Changting: A Place Steeped in Cultural and Historical Atmosphere After visiting Changting County in Fujian, you will surely learn about two well-known contemporary figures in China. One is Rewi Alley, a New Zealander who lived in China for 60 years — I once collected his poetry. The other is Qu Qiubai, an early leader of the Chinese Communist Party — I have read his work "Superfluous Words.". “There are two most beautiful small towns in China — one is Fenghuang in Hunan, the other is Changting in Fujian.” These were Rewi Alley’s final words, and this praise is widely known in mainland China as “Alley’s Tribute.” Dingwuling is the largest natural village in Dinghuang Village, Gucheng Town, Changting County. It preserves the original ecology of a mountain village and has a history of around 800 years. One of its most unique features is that no mosquitoes have survived there for nearly a thousand years. Locals use a special local shale known as “Dingwuling shale” to build their homes. The village is filled with yellow clay walls, dark gray tiles, wooden houses, and old stone steps. The rough and heavy stone gates of the village are particularly distinctive. In 1938, Rewi Alley, entrusted by Soong Ching-ling, launched the Industrial Cooperative Movement in China, commonly referred to as "Gonghe." In April 1939, he arrived in Changting with several technicians and established the Southeast Changting Office of the movement, also serving as its first director. His goal was to support the war of resistance against Japan through industry. He once lived in Dingwuling, and his former residence still stands today. Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jennifer Mary Shipley also visited Dingwuling to pay tribute to Rewi Alley by following in his footsteps. The Qu Qiubai Martyrs Memorial Hall is located at the site of his execution — at the foot of Luohan Ridge on the western side of Changting County. It occupies a large area and began preparation in 2005. The exhibition hall consists of seven sections: “Seeking the Way in Youth,” “Spreading the Truth,” “Leadership Career,” “Literary Master,” “Years in the Soviet Zone,” “Facing Death Calmly,” and “Mourning from All Nations.” The museum showcases Qu Qiubai's life through images and texts, recreated scenes, multimedia effects, and videos, achieving remarkable educational results. The ancient city wall of Changting, built during the Tang Dynasty, remains well preserved to this day.
