🇨🇭 City Walking in Bern
Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is one of the best preserved old cities in Europe. If you have the chance it is definitely worth spending some time exploring this UNESCO world heritage site! We spent half a day city walking in Bern. Its charming Old Town, historic sites and cultural attractions are within walking distance from Bern train station.
The most iconic landmark that you will not miss is the clock tower in the heart of Bern called the Zytglogge which features an astronomical clock with moving figurines.
Take a leisurely stroll along Kramgasse, one of the main streets in the Old Town. This cobblestone street is lined with medieval buildings, shops, and cafes. You can find Zähringer Fountain along Kramgasse.

🇵🇹 Well preserved Evora Old Town, Portugal
Evora is the capital of Portugal's south-central Alentejo region. It was incribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The city's historic centre is small enough to be explored on foot. You can start exploring from Giraldo Square (Praça do Giraldo), the main square in Évora surrounded by notable landmarks, historic buildings, shops, cafes, and restaurants. You certainly won't miss the landmarks such as the ancient Roman Temple of Évora (also called the Temple of Diana) from 1st century, Cathedral of Évora from 12th century and also spectacular stone aqueduct that borders the old town from the 16th century. I like the old town centre as it is well-preserved. You can see a lot of medieval walls amidst the new buildings.

Port Arther Historical Site UNESCO 🇦🇺
#australiatrip
Port Arthur, the prison at the end of the world in Port Arthur, Tasmania, is a historical site located in the southeastern part of Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺. It is famous for being a place of exile during the 19th century British colonial period. This place was initially established in the 1830s as a place to punish prisoners, especially those considered to have a high recidivism rate. The establishment of Port Arthur was based on the popular concept of punishment at that time, which was to transform prisoners through harsh environments and physical labor ⛓️.
Arthur Harbour, as one of Australia's most famous historical sites, attracts thousands of tourists every year. It is listed as a World Heritage Site not only because it showcases the history of the 19th-century prisoner system, but also because it reveals the complexity of early Australian society and culture 🏛️.
Port Arthur is not only a prison complex but also includes hospitals, madhouses, churches, and schools, as well as residential areas for prisoners and the military. The prisoners here were used for arduous physical labor such as logging, construction, and shipbuilding, which played an important role in the development of Tasmania at that time 🔨.

The love story behind the Taj Mahal.
Standing before the Taj Mahal, I was enveloped in a sense of awe and reverence. The ethereal beauty of its white marble facade gleamed under the golden rays of the sun, casting a spellbinding aura. As I stepped through the grand entrance, intricate details adorned every inch, telling the story of undying love and exquisite craftsmanship.
Walking along the manicured gardens, I marveled at the symmetrical perfection that surrounded me, each element meticulously designed to create harmony and balance. Inside the mausoleum, the air was thick with solemnity, yet infused with a lingering sense of love that transcended time.
Gazing upon the tombs of Shah Jahan and his beloved Mumtaz Mahal, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of reverence for their enduring love immortalized in stone. Truly, the Taj Mahal is a testament to the power of love and the pinnacle of architectural brilliance.

🇱🇰 Must Visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites
#freehotelstay
The ancient city of Sigiriya and Dambulla cave temple are two of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka that you should not miss if you visit Sri Lanka. The two sites are just 20 km apart so it is possible to visit both attractions within the same day.
Getting There -
The most convenient way to reach Sigiriya is by hiring a private car. The cheapest way is by taking local buses. We took 2 different local buses from Negombo and got off at Dambulla. It was fun albeit slightly inconvenient as we got to experience it the local way. From Dambulla you can either take a public bus or hire a tuk-tuk to Sigiriya.
Attractions -
1) Sigiriya Lion Rock: An ancient fortress built on top of a rock column
2) Dambulla Cave Temple: The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island
3) Minneriya National Park: Within an hour drive from Sigiriya, the park houses hundreds of Asian elephants which thrive on the Minneriya Tank.
Hotels -
We stayed in Hotel Sigiriya 2 km away from the entrance of Sigiriya Lion Rock with amazing views of the Lion Rock from the outdoor pool area.
Food & Restaurants -
There are plenty of roadside restaurants along Sigiriya Road and Hotel Road. Some of them offer a good view of the Sigiriya Lion Rock.

Halong Bay is a popular destination for most tourists when visiting Hanoi due to its natural like limestone mountains and caves spread out in the amazing emerald waters which also made this place a UNESCO heritage site.
During our trip, we chose to stay on the Athena Luxury Cruise and indeed it's cruise lives up to its name. We stayed in the Athena Royal Suite which has a paranormal view from our room and is situated at the highest floor of our cruise. The room also has a bathtub and a private balcony which takes up almost 1/4 of the entire deck. The basin and taps are painted gold in colour making you feel like a royal king on board.
This was one amazing stay indeed for us.

Humayun's Tomb, located in Delhi, India, is a significant historical and architectural landmark. Built in 1570, it was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent and inspired several major architectural innovations, culminating in the construction of the Taj Mahal. The tomb was commissioned in 1569, after the death of the Mughal emperor Humayun in 1556, by his Persian queen, Hamida Banu Begam. It was designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mihrza Ghiyas.
The tomb is situated on a 27.04 hectare (0.1044 sq mi) plot, and its surrounding buffer zone covers an additional 53.21 hectares (0.2054 sq mi). The structure is an early example of Mughal-era architecture and is characterized by its garden setting and sandstone construction. The tomb houses the remains of several prominent personalities from the Mughal era, including the founder of the Mughal dynasty, Emperor Babur
Key features of Humayun's Tomb include:
Garden Setting: The tomb is located within a garden that is divided into four large squares by means of causeways and water channels. Each square is further subdivided, resulting in a total of 16 subdivisions.
Tombe: The tomb occupies the four central squares of the garden.
Baradari and Hammam: Within the tomb's premises are a baradari (pillared pavilion) and a hammam (bath chamber).
Influence: The tomb inspired several other significant architectural achievements, including the Taj Mahal.
In 1993, Humayun's Tomb was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, it serves as a popular tourist destination, showcasing the rich history and architectural heritage of the Mughal era in India.
Borobudur: The Largest Buddhist Temple
#christmastrip
Borobudur temple, located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is a magnificent architectural masterpiece that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the country. Built in the 9th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. The temple is adorned with intricate carvings and boasts a unique design that represents Buddhist cosmology.
Visiting Borobudur is a truly awe-inspiring experience. As you climb the temple's terraces, you'll be greeted with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including lush green fields and distant mountains. The detailed stone reliefs that cover the walls tell the story of Buddha's life and teachings, making it a fascinating journey through history.
The temple is especially mesmerizing during sunrise, when the soft golden light bathes the ancient stones and creates a magical atmosphere. It's a popular spot for photography enthusiasts, who flock to capture the ethereal beauty of the temple against the backdrop of the rising sun.
The site is well-maintained, and visitors are provided with special slippers, a small bottle of water, and informative guides who offer interesting insights into the temple's history and significance. The serene surroundings and tranquil ambiance make Borobudur a perfect place for meditation and introspection.
It's important to note that visiting Borobudur involves climbing several steep steps, so it's advisable to wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Additionally, it's recommended to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and the hot sun and enjoy the serenity of the temple.
There are two types of tickets so if you’re looking to climb the steps and look at the temple more closely, you need to buy the more expensive ticket. The other ticket only lets you into the temple grounds that surround the temple.

🇱🇰 Sigiriya lion Rock, the First UNESCO world heritage site in Sri Lanka
#freehotelstay
Type "Sri Lanka" in Google images and I'm sure the first few images you see will be the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock. Inscribed in 1982 as one of the first UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress built in the fifth century which stands around 200 m high.
The Sigiriya Fortress has an interesting history. It was built by King Kasyapa, the second king of the royal Moriya dynasty of Sri Lanka. He was not the rightful heir and acquired the throne by rebelling against his father. He built the palace right on top of the rock column to avoid potential attacks from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir to the throne. He was defeated by Moggallana 22 years after ascending to the throne. The fortress was used as a monastery after Kasyapa’s death till it was abandoned in the 14th century. A few hundreds years later, it was discovered by British Army Major Jonathan Forbes in 1831.
Be prepared to have a workout while visiting the Lion Rock as there are around 1200 steps of stairs to climb throughout the visit. The amount of time taken to reach the top depends on your fitness level and also the crowd. We took about 2 hours to explore the site.
A foreign adult ticket costs USD 30 while a foreign child ticket costs USD 15. Tickets can be bought online from the official website or from the ticket office onsite. The site opens from 6.30 am to 5.30 pm every day. It is better to arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon (last entry at 4 pm) to avoid the scorching sun.

Inscribed in 1991 as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island country. The temple complex was built into five caves under overhanging rock and has been a sacred pilgrimage site since 22 centuries ago. The Buddhist mural paintings and statues in the caves are sights to behold.
The cave temple is located up on a hill 20 km from Sigiriya. The entrance ticket costs 2000 rupees per person and can only be bought at the ticket counter at the foot of the hill. From there we had to climb many flights of stairs to reach the entrance of the temple. The view of the the surrounding area on the way up was spectacular. Before entering the temple we had to remove our shoes so wearing socks is recommended. Remember to wear modest clothing that covers your knee and shoulder while visiting sacred sites. There are lots of street sellers outside the temple selling sarong. It is also possible to rent a sarong to cover your knees before entering the temple.
