"The correct reading is "Konparuyu". The name Konparu comes from the fact that in the Edo period, there was a mansion of a Konparu-style Noh actor in this area.
The site of the Konparu residence
During the Edo period, the Konparu, Kanze, Hosho, and Kongo families were given land and stipends as Noh performers under the direct control of the shogunate, and they were bestowed the Konparu residence in 1627. The Konparu family has the longest tradition of the four and has flourished since the Muromachi period. In 1607, they performed Noh in Edo together with the Kanze Daiyu. The Konparu residence is marked as "Konparu Shichiro" on the Kan'ei Edo Shozu, and is shown to have occupied the entire area of present-day Ginza 8-chome 6, 7, and 8. The residence was later moved to Zenkokujidani in Kojimachi (3-4 Kojimachi, Chiyoda Ward), but the name Konparu remained as the name of the geisha residences in the area.
