[Famous Architecture of Onomichi] (Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Former Province Name: Bingo)

Onomichi has prospered as a place of faith and a port since ancient times. The literature nurtured during its long history and the nostalgic atmosphere of its streets have made it a popular tourist destination. In terms of tourism in particular, the opening of the Shimanami Kaido in 1999 was the updraft that led to the current boom. As a key route connecting Onomichi with Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture, the bridges are equipped with bicycle paths and sidewalks, attracting many tourists, especially cyclists, from all over the world. The impact spread to the city of Onomichi, not only strengthening its character as a tourist destination but also creating fresh architecture in the streets. ① ONOMICHI U2 (photos 2-6) Warm yet somewhat desolate houses are often seen in areas where shipbuilding and trade are thriving. The area around Onomichi Port is no exception, but what particularly catches the eye is the sight of many people being drawn into the rusty doors of a huge "warehouse" with cheers. It may seem a strange combination, but the bold design of the "U2" letters on the door makes it clear that this is no ordinary building. The concept of U2 is "a small town within a town." Onomichi is also known as a "miniature city," and the playful phrase "small town" within it piques our interest even more. Inside the building, there is a grill that serves ingredients from the Seto Inland Sea, a select shop that carries products focusing on the climate and culture of the area, and even a hotel! The way "food, clothing, and shelter" are all provided is truly a "small town." In particular, the hotel entitled "HOTEL CYCLE", as its name suggests, is proud of the services it offers to cyclists crossing the Shimanami Kaido. Not only can you check in while pulling your bike, but there is also a maintenance space at the front desk and cycle hangers on the interior walls of each room. The building that is now being reborn as U2 was originally called "Prefectural Uwaya No. 2 Warehouse", from which the name U2 comes. It is a shipping warehouse built in 1943 during the war, and has a vast site area of 2,000 m2. During the renovation, the steel frame and wood used in the warehouse were left as they were as an icon of Onomichi's history, with a straight line running down the center and stores arranged around it. This design was inspired by the real "Onomichi Hondori Shopping Street", and here too the concept of a small town is embodied. At the entrance, the art by Kohei Nawa has a captivating presence, and beyond the "street" is the gentle waves of the Onomichi Channel. In a facility that symbolizes the climate and bustle of Onomichi, the exquisite contrast between manmade and natural elements fully stirs up rich thoughts about Onomichi's past and future. ②LOG (photos 1, 7-10) "LOG" = "Lantern Onomichi Garden" A space that lights up Onomichi like a lantern. LOG is located halfway up the slope to Senkoji Temple, with a concept that is full of creativity but fits in well with the scenery of the street. With a hotel, gallery, and cafe, it is a complex facility with a rich design that can also be described as a "little town within a town." The design, which has a sharp structure as its backbone, but is decorated with unique matte colors and textures, leaves an unforgettable impression once you are inside it, and is truly "unique" when compared to the nostalgic scenery around it. This building was designed by "STUDIO MUMBAI", based in India's second largest city, Mumbai. The architectural group is led by world-renowned architect Bijoy Jain, and the design of LOG was their first project outside of India. The design subject was an apartment building that was about 60 years old. It seems that considerable effort was put into blending multi-functional facilities that attract people from outside, such as a hotel and cafe, into a building built as a residence. The trajectory of their thinking is exhibited in the gallery inside the building, and you can enjoy the true value of the color direction that was devised after careful research into its compatibility with Onomichi's natural light and painstaking effort. The excellent design is also felt outdoors, and in particular, the chair standing with its back to the rectangular window carved out of the entrance has a presence that determines the tone of the space itself. In order to achieve harmony with the natural environment, which seems to be the ultimate in "natural x high sense," I felt that it embodied the "way of showcasing the region" that is common along the Shimanami Kaido. Onomichi U2 & Hotel Cycle

Cycling trip along the Shimanami Kaido 🚴 After cycling, we recommend the Hotel Cycle, located close to Onomichi Station. Many bikers from overseas have come here. There are bicycle hangers on the walls of the rooms, so you can stay with your beloved bikes ♡ The unit bath is a little small, but it is spacious and comfortable. The breakfast is very delicious! The juices at the drink bar are also incredibly delicious. After breakfast, take a walk on the deck behind U2. It feels great to be right in front of the sea. The shops inside Onomichi U2 were also sophisticated and very stylish. You can also choose souvenirs here ♡ There are showers and restrooms around U2, making it the perfect place for a cycling trip.
