Winter in Ulleungdo: Discovering the Mystique and New Charms Amidst Snowy Landscapes!
This January, I embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Ulleungdo, a destination I will never forget. Traveling by cruise from Pohang, the trip took about seven hours, departing at midnight and arriving at Ulleungdo around 7 AM. The return trip was scheduled for 1 PM, making it convenient to combine transportation and accommodation. Although the four-person cruise cabin felt a bit pricey, the experience of sailing across the winter sea was meaningful in itself.
🚙 Getting Around Ulleungdo: A Car is Essential!
Traveling around Ulleungdo is much easier with a vehicle. The island's roads are steep and winding, and even taxis are mostly SUVs to accommodate the terrain. While winter snow can make travel more challenging, some main roads are equipped with heating systems to mitigate these difficulties. The effort to ensure accessibility even in winter was impressive.
🏞️ Snowy Landscapes: Samseonam and Nari Basin
Winter in Ulleungdo offers a unique beauty distinct from its lush green seasons.
* Samseonam: Located in the northern part of Ulleungdo, Samseonam consists of three massive rocks and is considered the top of Ulleungdo's three major marine scenic spots. Legend has it that three celestial maidens descended from heaven and were so captivated by Ulleungdo's beauty that they lost track of time, angering the Jade Emperor and turning into rocks. Covered in snow, Samseonam resembled a mystical ink painting, showcasing the grandeur and charm of winter in Ulleungdo.
* Nari Basin: The only flatland in Ulleungdo, Nari Basin shone even brighter amidst the snowy scenery. The snow-covered basin surrounded by mountains created a breathtaking black-and-white ink painting-like view. It was a serene and peaceful moment to fully appreciate the majesty of nature.
🗼 Symbols and Attractions of Ulleungdo
Ulleungdo is home to Korea's most expensive resort and boasts unique natural landscapes and various attractions.
* Ulleungdo Mascot 'Ulli': The adorable mascot 'Ulli' could be spotted throughout the island, adding a friendly touch to its image.
* Songgotbong: Named for its sharp, needle-like peak, Songgotbong is a symbolic rock representing Ulleungdo's distinctive terrain. Its grandeur is truly awe-inspiring.
