St. Olaf's Cathedral was built in the 13th century. It is a Gothic-style church. The church was originally 159 meters high. It was once the tallest building in the world (1549-1625), but it was destroyed by war. The church that tourists see today was rebuilt later. It is about 124 meters high. It is the taller building in the old town of Tallinn and one of the landmarks of Tallinn. The light in the church is very dim, and the decoration is relatively simple. You can climb up the tower of the church with your hands and feet, and you can see a good view from it. Before the Danish conquest of Tallinn in 1219, St. Olaf's Cathedral was the center of the Scandinavian community of Old Tallinn. There is a legend that the man who built the church, named Olaf, fell to his death from the top of the tower, and it is said that snakes and toads crawled out of his mouth when his body hit the ground. In the nearby chapel of Our Lady there are frescoes depicting this event.
