Mountain Pass Peak in Sichuan's Aba
If you drive from Chengdu/Dujiangyan to Siguniang Mountain, you will come across one very high mountain pass, that reaches about 4000m above sea level. 🏔️
There is a parking spot with snacks. Local sellers sell Tibetan handcraft, praying flags and you have many picture opportunities to catch the mountainous landscape. Sometimes you can even ride a horse with local Tibetans.
📍 It's on the S303 (Provincial road 303), about 20-30km before Siguniang town.
🅿️ Parking is free. First comes, first served.

Tibetan temple in Danba
Gandan Pengcuoling temple is a small temple in Danba, Ganze in the west of Sichuan. The monks were very friendly and let us explore the temple by ourselves. Next to it were some small restaurants and noodle shops to get some energy. From Danba town it's a short ride into a village, in the town are many hotels and guesthouses.
🎫 No ticket for the temple, it's for free.
📍Route recommendation: Danba can be combined with Siguniang mountain in Aba or Xinduqiao grassland in Ganze. Both places are a two to three hour ride away. Busses are available, but not very frequent, better ride a car or book a tour.

Tibetan Grassland Temple in Bamei
Bamei Town is a town under jurisdiction of Dawu County in Garze Tibetan autonomous prefecture. It's covered by grassland and around 3000 m above sea level, so it's quite high in the mountains already. The greater are is also called Xindu Bridge area. The temple is next to the street and there is basically only one road, you can't miss it. 🏞️⛰️⛩️
We saw many travellers from Lhasa and had some nice conversations.
📍From Chengdu it's around 5-6 hours. There are some busses, but it's hard to get information about the time table. Better take a car or book a tour. Also there are some white minivans that take you from town to town.

Great Viewing Plattform in Danba
Danba is a mainly ethnic Tibetan prefecture in Ganze, West-Sichuan. From Chengdu it's a 5 to 6 hours ride, the average altitude is 2000-2500m. 🏔️ 🌄
There are two main valleys, the western one is with an entrance ticket (around 25RMB), the eastern one is for free and not developed. We choose the eastern one this time. If you drive up the eastern side of the valley, you can find this view plattform with a very small Tibetan temple. You can hike a little and enjoy the view or bring some snacks. Free parking.

Amazing Tibetan art of needle and silk thread
🤷♀️ What: Exhibition of Tibetan Embroidery art
🌐: Dukezong Old Town, Shangri-la
🎟️Entrance: Free
🖼️🏷️: from about 60 yuan to lets just say a lot
Artist level: From amateur to Grandmaster
Motives: Tibetan, ☸️🕉️ Buddhist, ⬅️Western
How'd we get there?
We stumbled upon this wonderful event by accident. Luckily a kind English speaking guide gave us a complete tour of the exhibition and introduced us to the displayed artwork explaining the history and significance of the motives and illustrations. So if you want to know more, he's probably a better source of information than yours truly but I'll try.
Mostly, the works display buddhist motives( from mandalas to Guanyin, the goddess of mercy and Gautama Siddhartha himself), but you can also spot some western ones as well( Van Gogh for example). Other elements include landscapes, animals and every-day people.
What is embroidery art? 🪡🧵🖼️
The most basic description of embroidery is the art of using a needle and thread to decorate fabric. You can look at it as stitching traditional culture into light fabric. Tibetan needlework uses silk threads specifically.
This is in no way a skill one can develop overnight. It takes years, nay decades to develop and perfect the arts.
Tibetan embroidery tradition has been passed down and developed for hungered of years and the profound needlework displayed at the gallery is hard to put into words.
Amazing:
What's really amazing about this exhibition is that, not only does it present the work of some of the best artists in the field, but also helps enthusiastic amateurs gain and boost confidence by promoting their work.
💲🧵🖼️You can buy handcrafts from local craftsmen, teenagers, housewives and elderly who are just looking to put their work at display.
The precise technique of the details on more advanced work is mind blowing. So much that from a certain distance it's easy to mistakenly confuse the handcraft with a regular painting.
📍You can visit the Tibetan Embroidery Academy at the Dukezong old town l, next to the famous Defu Prayer Wheel.

Adventurous Road Trip
We spend 2.5 hours on the road to get to Qinghai Lake via Sun-moon mountain, the largest salt water lake of China. There you may feel that the air is so fresh and the sunshine is so warm it makes you feel as if you are in paradise. You can see groups of sheep, yaks, blue sky and white clouds. We dressed up in traditional Tibetan clothing and enjoyed some of the activities they had. The main scenic area we visited was the Erlangjian Scenic Area. You can enjoy the charming lake, take a boat cruise, horse riding and bike riding which is also available around the lake.

Grassland Horseriding in Garze (Sichuan)
Garze or Kandze in West Sichuan is an autonomous region with many minorities. It's part of the Tibet-Qinghai plateau and you can see grasslands and mountains. 🏔️🐎 I recommend to go there by car, because public transport is quite difficult, although it's possible. Booking a tour would be an alternative option, in case you don't have the Chinese driver license.
🏷️ Price: 30-200 RMB, depending on the length and location.
📍There are hundreds of local horse riding spots, very nice view and enough hotels and restaurants nearby you get in the Xin-Du-Qiao area.
