Red Square – The Beating Heart of Moscow
No trip to Moscow is complete without standing in the historic embrace of Red Square. Framed by iconic landmarks like St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum, and the GUM department store, this vast plaza is a living canvas of Russia’s past and present.
Walking across the cobblestones, I felt the weight of centuries beneath my feet. Red Square has witnessed coronations, military parades, revolutions, and celebrations. Its very stones seem to whisper stories of Tsars, Soviet leaders, and modern-day Russia.
The energy here is magnetic. Tourists and locals mingle, photographers frame shots of the colorful domes, and street performers add life to the scene. At night, the square glows with soft lights, giving it a majestic, almost surreal atmosphere.
Whether you’re marveling at the architectural splendor of St. Basil’s or shopping beneath the sparkling glass roof of GUM, Red Square is where Moscow truly comes alive. It’s not just a square—it’s the soul of the city, and a must-visit for any traveler seeking to understand Russia’s rich tapestry.

Moscow: The world-class beauty of the red walls

During the Iron Curtain era of the Soviet Union, whenever outsiders saw images of Moscow's "Red Square", they would always see murderous missiles, tanks and other weapons capable of destroying human civilization, as well as the red walls of the Kremlin in the background. It was easy for people to think that the name "Red Square" came from blood, communism or the red wall. In fact, the name of "Red Square" has nothing to do with the above. The Russian name of "Red Square", Красная, meant "beautiful" in ancient times, but later this Russian word gradually evolved into the meaning of "red", and the "beautiful square" also became "dyed red".
