Mother Teresa Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa in Pristina is a Roman Catholic cathedral under construction in Pristina, Kosovo. In 2007, the Kosovo government approved plans for the building. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Theresa of Calcutta, an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary.
Construction began in 2007. The unfinished cathedral was dedicated on September 5, 2010, the anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death in 1997, as part of events marking the centenary of her birth. Seven years later, on September 5, 2017, 20 years after Mother Teresa’s death, the cathedral was officially consecrated. The construction of the cathedral has sparked some controversy in Muslim circles, as it is considered oversized given the small number of Catholics in the area. After the completion of the cathedral, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Prizren-Pristina moved from Prizren to Pristina. The Cathedral is one of the tallest buildings in Pristina.
In Kosovo, some of the largest Christmas Masses are held in cathedrals, where local Muslims join their Catholic compatriots in solidarity to celebrate the holiday as part of the congregation.
