Mee Sapam, Grandma Chia's, a legend of deliciousness
Another famous restaurant in Phuket is Mee Sapam Khun Yai Chia, which has been open for almost 70 years since 1952. Currently, the third generation is Grandma Chia, a Thai-Chinese living in Sapam Village in Koh Kaew Subdistrict, Phuket Province. The family runs a grocery store and has a side job of making stir-fried noodles. Because of its deliciousness, it was passed on by word of mouth and since the shop had no name, they called it “Come and eat stir-fried noodles at Sapam”, which eventually became the current Mee Sapam on Thepkasattri Road.
The shop’s signature menu, if you go there and don’t order it, you have to order this… “Mee Sapam” or Hokkien stir-fried noodles. It uses round yellow noodles that are larger than regular noodles to stir-fry. Normal Hokkien stir-fried noodles use pork stir-fried with noodles, but Mee Sapam was created by Grandma Chia who modified seafood to replace pork. It is stir-fried in a thick Chinese-style sauce and is served with Chinese kale and soft-boiled eggs. Those who like spicy food need to add more seasoning, but the original tastes smooth and delicious without any seasoning. Mee Sapam is the first dish that made the restaurant famous and widely known.
The next dish is “Phuket Fish Ball” or Hokkien Chinese call it “Hu Uan” made from Japanese banana fish or known as “yellow striped fish” found most in the Andaman Sea in Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket provinces. Mee Sapam fish balls are round and larger than normal fish balls, chewy and soft and not fishy due to the nature of this type of fish. You can eat it in the boiled fish ball with dipping sauce menu, sprinkled with fried garlic and Chinese celery, served with sweet and sour seafood sauce. It is a popular menu that the restaurant produces itself or you can eat it by itself.
Another snack is “O Tao” or sometimes pronounced “Ko Tao”. Ko means shellfish and Tao means to put together. This snack is a dish that uses shellfish seasoned with local shellfish, easy to find. The cooking method is similar to fried shellfish but has a softer texture. The main ingredients are shellfish and taro, fried with flour, eggs, crushed dried chili and fried garlic, minced and combined into a single substance. Sprinkle with fried shallots, chopped spring onions, ground pepper, and serve with raw bean sprouts as a side dish.
In terms of taste, I must say that it is very delicious. Guaranteed by the Michelin award for 3 consecutive years, I recommend that you do not miss coming to eat at this restaurant because it is located on the way out of town or on the way to the airport. The taste is good, there are many menus, and the price is not expensive. Grandma Chia's restaurant is located on Thepkasattri Road, Koh Kaew Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phuket Province. The shop has recently been renovated and the interior is beautifully decorated, clean, and classy. It opens every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition to selling food, there are also souvenirs and gifts to take home. All of them are delicious in Phuket.
