Tartu Cathedral was formerly a Catholic church. Today, it is now ruins after it was damaged in a war in 1525. While the structure of the cathedral remains firm and solid (and hence safe to walk through the ruins), there is visible damage to the pillars and arches of this brick gothic building. In recent times, a small part of the cathedral has been renovated to house the museum of the University of Tartu. Tartu Cathedral is free to visit. I travelled to Estonia for a couple of days and took the chance to visit Tartu, which is the capital of southern Estonia. It was a fruitful day with loads of interesting finds. Tartu's Town Hall Square is surrounded by classical buildings and laid with cobblestones paths. There is a prominent sculpture and fountain named Kissing Students, where newly weds would visit for luck. Directly across the Square is a bright yellow National Geographic window erected in the Town Hall Square which symbolises Tartu as one of the places in Southern Estonia worth visiting. #createwithtrip #culturewalk #estonia

Just a 2-hour ferry ride from Helsinki, Estonia has always been an easy escape, but this time, I decided to go beyond Tallinn and venture into Tartu—Estonia’s university city, home to the Aha Science Centre. What started as a simple trip turned into a blend of medieval charm, modern creativity, and hands-on discovery. 🏰 Tallinn: A Fairytale Old Town with a Modern Edge Arriving in Tallinn, I was immediately reminded why this city never gets old (pun intended). The medieval Old Town, with its cobbled streets, pastel houses, and towering spires, felt like stepping into a storybook. I wandered through the Town Hall Square, climbed to Toompea Hill for the best panoramic views, and even stopped for a coffee at Maiasmokk, Estonia’s oldest café. But Tallinn isn’t just its historic beauty. Across the city, I found cool, artsy spots like Telliskivi Creative City, where old factory buildings have been transformed into hip cafés, street art, and design stores. Tartu Town Hall Square is a trapezoidal central square located in the heart of Tartu, surrounded by classical buildings. The current Town Hall is the third building built on this spot. In the 18th century, the square was the city's most important market, called "Der Groß Markt" or "Big Market". Since 1998, the square has also become a prominent landmark, with a fountain of kissing students. Every day, the bells ring out from the Town Hall tower. The 18 bells were cast at a bell foundry in Karlsruhe, Germany, and 16 were cast to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the bells played at the Royal Eisbout Belfry in the Netherlands.
