Warm Welcome and Ideal Stay at Charming B&B
The proprietor of the B&B greeted us warmly upon our arrival, despite it being quite late in the afternoon. The UK weather was delightful, letting us sleep peacefully with open windows. Next to the property is a deer park, easily accessible to walkers. Breakfast was cooked on demand and served in the lounge/dining area. Each room features a distinct lounge/dining space, a kitchenette, sizable bedroom, and large bathroom. The bathroom is too spacious to be termed an ensuite. A communal laundry was also available for guests.

A Perfectly Haunted Quiet
No lights, no noise, no crowds — just Midhope Castle, the wind, and the endless horizon. That’s what Halloween felt like here. The grass moved like waves, the stone glistened with dew, and the silence stretched forever. There’s no need for special effects; the power lies in simplicity. The castle stands as both ruin and relic — dignified, melancholy, and full of unseen presence. As I left, the fog rolled back in, and for a moment, it looked like the castle was sinking into another world. Maybe it always has been. #HelloHalloween 🌫️

The Breath of the Past
What struck me most about Midhope Castle wasn’t fear — it was sadness. The building feels like it’s waiting for someone. During my October visit, rain had soaked the stones, and the scent of earth hung heavy. The broken windows seemed like eyes watching the fields. When I placed my hand against the wall, it was cold but alive — pulsing faintly with the heartbeat of history. Halloween here isn’t about monsters; it’s about memory. The past never really leaves.

The Road to Lallybroch
The approach to Midhope Castle might be one of the most hauntingly beautiful roads in Scotland. Lined with old trees, it feels like walking through a storybook — or a memory. On Halloween evening, the path was shrouded in fog, the branches arching like cathedral ceilings. The castle appeared suddenly, pale and silent against the gray sky. I stood for a long time just listening to the wind. It’s not a place for crowds — it’s a place for stillness, for ghosts of thought.

The Outlander’s Shadow
As an Outlander fan, visiting Midhope in October was like stepping into another century. But standing there in the dim afternoon light, I realized how haunting the site truly is. The wind carried leaves through the archway like spirits swirling in dance. The stone gleamed damp, the air was still, and time felt fragile. It’s romantic and eerie all at once — less of a tourist stop, more of a pilgrimage. If you visit, go quietly, let the place breathe, and listen. The castle speaks in whispers.

The Forgotten Hall
Although you can’t enter Midhope Castle, you can peer through the gaps in the stone and imagine the halls that once echoed with voices. On my Halloween visit, the air was damp and cool, and the light faded fast. I swore I heard faint knocking — probably a loose shutter, but still… it sent shivers down my spine. The idea that this place once thrived with life makes its emptiness all the more ghostly. You don’t see apparitions here — you feel absence itself, and it’s powerful.

Haunted by Beauty
Some places haunt you without ghosts, and Midhope Castle is one of them. The first time I saw it, the trees were bare, the grass wet, and the sky heavy with mist. The silence was almost physical. It felt like standing in a memory that didn’t belong to me. The building itself, though crumbling, has such dignity — like it knows its past and guards it closely. For Halloween, it’s the ideal destination for quiet reflection rather than fright. Beauty can be eerie too. #HelloHalloween

A Castle of Silence
Midhope Castle sits alone, tucked away among fields and forest. When I visited just before dusk, fog rolled low over the ground, swallowing the road behind me. The building itself is locked, but that doesn’t matter — the atmosphere is pure magic. Crows flew overhead, and the setting sun turned the walls amber, then gray. It’s the kind of place that makes you whisper without realizing. You don’t need ghost tours here. The solitude is the haunting.

The Burryman - Scotland’s weirdest (and most wonderful) tradition! ✨
Okay… I thought I’d seen it all while travelling, but nothing prepared me for The Burryman in South Queensferry! Every year on the second Friday in August, a local man gets completely covered head to toe in sticky burrs and flowers, then walks through town being handed drams of whiskey through a straw from the pubs! 🥃
No one really knows why it started… Some say it’s to bring luck, others call it an old pagan ritual, but it’s honestly one of the quirkiest and most charming traditions you’ll ever see! The whole town gets involved, the atmosphere is buzzing, and the poor guy somehow powers through hours of walking (and whiskey!) 😅
If you’re ever near Edinburgh in August, make a day trip to South Queensferry to catch it. Trains run there regularly, and it’s a short walk down from the station. Trust me you’ll be talking about The Burryman long after your hangover’s gone! And the place is stunning! 🍻🥂
