I chased the sunset in Tonga. This coastline healed my mental fatigue After finishing my study tour in Sydney, I didn’t rush back home but bought a ticket to Tonga. Landing on Tongatapu Island, the largest island in Tonga and home to the capital Nukuʻalofa, Tongatapu is the country’s administrative and commercial center. I traveled solo in Tonga for 4 days, including 2 days renting a car to circle the main island (see earlier notes), and 2 days hiking alone. This time I’m sharing a relaxed and hassle-free walking route in the city center: Starting from Tanoa International Dateline Hotel in Nukuʻalofa, part of the Tanoa Hotel Group, enjoy a leisurely walk in the city, all along the seaside, stopping by famous coffee shops, and ending with dinner at a seaside Chinese restaurant. Here’s the route: 🏨 Hotel departure → seaside stroll → Tonga royal palace Step out of the hotel onto Vuna Road coastal walkway. Walk west along the coast for about 13–16 minutes to see the red-roofed, white-walled Tonga royal palace (Royal Palace). Built in 1867, photos are only allowed from outside and on the lawn. 👑 Palace → royal tomb → Friends Cafe Walk from the palace to Mala'ekula (royal tomb). Then head to Friends Cafe in the city center. Many call this the best coffee shop in town. It has an elegant atmosphere and serves local and international dishes. ☕ Friends Cafe → Talamahu Market → return to hotel After coffee, walk to Talamahu Market, Tonga’s largest market for fresh produce and handicrafts. The market is worth exploring; belts, oil paintings, and fans are very delicate. It’s only a 6–15 minute walk back to Tanoa Hotel, so you can leisurely stroll back with some souvenirs. 🍽️ Dinner: seaside Chinese restaurant For dinner, visit the Coastline Hotel Chinese restaurant near the hotel. It’s an authentic Chinese seafood restaurant with a Cantonese-speaking chef. The restaurant is right by the sea, offering bay views while dining. The whole walk takes about 3 hours with stops.
