Green Lake Park
#hiddengems
Immerse yourself in the natural beauty and tranquility of Green Lake Park, a serene oasis nestled in the heart of Kunming, China. As a nature enthusiast and avid traveler, I recently had the pleasure of exploring this picturesque park, and it truly exceeded all expectations.
From the moment I stepped foot into Green Lake Park, I was captivated by its lush greenery, tranquil waters, and vibrant array of flora and fauna. The park's centerpiece, the expansive Green Lake, shimmered under the sun, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding mountains and sky in a breathtaking panorama.
As I strolled along the park's winding pathways, I encountered charming pavilions, scenic bridges, and quaint tea houses nestled among the trees. Locals and visitors alike gathered here to relax, socialize, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life amidst the beauty of nature.
One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to observe the park's resident black-headed gulls, who migrate to Green Lake every winter from Siberia. Watching these graceful birds soar through the air and glide across the water was a truly mesmerizing experience that left me in awe of the wonders of the natural world.
But perhaps the most magical moment of all was witnessing the park come alive at sunset. As the golden rays of the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the lake, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of peace and serenity wash over me.
As I reluctantly bid farewell to Green Lake Park, I left with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving our natural habitats. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, a leisurely stroll, or simply a moment of quiet reflection, Green Lake Park offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and inspired.

My Kunming highlights
#fallingseason
The city of spring is one of my absolute favorite places in China. It is mainly used as a hub city for transportation to other cities in Yunnan province but I do recommend spending some time there if the opportunity comes. Here are some of my recommendations:
🕊️Green lake park
Very famous for the seagulls by the lake in winter time from November to May.
🏫Former Yunnan army lecture hall
Nice building with a nice cafe inside that sells ice cream 🍦
☕️ Salvador’s coffee house
I came here first time in 2005 and it’s still here. They have excellent western food that is good for breakfast lunch and dinner as well. Very good vegetarian options.
🏯 Yuantong Temple
Built during Tang dynasty, beautiful buildings in the city center. Worth a visit if you have time.
🏨 Silver Chest Boutique Hotel
Amazing little hotel with unique Chinese style but with modern facilities. Amazing courtyard and beautiful library

A day in Kunming
Kunming is one of those places you only go to as a stopover on your way to Lijiang or Dali, but I recommend visiting a few places while you wait. The first is a calligraphy class. It's a great way to learn a bit more culture and pass an afternoon. I also suggest to get to a roof bar and enjoy a drink or two overlooking the city. It's beautiful on a Summer evening. Both of these places are near 岔街站 (chajie metro).
翠湖公园 (Cui Lake park) is another beautiful place to visit and there is a Mann Coffee cafe nearby where you can view the lake from the 2nd floor. Very peaceful! #kunming #kunmingtravel

Kunming’s BEST Skyline View!
Hotel name: Fairfield by Marriott
Location: Shi Zha metro station in Kunming city.
Kunming is a beautiful city in the south west of China. The hotel I recommend staying is Fairfield by Marriott…why? Because it’s modern, clean, in a great location, good beds, great breakfast and a stunning panoramic view of Kunming city.
Tip: Head to the hotel via taxi or take the metro to Shi Zha station. Enter the building and go to floor 23. This is the lobby. As you explore the modern lobby, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the buildings and mountains of Kunming city.

The Streets of Kunming!
Location: Many side streets in Kunming city.
Kunming is a wonderful place to visit during the summer months…why? The weather is mild and not hot AND the streets in this city are quiet, quaint and beautiful. Filled with ancient architecture and luxurious trees, it’s so relaxing to be walking.
Street tips: Qian Ju Jie (钱局街) is nearby the central part and has many trees to walk around.
Also recommend walking from Shi Zha subway stop southwards and get some local food and enjoy the life of the locals.

Two days in Kunming
A nice two days in Kunming city. Dianchi lake was great for a walk. It was a littlw cloudy but it was nice to walk around. The boat rides are 80rmb for an hour from there.
I recommend Nanping street for the evening, great for dinner and drinks. I visit a Turkish restaurant there called Aesir which was great. Lamb and beef kebabs were excellent as was the Turkish pizza.
I stoped in the Marriott Fairfield which was in a very convienient location. It had a nice breakfast with both Western and Chinese options available. Great view from the hotel.
Guandu Ancient town is also worth a visit if you have time.#dianchi #kunming
Kunming old town
Kunming is a city for foodies, there are so many delicacies that is not enough to try in several days. You take a walk in old town which is quite nice. It has with wide streets and no matter how many people are there you still can walk and enjoy. To try the delicacies, you simply ask in the restaurant or small shops which dish is famous and they will give you variety of examples which won’t let you down!

A day at karst caves and stone forest
I went on a one day tour to Jiuxiang karst caves and Shilin (the stone forest) near Kunming.
Although the tour was in Chinese and I didn't understand the explanations directly, the advantage of being part of a group were not worrying about how to get there and back to Kunming, and a lower trip cost in total. The main disadvantage other than the language was not being able to manage the time I spent in each place.
The karst caves were very nice, especially the pillars that look like melting candles, and the underground river.
The stone forest park is very big, and the time we had was limited. I recommend going first to the peak view pavilion, to appreciate the massive stone pillars from above, then explore the rest of the park.

Two days in Kunming
Kunming was a very nice and welcoming city. We spent a night there, after leaving Xishuanbanna. Local people were very friendly to foreigners and very welcoming, the weather was very warm for January. We visited the village of minorities, saw the lake there, watched the minorities show, took a train in the park, went to an amazing Muslim restaurant called “Asia’s Middle East” and had a very good time.

Stay here in Kunming!
When booking a hotel for Kunming I wanted something pretty central and close to the train station, so glad about what I found!
The Yunge Select Hotel is walking distance from the railway station and close to plenty of malls and restaurants. It's also relatively cheap!
They have plenty of rooms to choose from, including ones with a projector to watch movies. I stayed in one of the circular bed rooms, they light up can like a spaceship at night.
Absolutely worth a stay for the view alone 👌

Dian Chi Lake strolling....
A must-visit attraction whenever you visit Kunming. Accessible by car, bus or the nearby metro, and only a short distance from the city centre area.
On arrival, can immediately begin walking along shore of the lake, and you will see people feeding the many birds, listening to music, having a picnic or enjoying a simple walk. There are various places to buy food and drink along the lakeside, as well as even take a cruise on the boat around the lake. There are small boutique hotels also here. The air is fresh and the mountains and trees provide a positive contrast to the pale-blue water. A good place to visit any time of the year! #tripblazers #yunnan #kunming
Shilin (Stone forest) in Yunnan
Getting There - it's best to take a train from Kunming. It takes about 2-3 hours to explore the Stone forest, so it's best to come back to Kunming in the evening, rather than staying in a hotel in Shilin as there is literally nothing else around.
About- Stone forest is a set of karst limestone formations and it's a very large park with a changing scenery, from narrow and steep passages to fields with a majestic view of the stones. Be prepared for a lot of walking and climbing. Once you explore the narrow passages and caves at the Major Stone forest, you can get away from the crowds and enjoy the so called Minor Stone Forest and get a view of the stones and truly admore this work of nature. If you're in Kunming, Stone Forest is definitely worth the trip.

Nanqiang Night Markets
Located in the city center, Nanqiang is an awesome pedestrian street full of food stalls, pop up bars and restaurants!
We loved wandering through the brightly lit, mouthwatering streets and enjoyed a delicious meal at a cute little Japanese restaurant 😋.

Don’t be fooled by the crowded entrance
When you arrive at the park it’s likely you’ll see crowds of tourist groups gathering up. Don’t let this put you off. Once you get into the park and onto the trails you’ll find plenty of time to be alone with the stones.
They will recommend you buy a bus ticket for an extra 25 rmb to get you to and from the ticket booth to the entrance of the park
since it’s a bit of a walk.
You can drive straight from Kunming or stay in a local hotel near the stone forest for convenience. If you plan on more than one day I’d recommend staying locally.
I found this park to be incredibly beautiful and could have spend days walking here.

Stunning Sunrise
Luoxia Valley is the perfect place to see the red earth 红土 (Dongchuang Red Land) near Kunming.
Drive 3 hours from Kunming to reach this beautiful destination. A car can be arranged for about 800rmb from the city.
Stay at a guesthouse in the valley for added convenience.
There’s a large viewing platform to view the red land from and the perfect spot to watch the sunrise. If conditions are right you are in store for a spectacular show. In July on a Monday morning I was the only person on the entire platform for sunrise. If you like to enjoy nature without the crowd this this the perfect location. Don’t miss it! #summervacation #sunrise #china #naturalwonders #yunnan #kunming

Breathtaking stone forest in Kunming
Less known, but one of the most authentic and breathtaking places I have ever visited in my life.
It is the Stone Forest (Kunming Stone Forest, Shilin in Chinese), a spectacular set of limestone groups and representative of the karst landscape of southern China. Known since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as the "first wonder of the world", it is one of the most important attractions in Yunnan. You can get there by a bus available from Kunming city, since this attraction is located in a bordering county.
It was so fun to get lost in those rocky labyrinths, among which you meet the women and men of the Yi ethnic minority with their colorful clothes and musical art. Then, the waterways, the dense vegetation ...
In short, if you pass through Yunnan for Kunming and you don't make a trip here, it's like not having been there.
Unmissable.

Kunming- Xiyou cave
“The Xiyou Cave is the shooting site of “Journey to the West” TV drama, and the famous Traveler Xu Xiake of Ming Dynasty left a reputation of “the first strange cave in the world”. The West Tour Cave Scenic Area includes : West Tour Cave, Water Curtain Cave and Guanyin Cave.
📍Get there : I took a DiDi from my hotel located near Kunming railway station and it took a little over 40 minutes or so.
Attractions- The caves are a lot of fun to visit. There are professional photographers along the way. There’s a glass bridge, a big swing and a giant Buddha hand. I highly recommend doing all the activities, it’s totally worth it!
Food - There are food stalls at the entrance of the site. You can also buy some snacks on your way up the mountain.
Recommend time - 3 to 4 hours.
Have fun!

Kunming- Green Lake Park
“Green Lake Park, aka Cuihu Park, situated almost in the city center and facing Yunnan University, is one of the most beautiful parks in Kunming city. It is at the foot of Luofeng Mountain and on the west side of Wuhua Mountain. Green Lake itself occupies 15 hectares (37 acres) in the 21-hectare (52 acres) Green Lake Park and used to be a part of Dianchi Lake, but has become an independent lake now because of the water level decreasing of Dianchi.”
📍 Getting there - I believe the closest subway station is Panjiawan (line 3).
I personally rode a bike there. It is very easy to get around in Kunming!
Attractions - It’s a lovely and peaceful park. I went there around 7pm and it wasn’t really busy.
Recommended time - I stayed there for about an hour and a half. I’d recommend you bring food and drinks so you can enjoy a little picnic!

Kunming- Yunnan nationalities village
How to get there - I took a DiDi from my hotel located near Kunming railway station and it took about 30mins. From the DiDi drop off location I walked about 5 minutes.
This tourist attraction is quite nice and large.
Walk around and enjoy the different villages.
Throughout the day, there are different shows showcasing different villages. I strongly suggest you take a photo of the schedule when you enter the site. It is located in front of the gate.
I watched two of the shows and thought they were very good and interesting.
Food- There are some restaurants at the entrance.
When I visited there was quite a bit of construction going on but I still had a good time!
Enjoy your trip! 😊

Kunming- Daguan Park
📍 Getting there - I’d recommend taking a DiDi or ride a bike!
Attractions- The park is large and has a lot of beautiful gardens and an attractions park!
Food - You can buy some food on site.
This park is very beautiful! I highly recommend visiting if you’re in Kunming! ❤️
Some information about the park:
“The park consists of seven tourist areas, including Jinhuapu, Louwailou, Mindscape Garden, East Garden, Yu Manor, Lu Garden and New West Garden.
Divided by style of different ages, Daguan Park can be classified into three regions – the "historic garden" that is made up of the Jinwupu, the Louwailou, the Mindscape Garden and the East Garden and features in the style of Ming and Qing dynasties; the "south garden" that contains the Yu Manor and Lu Garden and features the confluent beauty of Chinese and western gardening popular in China between 1912 and 1949; and the "west garden".

The wonders of Yunnan- Flower Market, Kunming
My partner and I stumbled across this hidden gem by accident. We got off at the wrong subway station, and found this massive flower market.
The subway is right next to the market, so it is easily accessible.
The market sells beautiful and fresh flowers from all over the world. I even found some wild flowers from my country (RSA). They sell fresh cut garden flowers, potted flowers, potted plants, bonsai's, succulents, seeds etc etc. You can find any type of flower or plant at this market, and the prices are incredibly low. Entrance to the market is free.
I glad we had to fly out of Kunming, or I might have spent way too much on plants and flowers there😅. It's a lovely place.

The wonders of Yunnan- Stone Forest, Kunming
The Stone Forest is a bucketlist item when visiting Kunming. It is located around 80km from the city and can be reached via a 1.5 hour coach bus ride, or a 40 minute bullet train ride, followed by a local bus or taxi to the park.
The park is very big and there is so much to see. There are golf carts driving around inside the park, that can take you to the main scenic areas. It comes at a small extra fee.
Inside the park, you will be amazed by the beautiful karst rock towers, valleys, caves and lakes. The karst rock towers literaly form a stone forrest. It is spectacular. There are plenty of small mountain spots where you can view the stone forrests from above.
It's peaceful and a great place to get some fresh air, and natural beauty

I rode a bike from Daguan Park and it was very easy to navigate!
I love how Kunming is such a bikeable city!
This area is really nice for shopping.
If like me you’re not much into shopping but enjoy a nice walk, you’ll have a good time!
I ate dinner at Magnet and it was delicious. I had the Cajun chicken & bacon quesadilla and the chicken tenders.
The beer selection is also quite decent!
Enjoy 😊

Stunning view of the city when your riding the cable car! It’s defiantly a must when you travel to Kunming to get your best luck touching and asking for wishes at the Kunming dragon gate! it’s very historical site where Buddhist caves are carved and paths in this mountain. The place is kinda tiring to walk up but it’s a great experience and adding good memories. best not to wear slippers sharp rocks around.

The Stone Forest (石林) near Kunming is a remarkable geological formation.
Aeons of sedementation, erosion and volcanic eruption have left sharp, jagged pillars of stone rather like trees, which rise singly and in groves over a large plain.
Whether looking down from above or walking through cave-like passages between the rocks, marvel at the alien landscape nature's forces have left.
I highly recommend bringing a picnic lunch, as there are no places to get food in or around the park aside from some expensive and unappetizing snacks. It's worth setting aside a whole day for Shilin, as the park is large and there are many different views.
We travelled to Shilin Town by bus and stayed in a local hotel, but the park could also be visited as a day trip from Kunming, especially if you have a car.
