longrui Waterfall, located about 500 meters southeast of the temple, to see the spectacular sight with a drop of nearly 40 meters. Transportation Tips: It takes about 30 minutes to drive from Pinghe County. If departing from Fuzhou, it is recommended to take the high-speed train to Zhangzhou/Zhangzhou South Station, then transfer to a long-distance bus to Pinghe County, and then take a local bus or taxi to Sanping Temple Scenic Area in Wenfeng Town.
