💧 The most delightful stop on the trip This time in Albania, what caught my eye the most wasn’t the popular cities, but the Blue Eye spring. The moment I saw the spring water with my own eyes, it really felt like stepping into a secret realm—the water is a crystal-clear blue-green, like a gem melted into the forest. Highlights: The most special thing about the Blue Eye spring is that the water color changes with the light. In the morning, it’s more transparent, and in the afternoon when the sunlight hits at an angle, it turns bluer. Unlike ordinary attractions where you just “check in and take photos,” walking slowly along the trail while listening to the sound of the spring calms you down. The vegetation around the spring is dense, the air is moist, and even in summer it doesn’t feel too hot. Photo spots: I recommend two spots: one is a low angle close to the spring’s source to capture the water’s texture and the blue center; the other is standing a bit farther on the trail, using the forest as the foreground and hiding the spring in the greenery, which makes the photo more storytelling. Try to avoid shooting at noon with harsh light, as the water surface can easily be overexposed. Morning or evening shots are better. Tips to avoid trouble: The roads around the Blue Eye spring aren’t very wide, and parking and the entrance can get crowded during peak season. It’s best to arrive early to avoid the midday crowds; don’t wear very light-colored shoes as it can get slippery near the water; and don’t just take photos of the spring itself—the nearby forest trails and mossy rocks also have a great atmosphere. If you’re tired of the usual islands and ancient cities, this stop in Albania is really worth adding to your itinerary. It’s not the kind of spot that stuns you at first glance, but it will make you realize “Europe still has such quiet and clear places.”

We had an incredible journey last month to Albania and North Macedonia, guided by Ledio from Show Me Albania. Theth is the village at the centre of the Albania Alps, it is the perfect place to base yourself for a few days to explore the area. The best thing to do in Theth is hiking, there isn’t much to do in the town, so just keep this in mind if you plan on visiting. The village area is beautiful, stunning views of the Albanian Alps and gushing rivers abound. As well as viewing the church and lock in tower in Theth village we did a couple of excellent hikes to The Blue Eye, Grunasi waterfall and Canyon of Grunas which is spectacular. How to get to Theth from Shkoder: To get to Theth from Shkoder you will need to book a minivan. This minivan only leaves once a day at 7am, so it’s important to book it. There are multiple companies, but spots are limited. You can do this at your accommodation, or you can go to the bus station in Shkoder and try your luck for a bus with availability. It’s recommended to arrive around 6.30am to catch the 7am bus.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the park as Category II. In 1992, the archaeological site joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The lagoon has been further recognized as a wetland of international importance by designation under the Ramsar Convention. There are no crowds of tourists here, just the sound of the wind, the waves, and the occasional boat horn.
