This route offers a great mix of: · 🇬🇧 Historic London · 🌳 English countryside (Cotswolds) · 🗼 Romantic Paris · 🏰 Loire Valley castles · 🌊 Normandy coast · ⛪ Mont Saint-Michel It fits comfortably into 14 days while keeping travel time reasonable.

If you are visiting Paris for more than 3–4 days, definitely set aside at least one day for Normandy. And I highly recommend starting your exploration of this region with Rouen—the capital of Normandy and the city where Joan of Arc was executed. 🚌 How to get there? The most convenient option is the FlixBus. We departed from the Bercy Seine bus station because we were staying near Place de la Bastille, and we could walk to the station. 🎫 I advise buying tickets on the official FlixBus website. Sometimes payments don't go through via the app. ⏱️ Travel time is about 2.5 hours. · -- 📍 Rouen Itinerary After arriving, cross the Corneille Bridge to the Right Bank of the Seine—this is exactly where the historic center is located. Start your walk along one of the city's most beautiful streets. 🏘️ Rue Malpalu Then, make your way to the magnificent Saint-Maclou Church. Be sure to peek behind it into the small courtyard of Aître Saint-Maclou—one of Rouen's most unusual and atmospheric spots. Next, head down Rue Damiette, which is filled with old half-timbered houses. The next stop is the Joan of Arc Museum. Then, you absolutely must visit Rouen Cathedral. ⛪ Free admission: 🕘 9:00 AM–12:00 PM 🕑 2:00 PM–6:00 PM After the cathedral, step out onto Cathedral Square and admire the historic buildings surrounding it. · -- 🕰️ France's Oldest Clock Continue your walk along the famous Rue du Gros-Horloge. This is exactly where you'll find the renowned astronomical clock, considered one of the oldest in France. It's one of Rouen's most beautiful streets. Running parallel is another impressive building—the Palace of Justice. After that, turn onto Rue de la Vicomté. Many old mansions have been preserved here, including a 16th-century house and the Saint-Éloi Church. · -- 🔥 Joan of Arc's Execution Site The next stop is Place du Vieux-Marché. This is exactly where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. The modern Church of Saint Joan of Arc is located on the square. Admission is free. · -- 🏡 Rouen's Most Beautiful Houses Nearby are several incredibly beautiful half-timbered houses. The most famous landmark here is MC Artisan Pâtissier. Right next to it, there are three museums: 🏺 Museum of Ceramics; 🎨 Museum of Fine Arts; ⚒️ Museum of Wrought Iron Works. Even if you don't plan to go inside, it is worth walking past them. · -- 🏰 The Joan of Arc Tower Next, head over to the Joan of Arc Tower—the only surviving part of the medieval castle. Then walk to Place de la Rougemare, where one of the city's most unique buildings is located. After that, head to Place du Général-de-Gaulle. Here you will find: 🏛️ Rouen City Hall; ⛪ Saint-Ouen Abbey Church; 🗿 A monument to Napoleon. The church is free to enter: 📅 Except Mondays 🕙 10:00 AM–12:00 PM 🕑 2:00 PM–5:00 PM Behind the church, there is a cozy park and a replica of the famous Jelling runestone. · -- 🌿 The Final Part of the Walk From here, make your way to Place Aubert. Then check out the house adorned with statues of Olympian gods. Next, the route takes you past: 📚 The National Museum of Education; ⛪ Saint-Vivien Church; ⛲ The Croix de Pierre fountain; 🏘️ The picturesque Rue Eau de Robec—one of the most photogenic streets in Rouen. Before heading back, make sure to drop by Place Saint-Marc, where a local market is held. · -- 💙 Rouen is the perfect day trip from Paris. There are far fewer tourists here than in the capital, an authentic medieval spirit has been preserved, and wandering its old streets is an absolute delight. ❤️ Save this itinerary so you don't lose it. 📌 In upcoming posts, I'll tell you about Étretat with its famous chalk cliffs and Mont-Saint-Michel—a place rightfully considered one of the most beautiful in France.

As you step through the colossal doors, the first thing that catches your eye is the interior architecture, highlighting Flamboyant Gothic and High Gothic styles. The central nave is incredibly lofty and airy. The lines of the stone pillars soar towards the rib-vaulted ceiling, appearing slender yet remarkably sturdy. This design intentionally opens up the space to draw the visitor's gaze upward, as if connecting humanity to the divine. The interior lighting works powerfully, meticulously calculated for wind and light direction since the Middle Ages. 🌤️🏛️ 💎 The Magic of "Stained Glass" Across Centuries An absolute must-mention highlight is the stained glass work here, which represents a perfect collision of different eras: 13th-century Stained Glass: In the surrounding chapels and the north aisle, you'll find the intensely rich blue glass that is the signature of the 13th century (Chartres Blue). It vividly tells biblical stories and the lives of saints with exquisite, jewel-like details. 💎📜 Post-war Modern Stained Glass: Because the cathedral suffered partial damage from WWII bombings, some windows were replaced with contemporary stained glass art. These focus on the casting of light and strikingly bold color contrasts. As sunlight streams through at different times of the day, the cathedral interior is bathed in hues of deep blue, ruby red, and golden yellow, transforming the atmosphere inside into a living art exhibition. 🌈✨ 🎨 Masterpieces and Historical Records of World-Class Artists Rouen Cathedral served as a crucial "Muse" and a major source of inspiration for Claude Monet, the renowned Impressionist artist. Monet once rented a room across from the cathedral to repeatedly paint its façade over 30 times under varying times and lighting conditions. Although the original paintings are now scattered across museums worldwide, standing inside helps you instantly understand why Monet was so captivated by the cathedral's "play of light and shadow." The light reflecting off the stone pillars and polished floors inside truly shifts in dimension constantly. 🖌️ Moreover, as you walk deeper into the ambulatory, you'll encounter invaluable ancient stone sculptures and historical tombs. Most notably, the tomb containing the heart of Richard the Lionheart, featuring a stone effigy resting on a pillow. It is a medieval masterpiece that flawlessly blends imposing majesty with graceful delicacy. 👑🛡️ The interior of Rouen Cathedral is not merely a place of prayer, but a powerful showroom of centuries-old art. The colored light filtering through the glass diffuses over the stone architecture, creating a profoundly solemn and mystical, yet indescribably romantic atmosphere. For those who love immersing themselves in architecture and art history, I can guarantee you'll easily lose track of time wandering around here for hours! 🕰️❤️

Address: Old Town, City Center, Rouen, France, Rouen Cathedral Transportation: 🚄 Take a high-speed train from Paris to Rouen in 1.5 hours, then a 10-minute walk from the station; walking is sufficient within the city, the old town’s streets and alleys are great for strolling, no need to hassle with transportation, perfect for the lazy traveler. Highlights: ✅ Rouen Cathedral itself The divine cathedral Monet painted over 30 times! Its Gothic spires pierce the sky, and the stone carvings on the exterior walls are exquisitely detailed. The light and shadow change completely at different times of day—cool and solemn in the morning, warm golden glow at dusk. Standing there, you can fully immerse yourself in why Monet was so obsessed. Every snapshot looks like an oil painting, the atmosphere is absolutely captivating. ✅ Inside the Cathedral The dome is tall and transparent, with stained glass casting mottled light and shadows, creating an incredible ambiance! Sunlight filtering through the colored windows onto the floor creates beautiful colorful spots that leave you speechless. Sitting quietly here is super healing, curing all travel fatigue. ✅ Surrounding Old Streets Right next to the cathedral are vintage alleys with stone roads and retro shops. After visiting the cathedral, take a stroll to digest. Every photo looks like a French vintage masterpiece—beyond stunning. Food Recommendations: ✔️ Rouen Duck: A local specialty! The duck meat is tender and flavorful, with rich sauce—order with confidence, you won’t be disappointed. ✔️ Normandy Apple Tart: Sweet and crispy, bursting with fruity aroma, refreshing and delicious. ✔️ Crêpes: Made fresh on the street, available sweet or savory, affordable and filling—perfect for a satisfying treat after a long walk. Tips: 1. Best time to visit is between 5–7 PM, when the light and shadow are legendary, perfectly recreating Monet’s paintings. 2. The cathedral is free to enter, but climbing to the top requires a separate ticket; go for it if you want panoramic views. 3. The old town alleys are narrow, so avoid carrying large luggage for easier walking. 4. Pickpockets are common in France, so keep your bags close and valuables on your person.

Rouen: Three Reasons Why I Wanted to Visit. Expectation vs. Reality I'd long dreamed of seeing those half-timbered houses, but it never happened. For some reason, I was sure there were plenty of them in Germany, but I never saw them in the spring. So, when we started planning a vacation in Normandy, Rouen became a must-see. Not only is it the capital of the Normandy region, but it's also the "French capital" of half-timbered houses. Just what I needed! And then other facts began to fall into place: it's the "Gothic capital" of France, and it was in Rouen, then the center of English power in the French kingdom, that Joan of Arc was tried and executed on May 30, 1431. We got to Rouen by direct train from Paris's Gare Saint-Lazare; the journey takes just over an hour. I thought you could easily spend a couple of days in Rouen, with plenty to see and enjoy. But you can also plan a short half-day itinerary covering the main points (as we did, since there was another city, Dieppe, ahead) – and it will also be enjoyable and unhurried! I sometimes feel like I like a city right away when I leave the train station. Rouen, on the other hand, is immediately very friendly, very welcoming, and makes you feel very comfortable! Joan of Arc's Tower greets visitors literally right outside the train station. Many people think that this is where she awaited her execution for two years, but no. This tower is just what remains of the fortress where she was held, and that's all. Half-timbered Houses But half-timbered houses, half-timbered houses – that's exactly what I was aiming for! There are over 2,000 half-timbered houses in Rouen, and most of them are ancient. I'll tell you briefly what half-timbered houses are. The foundations of half-timbered houses, and often the first floor as well, are made of stone. Long horizontal beams are laid on this foundation to distribute the load, and the posts and vertical beams are attached to them. The space between the beams is filled with adobe (a mixture of clay soil, straw, lime, and water, sometimes with sand or cow hair added) – but depending on the region where it was built, adobe can be replaced with sandstone, limestone rubble, and terracotta or mud bricks. We're walking along the central pedestrian street and see a window open in one of these houses upstairs, and rescuers are unfolding a ladder. Like true tourists, we stop to watch. Time passes, but they're in no hurry. It was only when I approached to inquire what was going on that the rescuers explained to me that they were practicing "pulling a grandmother from an upper floor on a stretcher," and not a single grandmother was hurt. Joan of Arc As we remember, Rouen is inextricably linked with Joan of Arc—even the local candy is called "Joan of Arc's Tears." We couldn't help but notice the square where she was burned. The square's dominant feature is the church. It's impossible to fit it all into the frame, but somehow it managed to fit. It's believed that the church was built to resemble a bonfire, but this hasn't been officially confirmed. The inside, by the way, is also interesting—something between a cathedral (due to the stained glass) and a lecture hall. Gothic It's no wonder Rouen is considered the Gothic capital of France: Notre Dame is magnificent. And not just one; there are several cathedrals here! Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the main cathedral (it was closed until lunchtime on the day of our arrival), but even just looking at it from the outside was priceless! We then went into the other two—they weren't gloomy, and, you know, somehow sublime. It's nice to be inside, even when you're absorbing all the ancient history. Overall, I really liked Rouen; it even exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a simple city with beautiful houses. But here, the houses are more than just pretty, and the city is friendly. And there's also Gothic architecture, and Joan of Arc... I'd happily return if I have the opportunity/need/possibility! I recommend it to you too!

#westerneurope #normandy #france ✨Rouen✨ Rouen is the historic heart of Normandy and one of the most fascinating cities I visited. The old town is full of half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and incredible churches. The Rouen Cathedral is a must-see, and so is the Gros-Horloge, an astronomical clock that’s stunning up close. I liked just wandering the streets, popping into small cafés, and getting the mix of history and local life. Rouen has this layered atmosphere where you keep stumbling upon history while just doing normal things. ✨Étretat✨ Étretat is all about the cliffs and the views. Hiking up from the town takes about 15 minutes, and once you’re on top, the scenery is breathtaking — white chalk cliffs dropping into turquoise water, with arches and rock formations that are famous for a reason. The trails are not difficult, but bring good shoes and be ready for wind. I found it one of the most stunning spots in Normandy and worth every step of the climb. ✨Véules-les-Roses✨ This little village is officially listed as one of the most beautiful in France, and you see why as soon as you arrive. It’s got the shortest river in the country running right through it, lined with old mills, gardens, and stone houses. Walking along the river to the sea is really charming, and the beach adds a nice touch. It’s small, but that’s part of the charm — it feels cozy and very picturesque without being overwhelming. ✨Jumièges Abbey✨ The ruins of Jumièges Abbey are some of the most atmospheric I’ve seen. Even though it’s partly collapsed, the scale of the stone walls and arches still impresses you. There’s also an exhibition in the old abbey dwelling that gives more context about its history. After walking the ruins, the surrounding village is nice for a short stroll, with the church and cemetery worth a look. It’s a peaceful stop that feels both historic and calm. ✨Lyons-la-Forêt✨ Lyons-la-Forêt is a picture-perfect village surrounded by woodland, and it honestly feels like stepping into a postcard. The half-timbered houses are beautifully kept, and the central market square is lovely with its old wooden hall. It’s a great place for a relaxed lunch or coffee in one of the small restaurants. Because it’s right in the forest, the village has a fresh, green atmosphere that makes it stand out compared to the coastal towns.

The captivating capital of Normandy, is a city where cobblestone streets lead you through centuries of art, culture, and history. Victor Hugo famously described Rouen as “the town of 100 spires”. Its skyline is crowned by the soaring spire of Rouen Cathedral — once the tallest building in the world and immortalized in Claude Monet’s ethereal series of paintings. As you wander through the half-timbered houses and bustling squares, you can almost hear the echoes of Joan of Arc’s defiance. Burned at the stake here in 1431, her presence still lingers in the city’s soul, with the modern Church of Saint Joan of Arc standing as a bold reminder of her legacy. Gustave Flaubert, the city’s most celebrated literary son, once wrote: “Rouen is the most beautiful city in France for streets, old houses, and churches.” From the Gothic splendor of the Palais de Justice to the charm of the Gros-Horloge — a Renaissance astronomical clock that has ticked for more than 600 years — Rouen seamlessly blends medieval grandeur with vibrant modern life. #historicallandmarks #france #rouen

I went to Rouen France for an exchange this year😌 Initially I really regretted why I didn't choose Paris 🤣 But now there is really no regret Instead, I think it's worth coming ❤️ I recommend you to come here for a half-day trip 😉 traffic: I recommend you to download the apps to see what buses/sncf trains can come to Rouen You can take sncf from Paris Saint-lazare station to gare de rouen Or check blablabus🥰 There is a bus that can go directly from Charles de Gaulle Airport to Rouen🥺 You can also download the bus company’s app to see the bus schedule🚌 Transportation within Rouen is mainly by bus Recommended Attractions: Basically all the attractions are concentrated in the city center (near the train station). So basically you can finish it quickly😚 1. The Cathedral of Luon Free attractions Note daily opening hours Although there is a place in the decoration inside But also see a lot of details😜 2. La Grande Horloge Very beautiful like a clock in a fairy tale⏰ Get off at square verdrel and walk down Pay attention to the sun yellow sign on the ground floor ☀️ 3. Street Lots of very small houses It's like entering a fairy tale world😚 Every street is different too~ But the point is there is something to walk to shopping😈 There is also a market weather: It rains often 🥲 looking at the blue sky and white clouds is like winning the Mark Six lottery 🤣 Remember to bring an umbrella ☔️ Safe ✅ Much safer than here in Paris basically if you are not careless you will not miss anything 🤣 However, remember not to cross the bridge far from the city center is another matter🥲 Language🤦🏻‍♀️ There are relatively few restaurants with English menus and naturally there are very few people who speak English I really can't rely on a translator for this 😭 #rouen #Rouen #FranceTravel #France #France #France #foodie

Rouen is a lovely little town in Normandy with lots of history. The execution site of the famous feminist icon, Joan of arc (or Jeanne d’Arc), Rouen is also home to stunning cathdrals and a must-see astrology clock! Lots of shopping and sightseeing to do, the town is rich in culture and history. Get a taste of amazing Norman food and the most amazing pastries I’ve ever tasted! #mytripvlog #tripblazers

Located in Rouen in northwestern France🇫🇷 An hour's less (train) drive from Paris🚈 It is also not necessarily a tourist place that Hong Kong people often hear or visit Compared to the capital Paris, there is a tranquility here😌 But there are many attractions and many tourist shopping areas! Walking along the Rouen you will see many houses with half-timber structures Like those cabins in Europe and Germany🤤 Transportation guide: Take TGV from Paris St Lazare to Rouen Rive Droite Local attractions: Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen #France #travel #overseas #rouen #rouen #france #see the earth in an instant

I’m planning a day trip to Rouen next month. After the cathedral and a stroll in the old town, I’ll have about 2–3 hours left for one museum—no more. I’m torn between the Musée des Beaux-Arts (paintings) and the Historial Jeanne d’Arc (story-driven), but I’m open to a curveball like Le Secq des Tournelles. For a first-timer, which single museum felt most worth that short window, and why?

IYKYK! Having visited so many European towns, when it comes to pure romance, France truly takes the crown🌷! It's not just a cookie-cutter influencer template, but a hundred towns, each hiding ten thousand completely different vibes. I've dug up 6 hidden gem locations this time, each with a unique charm👇 🍷 Kaysersberg: A fairytale town on the Alsace Wine Route. Colorful half-timbered houses spread along the valley, with old stone bridges and castle ruins creating an incredible atmosphere, all while the scent of grapes drifts through the air as you walk. 🏰 Semur-en-Auxois: An underrated medieval secret in Burgundy. Old city walls stand along the riverbank, so quiet you can hear the sound of time flowing by. ⛪ Rouen: The soulful old city of Normandy. The Great Clock street and Gothic churches carry a deep sense of history, with countless surprising corners hidden throughout the streets. 🌿 Argenton-sur-Creuse: A river runs through the town, with greenery wrapping around stone houses. It's a slow-paced gem perfect for daydreaming all day long. 🌀 Eguisheim: A super unique circular town with concentric streets. Not far from Colmar, the winding alleys offer a view at every turn, all gently embraced by vineyards. 🏔️ Foix: A mountain town in the south. An ancient castle on the hilltop overlooks the entire city, carrying a wild tenderness where nature and history intertwine. No need to rush around checking off tourist spots. The right way to experience French towns is: walk slowly, lie back and soak up the sun, and find a small shop to enjoy some authentic local food🍞. Let your eyes take in every beam of light and the tenderness of every brick and tile; many beautiful things don't need extra words. 📌 Tips: The drive between towns can be long, so renting a car or staying in segments is recommended. Try to avoid the midday crowds; early morning and dusk are the best times for photos.

My husband and I couldn't be more thrilled with our time on Great Rail Journeys. We just wrapped up a one-week cruise along the Seine River, beginning and ending in Paris, with stops at places like Rouen, Le Havre, and Giverny, among others. The bed was cozy, the room spotless, and the meals were absolutely delicious. The staff were incredibly attentive, the common areas felt inviting, and the price was AMAZING. Highly recommend!

This wasn't a trip about checking off sights. We flew into Paris, picked up a car, and hit the road—from sites associated with Van Gogh and Monet, through Normandy and the Atlantic coast to Mont Saint-Michel and on to Brittany. 🚗 Our route: Paris → Auvers-sur-Oise → Giverny → Rouen → Limesy → Étretat → Cancale → Aucey-la-Plaine → Mont Saint-Michel → Nantes 📍 Day 1 — Paris → Auvers-sur-Oise We flew into Paris, picked up the car, and almost immediately left the city. Our first stop was Auvers-sur-Oise, a small town closely associated with the final years of Vincent van Gogh's life. We stroll the streets, looking for places recognizable from his paintings: the church, the town hall, fields, and other familiar landscapes. It's a very unusual feeling to stand where the artist once stood and see practically the same views with our own eyes. 🌸 Day 2 — Auvers-sur-Oise → Giverny → Rouen In the morning, we head to Giverny, to Claude Monet's house and gardens. The garden, the pond with water lilies, the Japanese bridge, the flowers—everything we're used to seeing in paintings no longer seems like paintings here. 💡 I would plan to visit Giverny specifically during the garden's opening season—approximately from April 1st onward. After our walk, we head to Rouen, where we'll spend the night. 🏛️ Day 3 — Rouen We leave the car in the hostel parking lot and continue our walk. I liked that the hostel had good public transportation links and included breakfast—a very convenient option for traveling by car. We strolled around Rouen, stopped at the market, bought some meat and cheese, and explored the historic center and the Church of Joan of Arc. And in the evening, a slightly unexpected stop: a bar in a former church. I've already written about this place separately—it turned out to be a very special part of Rouen. 🌊 Day 4 — Rouen → Étretat → Limesy We headed towards the coast. But instead of staying in the touristy Étretat, we chose accommodation in the small village of Limesy. And it turned out to be an excellent decision. 🌿 Days 5–6 — Relaxing near Étretat After several busy days, we finally stopped rushing. We spend two days simply relaxing, strolling, going to dinner at small restaurants where the locals eat, and enjoying a completely different rhythm of France. Sometimes it's these stops that prove just as memorable as the main sights. 🦪 Day 7 — Limesy → Cancale → Aucey-la-Plaine We continue west. En route, we stop in Cancale, and here the gastronomic part of the trip begins. 🦪 A large portion of fresh oysters right on the shore — about €12. After Cancale, we continue on and check into a farmhouse in Aucey-la-Plaine, not far from Mont Saint-Michel. 🐄 Days 8–9 — The French Countryside and Mont Saint-Michel This is where my favorite part of the trip began. We lived practically in a real French village: right next to our hosts' house, surrounded by fields and country roads. Along the way, we passed 🐄 cows, 🐑 sheep, lambs, and 🫏 donkeys. We stopped at a local store to buy cheese and cider. And in the evening, we stopped at small local restaurants where everything was calm and leisurely: breakfast, lunch, and dinner—each at its own time. Thanks to the convenient location of the accommodation, we were able to see Mont Saint-Michel at both sunset and sunrise. And this is where you really understand why it's sometimes worth choosing a cottage somewhere in the countryside instead of a hotel in a tourist center. 🏰 Day 10 — Mont Saint-Michel → Nantes We leave this fairytale part of France and head on to Nantes. And here, the feeling of the trip changes dramatically. Different landscapes, different architecture, castles, different cuisine, and a completely different atmosphere in Brittany. 🏙️ Days 11–12 — Nantes We rent an apartment in Nantes and spend our last days in the city. After the small villages, coastline, and farm roads, Nantes feels completely different. It reminded me of Paris in some ways, but at the same time, it has a completely different feel. 💡 From personal experience: next time, in large cities, I'd rather choose a hotel—especially during the warm season, when air conditioning becomes quite important. 🚗 Finale This is where our trip ends. We return the car in Nantes, meaning we don't have to return to Paris and retrace our steps. In 12 days, we traveled through several Frances at once: 🎨 Van Gogh and Monet 🏛️ Historic cities 🌊 The Atlantic coast 🦪 Oysters and French cuisine 🧀 Cheeses and cider 🐄 Small villages and farms 🌅 Mont Saint-Michel at sunrise and sunset 🏰 Brittany and Nantes And perhaps this is what I liked most about this route – France was different every day. #TripMoments #FranceTravel #FranceRoadTrip #Normandy #Brittany #AuversSurOise #Giverny #Rouen #Etretat #Cancale #MontSaintMichel #Nantes #RoadTripFrance #TravelFrance #MyTravelStory

#summerinonecut 🇫🇷✨ Strolling through Rouen, a city straight out of a history book. Rouen is one of those cities that you fall in love with from the moment you step inside. With its old cobblestone streets, colorful half-timbered buildings, and an atmosphere that clearly retains the charm of the Middle Ages, Exploring this city hardly requires a map. Simply wandering through the narrow alleys of the old town will reveal hidden gems everywhere – from centuries-old timber-framed houses and charming little cafes to vibrant squares. Along the way, I visited the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, a magnificent Gothic cathedral and symbol of the city. Its towering spires and intricate carvings immediately explain why this place inspired the famous painter Claude Monet. Then I continued to Place du Vieux-Marché, an ancient square of historical significance as the location where Jeanne d'Arc, a French heroine, was executed in 1431. Today, the area is full of restaurants, cafes, and bustling people, yet it still retains monuments commemorating this important historical event. What I love most about Rouen is the balance between history and daily life. It's not just an open-air museum; it's a living city. People still use the old squares, cobblestone streets, and historic buildings as part of their everyday lives. Walking along the Seine River in the evening, the sunlight reflecting off the water and the city's old buildings creates an indescribably peaceful and romantic atmosphere. It's easy to understand why Rouen is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Normandy. Sometimes, cities that aren't as famous as Paris are the ones that make you want to return, and Rouen is definitely one of those.

If you have a little extra time in Rouen beyond the usual walks through the old town and the famous main cathedral, I highly recommend hopping on the F5 bus from the city center up to the Basilique Notre-Dame de Bonsecours. This beautiful hilltop church is often overlooked by travelers, yet it stands as one of the most impressive landmarks in the city. Getting there is incredibly easy—just take bus line F5 from downtown Rouen, and it’s a quick ride to the church grounds. As you approach the entrance, the first thing that grabs your attention is the magnificent 19th-century Neo-Gothic architecture, which was built to replace an original church with centuries of history. Inside, the basilica is filled with exquisite details, from the massive stained-glass windows to the way the light filters through the sanctuary. There’s a peaceful atmosphere here that truly reflects the devotion of the pilgrims who have visited for generations. But what makes a trip to Bonsecours truly special is the viewpoint right in front of the church. From the wide plaza, you’re treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of Rouen, overlooking the Seine River, the rooftops of the old town, the towering spires of the Rouen Cathedral, and the rolling Normandy landscape stretching as far as the eye can see. The area is also the final resting place of the famous French poet José-Maria de Heredia and features several monuments that echo the history of Rouen. For me, this spot is a perfect blend of history, art, architecture, and one of the most beautiful views in Normandy. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to see Rouen from a different perspective than most tourists. If you have the chance to visit Rouen, be sure to set aside half a day to take the F5 bus up this hill. You might just discover the city’s most beautiful hidden corner unexpectedly. 📍 Basilique Notre-Dame de Bonsecours, Rouen, Normandy, France 🇫🇷

Spent most of the morning just wandering the streets around Republic Square, grabbing a slow espresso and watching the city wake up. It was getting a bit warm, so I decided to pop into the National Museum on a whim. Honestly, I was mostly looking for a quiet, air-conditioned place to escape the midday heat, but it turned out to be one of those genuinely great, unexpected highlights. The space is beautiful and surprisingly peaceful—none of the frantic energy or massive crowds you get in museums back in the States or Paris. I was just drifting through the galleries and suddenly found myself standing in front of Matisse’s *By the Window* and Monet’s *Rouen Cathedral*. There’s something a little surreal about seeing Picasso and Renoir just hanging quietly in Belgrade, where you can actually stand inches away and just appreciate the brushwork in silence. I also spent some time in the Dutch and Flemish section. There’s a Van Gogh portrait of a peasant woman that has this incredibly heavy, soulful texture to it. But honestly, the Serbian historical rooms were just as fascinating—seeing how local 19th-century artists took those classic European oil techniques and made them feel distinctly Balkan. It’s a really well-curated, unpretentious museum. If you’re in Belgrade and need a break from the pavement, it’s absolutely worth a couple of hours. Heading back out now to find a spot for a cold beer.

⛪️🇫🇷 Église Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc, Rennes While exploring the city of Rennes, I had the opportunity to visit the Église Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc, a Catholic church located in the city's eastern district. Although it is not as famous as the landmarks in the historic old town, it is a place steeped in history, faith, and the legacy of one of France's most iconic figures: Jeanne d'Arc, or Joan of Arc. Construction began in 1914, designed by architect Arthur Regnault during a time of immense national devotion to Joan of Arc. After she was beatified in 1909 and officially canonized as a saint in 1920, churches and monuments were built in her honor across France. Stepping inside, the tranquility and the light filtering through the stained glass create a warm atmosphere filled with the power of faith. This site is not just a religious building but a reminder of the story of a 19-year-old girl who became a symbol of courage and sacrifice for her nation. Joan of Arc was a heroine who played a vital role in the Hundred Years' War between France and England. She led the French army to several victories before being captured by the English and tried by an ecclesiastical court in Rouen, Normandy. She was executed by burning at the stake on charges of heresy on May 30, 1431, at the Place du Vieux-Marché (marked by a cross in front of the church site) at only 19 years old. Years later, a retrial declared her innocent, and in 1920, the Catholic Church officially canonized her as a saint. Today, the spot where she was executed in Rouen features a monument and the Church of Saint Joan of Arc to commemorate her legacy. Visiting Église Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc in Rennes is therefore more than just about seeing beautiful architecture; it is an encounter with the story of the young woman who changed the course of French history and continues to be honored as a symbol of courage, faith, and hope to this day. 📍 Église Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc, Rennes, Brittany, France 🇫🇷

A huge thanks to Galina for our amazing summer trip through Normandy! Together with Galina, we visited Mont Saint-Michel, strolled through Rouen, explored Étretat, Honfleur, Deauville, and Giverny, experiencing all the most interesting and significant sights in these places. Galina is a top-notch professional, a passionate individual with extensive knowledge of French history and culture, coupled with a broad intellectual outlook. My husband, our 9-year-old child, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this trip — it was fascinating, fun, easy, and delicious! I wholeheartedly recommend this guide to anyone looking to discover one of France's most beautiful and authentic regions, immerse in its spirit, and learn its history! Wishing Galina success and many more enthusiastic, grateful travelers! ❤️

What a lovely hotel! We booked it just a day in advance. Traveling by train from Rouen to Paris, we arrived at Saint-Lazare station, only an 8-minute walk from the hotel. The Champs-Élysées is around a 20-minute walk, and there are plenty of nearby restaurants. Though we arrived 30 minutes before check-in, we were welcomed to wait in the lobby, where free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks were offered. The room’s minibar was free as well. Another fantastic perk was that the room key granted access to other hotels in the same chain, where complimentary snacks and drinks were available too. The hotel was impeccably clean, and the entire chain had a modern and inviting vibe. I’ve stayed in many city hotels recently, but this was both the cleanest and my favorite. We had a privilege room (2 adults and one child), and though the view could've been better, the room was spacious enough. The two-person room had a nice balcony as well (see picture). Breakfast was quite good too.

Looking for an unforgettable night out in Rouen? Let me put you on to one of the most underrated experiences in Normandy: the insane light show at Rouen Cathedral! 😍✨ Last week, I found myself totally mesmerized as the entire façade of Rouen Cathedral lit up with dazzling colors, super creative images, and epic music. Seriously, the vibe was magical—like the whole building was waking up just for you! Here’s a hot tip: it wasn’t crowded at all when I went! Everyone was just chilling or standing around the plaza (Place de la Cathédrale) right in front of the cathedral, so you can easily grab a spot for killer views. A little insider scoop: the show actually has two parts with only about a minute’s break in between. A bunch of people thought it was over after part one and started leaving—total chaos—but if you wait, the second half comes right back, even better than before! Don’t be that person who misses out. 😅 And one of the best parts? It’s 100% free (love that for us). The show runs every summer, and they drop a fresh new production each year. After the first showing (which is made of two parts), they repeat the whole thing right away so you get a second chance if you missed the start. Each round lasts about 30 minutes—perfect length to take it all in and snap tons of pics. Still time to catch it this season! Here’s the official schedule: ✅ August 17–30: every evening at 22:00 ✅ September 1–26: Fridays and Saturdays at 21:30 Where to go: 📍 Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, Place de la Cathédrale, 76000 Rouen, France Don’t sleep on this—seeing the cathedral come alive at night is pure magic you’ll never forget. Add this to your Rouen bucket list ASAP! 💫 #underratedspots #normandy #france #rouen

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our guide, Galina Masson, for an impeccable 5-day tour of Normandy. It was an immersive dive into the culture and gastronomy of the region, masterfully organized by a top-class professional. Over five days, we experienced all the main treasures: from Claude Monet's house in Giverny to Gothic Rouen, aristocratic Deauville, and the cliffs of Étretat. The highlight was the visit to Mont-Saint-Michel, where Galina helped us truly feel the magic of this place. The gastronomic program particularly stood out. Galina arranged a visit to a cheese dairy and Calvados tasting, as well as an excellent selection of restaurants. A true revelation was the trip to Cancale, the 'oyster capital.' There, we visited an oyster farm where, during low tide, we could see the endless rows of plantations. Right on the shore, at the famous market, we tried the freshest oysters of different calibers while enjoying views of the bay and the distant Mont-Saint-Michel. Another memorable moment was lunch at the fish market in Trouville. This experience is unique: you choose the seafood directly from the stalls—anything from scallops to lobsters—and they prepare it for you on the spot. The market’s lively atmosphere with a glass of white wine and incredibly fresh seafood is a reason to return to Normandy. Galina Masson is a knowledgeable and warm guide who makes the journey truly vibrant and flavorful. I wholeheartedly recommend her!

Who understands, family! To save trouble, I signed up for a group tour before going to France. After returning, I just want to say: never join a group tour! Shopping stops, rushing around like a duck, staying in the suburbs—these harsh truths can save at least one person. The plan was to leave at 9 AM, but we waited until 9:30 for everyone to arrive. The Louvre visit was limited to 40 minutes. Just after seeing the Mona Lisa, we had to leave. The advertised “four-star hotel in the city center” turned out to overlook a suburban parking lot. France isn’t a place to just “check off” but to truly “stay and experience.” This guide is sincerely put together. I suggest saving it directly 📍 · -- 🇫🇷 Quick location overview France is in Western Europe. Summer (June–August) average temperatures are 20–22°C, warm and comfortable, perfect for outdoor activities. But in Provence, Southern France, the summer sun is strong, so take care to avoid heatstroke and sunburn. July to September is peak tourist season, with lavender fields in full bloom, but also the busiest and most expensive time. · -- 🍽️ Food recommendations (from breakfast to dinner) Must-have breakfast croissants 🥐 — Pierre Hermé’s croissants are flaky to the point of falling apart. For baguettes, choose Poilâne, crispy outside and soft inside, getting more flavorful the more you chew. For main meals, don’t miss duck confit 🦆, with crispy skin and tender meat, perfect with potatoes. French onion soup with melted cheese is rich and warming. If you dare to try raw, beef tartare is well-seasoned and not gamey. Baked escargot with garlic butter is intensely flavorful. For dessert, go straight for macarons — Ladurée or Pierre Hermé are top choices. For crepes, Breizh Café offers both sweet and savory options. For ice cream, Berthillon is the most famous in Paris. Crack the caramelized sugar crust on crème brûlée for a soothing treat. · -- 🏨 Accommodation guide (by budget) Budget-friendly (students/backpackers) 🎒: Hostels or budget guesthouses in Valensole town, about 350–550 CNY per night, within walking distance to lavender fields. Comfortable (most people’s first choice) ✨: Courtyard guesthouses in Avignon’s old town, boutique hotels in the stone village of Gordes, 700–1,100 CNY per night, with a Southern France countryside courtyard, waking up surrounded by lavender scent. Premium (vacation and relaxation) 🏖️: Lakeside cabins in Verdon Gorge, 1,200–1,800 CNY per night, with emerald canyon river views from the window and a night sky full of stars. 💡 Tip: During peak season from July to September, mountain guesthouses and hotels increase prices by 50%–100%, so book early! Keep bags in front on the subway, don’t put your phone in your coat pocket. Pickpockets are common in Paris. Avoid wearing large logo luxury bags; low profile is safest. Don’t spend too long on your phone near subway doors 3. Restaurant bills usually include a 15% service charge, no extra tip needed 4. Some shops close on Sundays, stock up on snacks in advance 5. Drive carefully in Southern France, mountain roads have many sharp turns; beginners should be cautious. Carry a valid Chinese driver’s license and translation 6. While the lavender is in full bloom, make your plans for France 💜

For me, this town in French Normandy has always been associated with Rouen Cathedral in Claude Monet's paintings. How many did he paint? 30? And the main thing in these paintings isn't the cathedral, but color. The moment—that's what mattered to Monet. Morning or evening, rain or fog, Monet presented the cathedral as yellow, blue, or pink. In reality, this one of the most significant Gothic buildings in the world seemed too huge, cold, and soulless to me. It's better to look at Monet's paintings than my photo. Not far from Notre Dame in Rouen is an amazing clock with a single hour hand, on which sits the figurine of a golden ram (wool was Rouen's main wealth). And who needed a minute hand back then, when it took five days to get to Paris. And there's another event in Rouen's history that it would like to forget like a bad dream: here in the market square on May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc, the inspiration for the French Resistance, was burned at the stake. Looking at the memorial cross at the site of the fire, the incomparable Inna Churikova with her piercing gaze is before your eyes. #Rouen #Normandy #France
