[Osaka] Tennoji Yasui Shrine Part 1
#SummerCampaign
Shoyasu Shrine is an ancient shrine dedicated to Hikona-no-kami (the god of the mountains), Sugawara no Michizane.
It is also known as Yasui Tenmangu Shrine.
When Sugawara no Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu in 901, he stopped here for a rest on his way to visit his aunt, Kakuju-ni, who was at Domyo-ji Temple in Kawachi.
At the time, villagers who sympathized with Michizane presented him with rice crackers and, in return, received the Sugawara family crest, a plum blossom.
This is said to have become the plum blossom trademark on "Awa-okoshi," a specialty of Osaka.
Yasui Shrine was built by villagers in 942, after Michizane's death, to enshrine his spirit.
It is also said that the name "Yasui" came from the nearby well, one of the Seven Famous Springs of Tennoji.
It's also said that the name "Ago" (ango) came from the fact that monks from Shitennoji Temple would practice their summer retreat (Natsu-Ago Geango) at this shrine.
The main shrine building was completely destroyed during the Great Osaka Air Raid of 1945, and the current building was later rebuilt.
The shrine also enshrines Kanayamahiko Shrine and Inari Daimyojin, its subsidiary shrines.
The grounds include the Kanshizume Well, one of the Seven Famous Springs of Oji, said to have been drank by Michizane, as well as a monument to Sanada Yukimura, who was killed in battle by the Tokugawa forces during the Summer Siege of Osaka.
