And it's exactly here, in these treacherous waters, that one of the world's most famous maritime legends was born—the legend of the Flying Dutchman. 🚢👻 Why here? It's brilliantly simple. This massive bay is notorious because the winds almost always blow toward the shore. Sailors rounding the Cape of Good Hope frequently mistook the bay for the open ocean. Once they sailed in, they were trapped: fierce headwinds, shallow waters, and sudden storms made it nearly impossible to get back out. Ships either got stuck or met their doom. 😨 And so, the myth of the captain who lost his soul to the devil in a game of dice was born. He and his crew were cursed to sail these waters around the bay and the cape for eternity, never allowed to step foot on land. Romantic, eerie, and incredibly poetic, don't you think? 🃏💀 🌊 Why else should you stop in Simon's Town? Well, first off, the penguins 🐧—you can watch them in peace, away from the crowds, almost entirely on your own. Secondly, the town's atmosphere is absolutely incredible. Picture a scene straight out of a 70s movie about the American Dream: quiet streets, stunning ocean views, and pure tranquility. Only this is South Africa, and the ocean is the Atlantic. 🏨 Where to stay? I highly recommend Watercolours Studio. It’s around $100 a night, and it was pure magic. We were the only tourists there. The host was incredibly welcoming, and the staff was super friendly. Our room was situated just beneath the owners' quarters, featuring a massive private patio with unimaginable, sweeping views of the entire bay. Just take a look at the photo—it was taken right from the hotel grounds. 😍🌅 By the way, take a closer look at the trees in the photo. They all grow horizontally! That's because the winds in Simon's Town, along the coast of False Bay, always blow in the same direction. They are strong and relentless, much like the curse that keeps the Flying Dutchman trapped. 🌬️🌳 So come here for the legends, the penguins, and this unreal vibe. And then there's Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope—the legendary end of the world, where the Age of Discovery began. 🚢⚓ The significance of these places in history cannot be overstated. And you have to see them at least once in your life—because it's unforgettable. Imagine: two lonely cliffs jutting into the endless Atlantic Ocean. And beyond, only Antarctica, thousands of kilometers away. 🥶🌊 🚌 How to get there comfortably? The best option is the red Hop-on Hop-off bus. Besides the cape itself, you'll get a nice bonus—a visit to the penguins! 🐧 The entire tour costs only $30 per person. A wonderful guide is usually included, who will entertain you and tell you tons of interesting stories. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office in town or online. 🎒 What to bring? Essentials: snacks 🥪, water 💧, comfortable shoes 👟, and a raincoat/hooded jacket 🧥. This place is famous for its frequent overcast and rainy weather. The weather can change in minutes. 🏁 How's the day going? The tour departs around 9 a.m. from one of the points in Cape Town. After about 1.5-2 hours, you'll arrive at the parking lot near the cape. Then you have a choice: take the cable car or walk to Cape Point. 🚶♂️ Honestly, walking is a comfortable option. If a slight climb isn't a problem, I recommend walking. 🌏 Another Planet As you exit the bus, you're greeted by a completely different reality. Alien vegetation and landscapes seem like they're not from our planet. And if it's overcast, clouds literally envelop the cliffs, and the ocean is endless. Impressive already. But the real story is yet to come. As you gradually ascend toward the lighthouse, you'll see old colonial buildings. But the most stunning thing is the view that opens up from the lighthouse itself. 🏛️ When you see Cape Point for the first time, it will take your breath away. A lonely rock jutting into the ocean. One of the best views I've ever seen. Incidentally, the lighthouse was never used for its intended purpose—it was always shrouded in fog, so they built another one, next to which is the observation deck. 💡Fun fact: Cape Point isn't the tip of Africa, but the way it juts into the ocean makes it even more impressive than the Cape of Good Hope itself. The view is simply out of this world. 📸 🥪 Lunch with a view of eternity After the photo shoot, it's time to go down. I recommend sitting on a bench and having lunch. A snack with such a view is incredible. You'll never forget it. 🚶♂️ Walk to the Cape of Good Hope Next, you have another choice: bus or walk. If you have the energy, walk! A walk along the cliffs, with views of wild beaches named after great explorers (one, for example, is named after Bartolomeu Dias, who discovered the cape). Look at the photos – you'll understand everything. 🏞️ To see the cape itself, go to the observation deck where the guide will take you. Be very careful – looking down is really scary, and not everyone dares. But the view is impressive (captured in the first two photos). Further on, see the famous "Cape of Good Hope" sign and ostriches along the way. 🦩 🐧 Bonus: Penguins in Simon's Town On the way back, stop in Simon's Town and meet the penguins. Lifehack: you don't have to follow a guide along the bird-watching trail. You can go to Seaforth Beach (near the Institute of Oceanography). There you'll see penguins unenclosed, right at your fingertips! 🐧 Please don't touch or disturb them. Just watch—it's priceless. If you're lucky, you might even see them swimming. 🌆 A perfect end to the day You'll return to Cape Town around 6 PM. For dinner, I highly recommend the Knysna Oyster Company—possibly the best oysters in the world! 🦪🥂 If you have enough time, I highly recommend staying overnight in Simon's Town. South Africa isn't just about wildlife; the scenery where mountains meet the sea, the warm locals, and various kid-friendly experiences completely changed my perception of Africa. 🦁 Wildlife Tracking Kruger National Park was definitely my child's favorite! We rode in an open-top jeep, galloping across the savanna, searching for the Big Five. We were incredibly lucky and saw a lion family on the first day, along with elephants, giraffes, and zebras. My child was glued to the car window, not blinking, and screaming with excitement the whole time. The guide patiently explained the habits of each animal and would stop to let us observe them slowly, never rushing the itinerary. Remember to depart at 5:30 AM when animals are most active, wear long sleeves and pants to prevent mosquito bites, and bring small binoculars for a clearer view. · -- 🌊 Cape Peninsula Ocean Adventure We took a boat from Hout Bay to Seal Island, where thousands of seals basked on the rocks. The Blyde River Canyon looked like God's spilled paint palette, and from God's Window, overlooking the entire canyon, my child said it looked like a scene from a cartoon. In Hermanus, from July to November, you can go whale watching. You can even see Southern Right Whales leaping out of the water from the cliffside walking paths without needing a boat. Boulders Beach is one of the few places in the world where you can get up close and personal with African penguins right in their natural habitat. Most of the beach features elevated boardwalks, making it super easy to watch the penguins without disturbing them. You get incredible views from up here, though it does get pretty crowded. Plus, keep an eye out for the fluffy baby penguins hanging out with the adults—they're incredibly easy to spot and look exactly like little plush toys! Between the two beach entrances, there's a public path where you can check out the penguins completely for free, away from the platforms. The general admission fee is pretty affordable anyway, and a single ticket gets you into both entrances. If you head in through the right entrance, you can actually scramble through the giant boulders and end up practically right next to the penguins—no fences, no platforms! You will have to do a bit of climbing and wade through some water to get there, but trust me, it's absolutely worth it. Important rules to keep in mind: · Hands off the penguins! Touching them is strictly off-limits. You could easily scare them, and they might even peck you in return. · Keep the noise down. If you stay quiet and avoid any sudden movements, these curious little guys might just waddle right up to you—sometimes they aren't scared of humans at all! · Check before you drive. Its atmosphere is different from Sea Point and Camps Bay: Sea Point has an urban seaside feel, Camps Bay offers a vacation vibe with white sandy beaches, while Hout Bay feels more local and has a fishing harbor ambiance. Hout Bay is surrounded by several mountains: to the north is the Table Mountain National Park mountain range, to the west it connects to the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive coastal road, and to the south it leads toward the Cape Peninsula and Simon's Town. Chapman’s Peak Drive is love at first turn 💙 It's one of the most beautiful roads I’ve ever driven on. There are several kilometers of perfect winding roads, with the majestic ocean on one side and sheer cliffs on the other. You just drive... and can't believe it's real. You'll want to stop every single minute. And it’s easy to do so—there are plenty of well-equipped viewpoints along the road with parking, restrooms, and even small souvenir shops. No one rushes here; you just soak it all in. We drove this route in a rental car from Simon’s Town to Cape Town, and it was one of the most memorable parts of our entire trip. It brings a true sense of freedom, with the ocean breeze and views that no photo can do justice. It's a toll road, but the fee is nominal—about 60 rands. In South Africa, you can see penguins in two places: the well-known Boulders Beach and the lesser-known Stony Point. I'll discuss the pros and cons of each place and my opinion on what's a must-see and what can be skipped. I'll start with the less popular Stony Point (1-2 photos): It has a paid and a free section. Penguins can be found in the free section, or they can swim across to the paid section. It's a matter of luck. · significantly fewer people · you can see penguins for free · if you head from this spot toward the wineries, the road runs along the very beautiful R44 highway along the ocean · a small penguin colony (essentially the penguins are standing behind a partition, with an equal number of people standing on the other side of the partition with their phones) That's it. Beautiful views, not many penguins. If you're unlucky, you might not see any at all. We didn't go to the paid section, as many people wrote that there was nothing interesting there. My conclusion: if you're passing by, you can stop by. But it's not worth a separate trip. Boulders Beach: There are two entrances: one leads to the beach, the other to the bridges where penguins run. One ticket gets you to both. In my opinion, it's worth visiting both the bridges and the beach. At the bridges, you can watch the penguins and dasies; they'll be within arm's reach behind the fence (photos 3-4). At the end of the path are observation platforms from which you can observe the colony. There are a lot of penguins, but there are just as many people. But still, it's worth it. Another path leads to the beach (photos 5-6): When you go down, it will look like an ordinary beach with people swimming. Walk left to the end of the beach, reach the rocks, climb into a gap between the rocks, and walk deeper until you see penguins running within arm's reach. At high tide, you'll likely have to wade through the water. This is the best way to see penguins. It's less crowded here, and the penguins running past are unenclosed. You can even swim next to them.
