The well still exists today, with a constant water temperature of 72°C. It is a medium sulfur hot spring rich in more than 20 minerals. The entire resort area is covered by 96% forest. Once inside, your phone signal drops by one bar, but honestly, in a place like this, a weaker signal is actually a good thing. · My Hot Spring Routine Don’t rush to soak as soon as you arrive. First, take a walk around the resort. There is a forest trail winding around the valley, about 40 minutes long, passing several natural spring outlets. Some are steaming, with water bubbling out from cracks in the rocks. One spring is enclosed and made into a free foot bath. Sitting on a wooden bench and dipping your feet in, the water temperature is just over 40 degrees Celsius. After soaking for ten minutes, the soles of your feet turn red and warm. The hardware isn’t luxurious. But what it offers is a sense of wilderness. While soaking, you can hear birds singing, insects chirping, and the sound of streams flowing through the valley. Occasionally, you hear the crisp snap of a branch breaking under an unknown animal’s foot. At night, soaking in the open-air pools, the stars overhead are so numerous it feels almost unreal. Honestly, before visiting Tianzhu Peak, I spent a long time researching and still couldn’t figure out what made it special. After going, I realized that the charm of this place lies entirely on the water’s surface. How you enter the mountain determines what you see Tianzhu Peak isn’t about hiking; it’s about taking a boat. From the visitor center to Jiulong Lake Pier, there’s a shuttle bus ride. Once you reach the pier, you switch to a tour boat. Five minutes into the boat ride, you’ll understand why this scenic area doesn’t rely on hiking—the bright red Danxia cliffs rise straight out of the water, the mountains are reflected on the surface, and the colors deepen with the water’s tint. The whole scene is as rich as an oil painting that hasn’t dried yet. As the boat moves across the lake, the rocks on both sides constantly change shape. One huge rock that looks like a finger juts out from the cliff; the guide called it the “Immortal’s Finger Pointing the Way.” I’m usually indifferent to such names, but that rock itself is truly extraordinary and looks great from every angle. When I visited at the end of June, the mountain temperature was about 21°C (70°F). Wearing short sleeves felt a bit chilly, so I recommend bringing a light jacket. The most surprising thing on the trail was a scent: wild mugwort. The mountains around Tonggu are full of wild mugwort, and June is when it’s growing most vigorously. Every few steps, you catch a spicy yet sweet aroma mixed with the damp earthy smell of forest leaf mold. This year, the scenic area held a Dragon Boat Festival lakeside garden event. Visitors received fresh mugwort bundles at the entrance, and there were picking and floral DIY activities around the lake. The commercial vibe was light, and I found this level of event very acceptable. Photo tips The best time to take photos at Tianzhu Peak is around 3 to 4 p.m. The sun leans west, shining from the canyon’s west side, turning the Danxia cliffs a deep orange-red that reflects on the emerald lake, creating a strong contrast. Recommended photo spots: the stern on the second deck of the boat, where you can use a telephoto lens to compress the lake and distant mountains; and the platform at the end of the Heavenly Ladder trail, where you can look back at the lake and mountain group in a shot with very few people around. A little unrelated story about Tianzhu Peak On the drive from Changsha, the driver kept playing a DJ version of “The Sun That Never Sets on the Grassland.” The electronic drum beats mixed with folk melodies got stuck in my head for the entire two-hour ride. Five-star level earworm. What to eat in Tonggu Tonggu is a purely Hakka county, and the food tends to be salty and savory. One local dish is called “Baoyuan,” similar to large tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) but with a savory filling. It’s stuffed with cured meat, shiitake mushrooms, and diced bamboo shoots wrapped in glutinous rice skin, steamed until translucent. When you bite into it, the filling’s oil flows out. Also, Tonggu has many Polygonatum (huangjing) products, like Polygonatum tea and candied Polygonatum. The taste isn’t stunning but is very healthy. I bought two packs of candied Polygonatum at a small shop near the scenic area entrance and finished them as snacks on the way.
