Tongren Ancient City is located in the central area of Tongren City. It is surrounded by water on the east, south and west sides, and only by mountains on the north. The terrain is dangerous and easy to defend but difficult to attack. It covers a total area of 37,000 square meters, and the total area of ancient residential buildings is 26,000 square meters. It is the original historical district reflecting the style of the ancient city in Tongren City and a unique ethnic cultural resource. As a well-preserved ancient city, Tongren Ancient City not only displays rich historical relics and traditional buildings, but also provides tourists with an ideal place to explore local culture and enjoy leisure time. It is said that the ancient city of Tongren was born from water, where two rivers converge. According to historical records, during the Yuan Dynasty, a fisherman found three bronze statues of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism at the confluence of the big and small rivers outside the ancient city of Tongren, and the ancient city of Tongren got its name from this. Recent archaeological evidence shows that about 3,000 years ago, the two sides of the Jinjiang River in Tongren were already densely populated and culturally prosperous. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, boats were already traveling Round-trip, merchants gathered, and guild halls were everywhere, enjoying the reputation of "the merchant protection warehouse in eastern Guizhou". In the second year of Jingtai in the Ming Dynasty, the earthen city was built based on the river. After successive government officials continuously piled up stones, forming a pattern of nine gates, three streets and six lanes. The ancient city of Tongren has been well preserved to this day and became a national key cultural relic protection unit in 2006. The ancient streets, ancient lanes, ancient city pools, water docks, ancient wells, ancient trees, and ancient courtyards in the city are all preserved, with blue bricks and black tiles, lined up one after another, which is a rare physical archive of urban development. Tongren Ancient City takes Zhongshan Road, which runs from north to south, as its longitudinal axis. Buildings are arranged on both sides of the road and connected by numerous east-west lanes. Watchtowers, ancestral halls, residential houses, shops, lanes, city walls, and docks are arranged in a gradual manner. There are many buildings of various types. According to surveys, most of the buildings in Tongren Ancient City have a history of two to three hundred years. Residential buildings of various ethnic groups, religious buildings, and commercial buildings are cleverly combined here. The culture of eastern Guizhou, the culture of the Central Plains, and the culture of Huizhou merchants converge and merge here, which directly reflects the history of urban development. With the opening of the "Taoyuan Tongren·Ming and Qing Dynasty Ancient City" Cultural Tourism Festival held in Tongren Ancient City, Tongren Ancient City has now taken on a new lease of life and is extremely worthwhile to watch and experience. Visitors can fully experience the local customs and cultural heritage of Tongren while walking through it.
