ARCHITECTURAL TIME CAPSULES
#malaysiatrip
With a history spanning the late 19th century, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is unquestionably one of Malaysia's most notable and beloved heritage structures as well as a significant historical landmark. The building was named after the sultan of Selangor who was in power at the time it was inaugurated in 1897 and is located in Kuala Lumpur, directly across from Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square). If you love architecture, this is one of the best place you should visit.
Getting There - It took about 6-15 minutes of driving (depending on the traffic flow) and approximately 2.7KM from KL Sentral.
Attractions - Built with red bricks, the structure features three towers that define it's architecture. Tall white arches, a grand porch, curved colonnades, two domes and a commanding 41.2 meter clock tower to complete the building's visual appeal.
Hotels - There are few hotels around the SAS building.
Food & Restaurants - Many street food and restaurants can be found nearby this area.
Shopping - Just next to this building, there's a market called Central Market where you can get many types of souvenirs.

Satisfy sweet cravings with Zhao Ji Desserts

Zhaoji desserts are a traditional Chinese dessert often associated with Cantonese cuisine. They can include a variety of sweet treats such as puddings, custards, and sweet soups made from ingredients like red beans, lotus seeds, taro, and glutinous rice. These desserts are known for their subtle sweetness and smooth, creamy textures. Some popular Zhaoji desserts include mango sago pudding, black sesame soup, and sweet almond soup.

Dining in a Post Office?
This post office turned into a retro styled Kopitiam named Kafei Dian has a long history behind it. Built in 1911, the cafe now serves meals from 7.30am to 10pm (except Tuesday, till 5.30pm).
Expect the usual local fares like nasi lemak, kaya and butter toast, dimsum, noodles and coffee while dinner includes western food such as Chicken Chop etc. It's worth noting that this establishment serves no pork or lard (Muslim friendly).
Breakfast and lunch are usually packed with locals and tourists since it is very near to tourist hot-spot like Kwai Chai Hong and Chinatown. However, the environment is pretty chilled at night with friendly staffs. Food wise, they are quite standard with wide range of variety, be it snacks or proper meal. Worth a visit if you are around the area :)

Petaling Street Chinatown
I visited Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown to walk down Petaling Street. It’s one main walking street with some side streets lined with stalls selling souvenirs and restaurants. I picked up one of those cute automatic fans that you can wear around the neck since it is so hot and humid outside, especially under the midday sun. I also grabbed lunch, steamed chicken and some cooling herbal tea.

Petaling Street a good bargain place 🛍️👕⌚
A must visit street in KL for tourists and travelers as this is the place to shop and window shopping. We can get anything here from street foods, souvenirs, bags, clothes, perfumes, copy grade A leathers, watches, fruits and many more.
In my teenage years, i used to come here to buy DVDs/VCDs with a good bargained. What a nostalgia! 🥺
This time i came with my son to reminisce and teached him some life lessons. Not much had changed at this area, they still sell the same goods like old days sans the DVDs.

The Best Beef Noodles in KL
Shin Kee Beef noodles, a must try if you're in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In my opinion the best beef noodles in the area as well.
A beef noodle stall that has been around since the 1930s and currently being run by third generation owners. A testament to the quality of the dish being made.
While they only serve beef noodles, you have a choice of various beef options. Fresh beef slices, beef balls, beef slices and beef balls or a complete mix of beef slices, beef balls, beef tripe and beef brisket. You also have a choice of 3 noodles, yellow noodles, rice vermicelli and flat rice noodles which you can have singular or a mix of noodles.
Always get the dry version of the dish as you get served with a bowl of soup on the side and you can add it into the noodles if you wish to have it as a soup option but you can't make a dry option if you order the soup version.
The noodles are perfectly cooked and the soup is light but sweet from the boiling of beef bones, mildly salty but still beefy. Add the chili sauce on the side to add some heat to the beef and you have a simple yet highly tasty dish.

Tasty coffee in Chinatown KL
Great coffee at Kaffe 16 in Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur.
Perfectly steamed milk which brought out it's natural sweetness blended with nice bright and sightly bitter espresso in their Cappuccino. This is in contrast to their dirty latte which is espresso blended with cold milk with a chocolate rimmed glass which brought a nice bitterness to the cold milkiness of the cold milk espresso.
The staff were attentive and attended to requests quickly and cleaned tables immediately once customers left which kept the cafe clean and uncluttered.

Old Cinema New Life
Rex Cinema… I still remember the 3 hours queue for Jurassic Park tickets in 1993. I’m glad that this place is being repurposed. Loved the place and the bookstore (covering in another post).
many cinemas were affected by the home video and online viewing, Rex Cinema at Petaling Street is one of the locations under Shaw Brothers that did not survive the cinema downturn.
It was repurposed into a hostel before destroyed in a fire in 2007. Finally, some great minds revived this place into a hip joint with little shops, hip coffee joints and a beautiful bookstore at the top floor.
Have a look at the photos for a peek of a new life of an old cinema.

Petaling Street Market
Petaling Street or Jalan Petaling is a bustling shopping district in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown.
Chinatown is the name given to the original commercial heart of Old Kuala Lumpur. The area surrounds the Jalan Petaling market and is one of the most popular tourist destinations for any visitor to Kuala Lumpur.
The majority of Petaling Street is pedestrianised and covered to keep the sun and rain off. It is lined on both sides with stalls selling souvenirs, bags, shoes, T shirts, pens, watches, fake DVDs, and imitation/pirated branded goods. Selling fake products is of course illegal in Malaysia but these vendors still seem to find ways to remain in business.
Getting There - By LRT to Pasar Seni or Go KL City Bus to Pasar Seni
Attractions - Shopping and eating
Hotels - Many hotels nearby to suit all budget
Food & Restaurants - Many F&B outlets and restaurants nearby to suit all budget
Shopping - Many stall selling the same product. Do practice your bargaining skills

A Dim Sum Foodie Experience Video
Looking for good affordable Dim sum that had been around for ages and want something air condition due to the weather in malaysia?
Head to Bunn Choon Restaurant located at No 8, Lorong Pangung, City Centre where you will find this very colourful building in one of the back alleys. They are open daily from 7.30am in the morning till 3.30pm in the afternoon only.
They are known for their famous bakes like egg tarts and puffs that has been passed down by generations and their Dim sum is to die for. Just look at the steaming Pork Ribs, that smooth porridge and that shiny glutinous rice.
They also do have an afternoon menu where they serve their soya sauce chicken and duck and alsp charsiew which sadly we didn't had a chance to try.

Visiting Chinatown KL - A touristy Thing
There is a Chinatown in Jalan Petaling Street not too far away from the city centre. You will see many locals here selling all the souvenirs, shirts, bags and even fake branded stuff.
There is also a food street located in the same Chinatown. How to find it? Simple, just walk to the centre of the Chinatown and you will see a whole row of food, because this Chinatown is build on a cross junction which intersects each other.
I have made up a walking video tour of the start of Chinatown, into Chinatown and a short video of what to expect here. We'll this is worth a visit when you are in KL, you don't need to buy anything but who knows you might find something that interest you! Do remember haggling here is allowed!!!

The Iconic Bunn Choon Restaurant
There are alot of traditional bakery and DimSum in Kuala Lumpur and the question is only to find the popular ones. You should head to Bunn Choon Reataurant for really good Dim Sum, dim sum that they will only prepare fresh and pipping hot on the spot for you.
Bunn choon located at no.8, Lorong Panggung, City Centre is a very popular dim sum place especially for locals and their sitting location is located on the 2nd floor since the 1st floor is used for take aways and baking of pastries.
I recommend to head there early as we were turned down at 830 for a fully book restaurant as they also have less than 10 table sitting. But thankfully someone left and we manage to take a spot and have a taste of this legendary dim sum. Do try out the salted egg bao, glutinous rice and also the porridge which I find them outstanding, the rest is of course equally good too! The prices here are so reasonable and only 5.50 - 10Rm, depending on the items you order.

Chinatown @ KL
Whole stretch of Petaling street full of stores selling masks, souvenirs and cheap fake branded items. This place is like street market. There is also some food like traditional peanut dessert or muah chee.
When we shop here we have to be careful not to get cheated and must be very good in bargaining. For example is for mask, price is different in every store. The further we went to, we found cheaper price of mask as low as RM0.9 although same brand & products.
Discover the true chinatown area that reminds me of hong kong, phuket and bali street market. Still very quite here, be tourist and explore around to find good deals. Cars can pass by here so be careful of your way!

Fabulous Speakeasy Bar in Chinatown KL
Address - 150, Jalan Petaling, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Ambiance/Facilities - old abandoned look but hip
Highlights - Cocktails with local twist
Avg. Price per Person - RM60-100
Rating - 4 stars
To enter, you need to find the hidden door behind a toy stall at the address. once inside, you will walk thru an abandoned looking long shophouse to reach the bar area. Very friendly service, do order a cocktail with a local twist (one with a very Singapore name - Don’t Say Bojio).
Must sure you go early on Friday or Saturday night as this place fill up very fast. in case you can’t find it, it’s right opposite of Four Points by Sheraton Chinatown.

HOLD BACK THE RIVER
#malaysiatrip
The River of life is where two rivers converge (The Klang & Gombak River), and it used to be dirty, muddy, and murky. Thanks to some agencies, The River of Life project was then started in an effort to clean up the Klang River and create a bustling, commercially valuable waterfront.
Getting There - It took about 6-15 minutes of driving (depending on the traffic flow) and approximately 2.7KM from KL Sentral.
Attractions - Strolling next to the riverfront and being attracted to the beautiful surroundings is ultimately worth it.
Hotels - There are few hotels around that area. I would recommend travellers to stay at Pacific Express Hotel.
Food & Restaurants - Many street food and restaurants can be found nearby this area.
Shopping - Just beside the River of Life there's a market called Central Market. Here visitors can buy many types of souvenirs at the cheapest price.
