It's super easy to get to, making it the perfect day trip from Fukuoka. 🛥️ How to get there from Hakata: 1. Take the JR line from Hakata → Fukko-Daimae (~20 mins) 2. Catch a bus to Shingu Port 3. Take a ferry to Ainoshima (~20 mins) 🐱 Things to know before you go: · There are very few restaurants/convenience stores, so stock up on supplies on the mainland. · Check the ferry schedule carefully, as there are only a few trips per day. · Ferries might be canceled on rainy or windy days. · The locals ask visitors to "please refrain from feeding the cats random food" for the sake of their health. When I went, there were a lot of people lining up most of them were also heading to the cat island. 🚌 Look for the bus with a sign that says Ainoshima Tosenba (Ainoshima Ferry Terminal). Ride it to the last stop. The bus fare is 100 yen (IC cards are not accepted). ⛴️ The ferry to the island runs on a set schedule. Tickets are purchased from a vending machine. I took the 11:30 AM ferry to the island and returned at 1:50 PM. Tickets must be purchased one way at a time there are no round-trip tickets. For the return trip, you’ll need to buy your ticket at the island right before you head back. I went to "VICINO", an Italian restaurant located in Urban Mall Shingu Chuo, near IKEA in Fukuoka Prefecture, about a 5-minute walk from Shingu Chuo Station, for lunch with a friend😊 ݇- This restaurant has a wood-fired oven inside the restaurant, so you can eat authentic pizza🍕 They have a wide variety of pizza and pasta menus, so I couldn't decide which one to get, but this time I ordered "Quattro Formaggi" and "Sea Urchin and Green Laver Cream Pasta" and shared them😋 ݇- The pizza was topped with honey🍯, and the sweetness of the mozzarella cheese and the sweetness of the honey worked together, and the basil was a nice accent, making it a happy taste😳💓 I ordered 1.5 times the amount of pasta (+200 yen) and it was a creamy pasta with a chewy fettuccine noodle and a great aroma of green laver and sea urchin! I spent half a month in warm, spring-like Kyushu, a stark contrast to snowy Hokkaido. · - Day 1: Flight to Nagasaki 🏨Hotel: Near Nagasaki JR Station From Nagasaki Airport, I took a bus to the city center. It's more convenient than the JR train. That day happened to be the Nagasaki Chinatown Lantern Festival. This is a large-scale lantern festival lasting about two weeks, a major annual event in Nagasaki. Chinatown itself is a tourist spot, with Chinese-style buildings and a street lined with gourmet food. It was bustling with tourists, truly resembling a lively Chinese fair. Chinatown offers many Chinese snacks, including Nagasaki's famous Kakuni Manju (braised pork bun). · - Day 2: Nagasaki: Western and Chinese Architecture in the Snow Nagasaki experienced a rare heavy snowfall, offering a unique view of snow-covered Chinese temples and the contrast between the white snow and red walls. After petting them to my heart's content, I grabbed a bite to eat at "Western Restaurant Umi" to satisfy my cravings. There, you can enjoy a meal in a relaxing, traditional Japanese folk house while playing with the resident cats. (The first picture is a cat from this very house! I fell in love at first sight...🤍) After lunch, I decided to explore the island until it was time to catch the ferry back. With cats trailing right behind me, I strolled through narrow alleys and took in the beautiful views of the fields and the ocean. While Fukuoka City itself has plenty to see, venturing just a bit further brings you to this wonderful cat paradise. Purchase your boarding pass at the fishing port waiting area. Tickets are sold one way only, costing 480 yen per person. Suica and cash are accepted. ❕Boarding is restricted if the number of passengers per trip exceeds 150, with priority given to island residents. There are over a dozen cats around the harbor. According to the staff, they're free-roaming, and some prefer the woods. Which cat you encounter depends on your luck. I took the 11:30 AM ferry to Aishima. As soon as I got off the ferry, I spotted cats lounging around by the roadside, some blocking the way. The round trip to the stone mounds on the island's southern coast took about an hour and a half.
