Suzhou's Yangcheng Lake is a lake famous for its Shanghai crabs. In October 2022, I went to eat Shanghai crabs on Lotus Island, where Shanghai crab farms are lined up. Despite its name, it is a peninsula, so you can go directly by car, but I heard that there is a tourist boat, so I headed there by boat! The Yangcheng Lake Tourism Distribution Center (pic2) at the boat dock was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma! Who would have thought I would encounter Kengo Kuma's work in such a place. I bought a boat ticket in this building and boarded the boat when the time came. After gazing at the quiet Yangcheng Lake for a while, I arrived at the island. I was impressed by the unexpected flower fields on the island lol. In addition to farming Shanghai crabs, vegetables are also grown, and I enjoyed the scenery of rural China! Taking a stroll along Yangcheng Lake was truly delightful. On a scorching weekend, we headed straight to Yangcheng Lake and chose the Fairmont Hotel. Enjoying the lake views and watching the sunset made for a lovely experience overall. Holidays are indeed peak times for family travel. There was a crowd during check-in, but the process was quick. The rooms were spacious, with ample room in both the bathroom and balcony. However, the decor felt a bit dated, and there weren’t many smart amenities—though this depends on personal preference! The hotel is right next to Yangcheng Lake, adjacent to Bacheng Wetland Park. A morning or evening walk along the lake is highly recommended for a pleasant experience. The hotel offers a variety of dining options, including buffets and à la carte menus. For dinner, we chose Yi Feng Ge Chinese Restaurant, where the service was attentive and the ambiance pleasant. Personally, I found the Suzhou-style dishes outstanding, especially the Aozhao noodles, while the Cantonese cuisine was just average. The breakfast spread was decent—not extensive, but everything tasted great. Overall, it’s a great choice for family trips.
