For those traveling to Portugal, I recommend a day trip at least once..🫶🏽 🚊How to get to Braga from Porto Use the Siga card (for CP trains only), issue or recharge the card at the ticket machine at São Bento Station! (When taking the train, the station staff will scan the Siga card and confirm the ticket while you are on the way) Braga can be reached in about 1 hour and 15 minutes by taking the CP train from Porto São Bento Station! (Train intervals are about 20 minutes) 📍Places to visit in Braga 1. Congregados Basilica / 16th-century cathedral located right in front of Park Avenida Central 2. Bom Jesus do Monte / There is a funicular, but be sure to walk up and see the sanctuaries located on the stairs! 3. Letreiro de Braga / Where the Braga sign is 4. Chafariz da Praça da República / Take a break at the large fountain in front of the square 5. Tasquinha Dom Ferreira / A great place to eat bacalhau and duck rice! Casa na Caniçada is located in a densely wooded area next to the Caniçada reservoir, in Vieira do Minho. The volumetry of the existing building was the starting point for the definition of the new volume consisting of three floors and where a traditional single-family housing program is distributed. The most intimate program is located on the highest floor, while the social program is spread over the remaining two. On the lower floor, the house “opens up” to the site, as an invitation to enjoy the surrounding nature. But it is on the middle floor that the house takes on greater expression through two large openings in opposite facades - one ensures the entrance to the house and the other “frames” the landscape facing the reservoir. Together, they ensure a greater sense of continuity between the exterior and the interior and the visual permeability between the arrival path - through the densely wooded hillside — and the Caniçada reservoir. #hellohalloween Exploring Braga and Guimarães in a single day was an incredible journey through Portugal’s soul. Braga impressed me with its elegant churches, lively streets, and the majestic Bom Jesus do Monte offering sweeping city views. Just a short drive away, Guimarães, often called the birthplace of Portugal, captivated me with its medieval charm, cobbled alleys, and historic castle. Both towns beautifully preserve their heritage while radiating a youthful, modern energy. From sacred serenity to old-world allure, this day trip offered a perfect blend of culture, history, and authentic Portuguese spirit.

The city’s old-world atmosphere is captivating, with elegant churches, cobbled streets, and lively squares filled with locals and visitors alike. The iconic Bom Jesus do Monte, with its grand staircase and sweeping views, was truly breathtaking. Braga also surprised me with its youthful energy, cafés buzzing with conversation, street musicians, and boutique shops lining the lanes. It’s a city where the past and present coexist gracefully, making every stroll a discovery and every moment feel timeless.

#September2025 This four-star Mercure Hotel has an incredible location! It's right next to Braga's old town, about an eight-minute walk away, making it incredibly convenient for sightseeing. Also, there's a Pingo Doce supermarket nearby, perfect for grabbing snacks, drinks, or simple breakfast items. There are also plenty of shops and restaurants nearby, so you never have to worry about running out of food! Rooms and Facilities: Comfortable and Thoughtful The rooms were new and clean, and the beds were incredibly comfortable. Even better, the hotel staff were incredibly friendly and made everyone feel comfortable. The hotel's design is minimalist, but the highlight is definitely the rooftop pool and gym on the 8th floor! After a workout or hike, you can go for a swim and relax—it's a real treat. Plus, it has its own parking lot, a real plus in downtown Braga! Dining: The à la carte menu was excellent, but the breakfast was average. If you have the chance to dine at the hotel's à la carte restaurant, I highly recommend it! Their food is truly delicious. However, the breakfast selection is quite limited. While the taste is acceptable, those hoping for a full meal may be disappointed! Minor drawback: The noise level is tolerable. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel! However, there are two minor areas for improvement: The soundproofing is not very good, and the noise from the street outside is easily heard. Those who are sensitive to noise may want to consider this option. The rooftop pool could use a few more lounge chairs; it was a bit difficult to get a spot.

Retro Hydraulic Cable Car: Buy a ticket and take the retro hydraulic cable car up the mountain to enjoy the scenery from different perspectives. It is easy and convenient.

#September2025 Palace Raio: A Blue Masterpiece of Baroque and Rococo Architecture Palace Raio, built in the 18th century, blends Baroque and Rococo styles, making it a must-see historical landmark in the heart of Braga. Architectural Highlights: ✓ Ornate Facade: The palace's facade is clad in typical Portuguese blue and white tiles, creating a striking and vibrant color. ✓ Exquisite Decoration: The exterior features exquisite wrought iron balconies and railings, adorned with bonfires and amphorae, and carved granite, creating an extravagant experience. ✓ Interior Highlight: The interior staircase is also worth a closer look. History and Current Use: The palace was originally commissioned by João Duarte de Faria between 1774 and 1775. It was later sold to Miguel José Raio, 1st Viscount of São Lázaro, which is how the palace got its name. After several changes of ownership, it was finally taken over by the Misericórdia de Braga. Today, the Palacio de Lario is a beautiful museum where visitors can delve into the history of the Brotherhood and the Order of Mercy, particularly their role in assisting the poorest of the poor.

If you're visiting Porto, consider setting aside a day to visit Braga, a neighboring city. The train ride from São Bento Station is an hour long, costing 7.5 euros round trip. Once in Braga, I recommend taking a taxi directly to Bom Jesus Hill, saving you the effort of climbing over 500 stairs to the church.
