[2025 Lima Attraction] Travel Guide for Basílica and Convent of San Francisco, Lima (Updated Oct)

It was my second time to Lima, Peru 🇵🇪 Just to share my favorite places 🙌 We explored Plaza Mayor (Main Square). We started with a walk around Lima's historic center, exploring the colonial architecture and iconic landmarks like the Government Palace, Cathedral of Lima, and Archbishop's Palace. 📍Plaza Mayor, Lima 15001, Peru We also visited Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI).Discovered Peru's rich cultural heritage through art from pre-Columbian to modern times which is very interesting. 📍Paseo Colón 125, Parque de la Exposición, Lima 💰~20 PEN (around $5.50 USD) We also visited Basílica y Convento de San Francisco. We explored the church and convent which is famous for its catacombs and beautiful baroque architecture. 📍Jirón Lampa, Cercado de Lima 15001, Peru 💰 ~15 PEN (around $4 USD) We also visited Parque Kennedy and Miraflores Central Park. We enjoyed a morning stroll in this lively area filled with local artisans, cats, and a vibrant atmosphere. 📍Av. Diagonal, Miraflores 15074, Lima We also explored Huaca Pucllana. We enjoyed the ancient pre-Inca pyramid in the heart of Miraflores, which offered a unique view of Lima's ancient past. 📍Calle General Borgoño cuadra 8, Lima 15074, Peru 💰 ~15 PEN (around $4 USD) We also enjoyed our lunch at La Mar Cebichería. We ordered "Ceviche Mixto" (mixed seafood ceviche) and "Choritos a la Chalaca" (mussels with salsa). All the food was really good and we enjoyed it a lot. 💰 ~80 PEN (around $22 USD) per person 📍Av. Mariscal La Mar 770, Miraflores 15074, Lima We also visited Parque del Amor (Park of Love). We strolled around the beautiful park overlooking the ocean, known for its colorful mosaic walls and a sculpture called "El Beso" (The Kiss). 📍Malecón Cisneros, Miraflores 15074, Lima We also walked around Larcomar Shopping Center. We also enjoyed shopping and dining with a view of the Pacific Ocean 🌊 which is perfect for sunset 🌇 📍 Malecón de la Reserva 610, Miraflores 15074, Lima We also walked around Barranco District and explored Lima's bohemian district, known for its street art, colonial architecture, and lively atmosphere. 📍 Barranco District, Lima Last but not least, I would also suggest you to try Canta Rana. We ordered Leche de (marinated fish juice with seafood) and "Arroz con Mariscos" (seafood rice). Visit the San Francisco Church and Monastery in Lima, Peru, a stunning blend of Baroque and Andalusian architectural styles. This magnificent structure took over a century to complete, with cedar wood (Sedar Wood) used for its wooden elements. The most unique feature of this site is its underground catacombs, which span three levels. The first level alone, open to visitors, contains the remains of 25,000 individuals. During the 17th to 19th centuries, locals believed that being buried in the church brought them closer to God. To secure a burial spot, they would donate money, goods, or labor. Due to the humid conditions in the catacombs, bodies would decompose into skeletons within 1-2 months. The church would then collect the bones and prepare the space for new burials. The deepest circular catacomb, measuring 8-10 meters, is particularly eerie as it is filled with stacked bones. Remarkably, the unique construction and materials of the catacombs have allowed them to withstand multiple earthquakes, making them one of the safest places in Lima during seismic events, according to tour guides. Admission is 20 Sol, and visitors must join a guided tour. Photography is prohibited in most areas of the church and monastery, but the catacombs are an exception. However, visitors are advised to quickly put away their cameras when encountering other tour groups.
