England's only mountain forest did not disappoint. We arrived to find maintenance closures, so we took the detour: up Seat How trail and down Wow trail. 🗺️✨ The climb was tough at places but so worth it. Those towering pines stand like nature's skyscrapers, and the higher we got, the better the views – include Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. 😍 The Summit was pure magic. We've climbed Catbells before – that classic ridge with its famous scramble and sweeping lake views. But this time staying in Keswick, we wanted something different. Something quick, rewarding and perfect for an evening wander straight from town. Enter Castlehead Viewpoint. 🌲Just a 10-minute walk from Keswick's Moot Hall, you're suddenly plunging into woodland, following a winding path that kicks up sharply near the summit. It is steep! But the payoff is instant. 💪 The View: 360° panorama of Derwentwater encircled by fells, plus views of Keswick, Bassenthwaite Lake and the Scafell range. At the top sits an old bronze orientation dial from the 1920s names 30 peaks – and we had an absolute blast using it to pick out every major fell. 🗺️ Skiddaw to the north, the whole Newlands Valley opening up behind Catbells, and even the Scafell range glinting in the distance. We spotted them all – including Catbells, which brought back fond memories of our previous climb. If you're staying in Keswick, even for one night, make time for this. Standing proudly at 931\text{ meters} (3,054\text{ feet}), Skiddaw is the fourth-highest mountain in England and dominates the skyline above the bustling market town of Keswick. Unlike its jagged, rocky neighbor Blencathra, Skiddaw is an immense, smooth-backed giant formed of ancient slate. It offers walkers a wonderfully straightforward, high-altitude mountain day out with some of the most expansive, unobstructed views across Cumbria, the Solway Firth, and even over to Scotland on a clear day. The Walk & Atmosphere The Scale: The defining feature of Skiddaw is its massive, commanding presence. Because it sits somewhat isolated from the main bulk of the Lake District fells, the sense of elevation hits you almost immediately as you climb, offering spectacular, panoramic views of Derwentwater and the Borrowdale valley unfolding below. The Terrain: The trails up Skiddaw are generally wide, smooth, and exceptionally well-trodden, lacking the technical scrambles or exposed ridges found on other English peaks. However, what it lacks in technical difficulty, it makes up for in a relentless, steady incline that will thoroughly test your leg endurance. Classic Walking Routes The Tourist Path (Jenkin Hill): Starting from the Gale Lane car park at the foot of Latrigg, this is the most popular and straightforward route. It follows a distinct, wide path that climbs steadily up the spine of the mountain. While it is a steep, unyielding slog up Jenkin Hill, the navigation is incredibly simple, making it a great option for an introduction to walking at 3,000\text{ feet}. The Skiddaw Little Man Detour: As you make your way up the main path, taking a brief, short detour to the summit of Skiddaw Little Man is highly recommended. It offers arguably a better, more dramatic viewpoint down into Keswick and across the lake than the main summit itself. The Ullock Pike Ridge: For walkers seeking a quieter, more dramatic, and far more scenic ascent, starting from Ravenstone on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake and climbing via the sharp, undulating ridge of Ullock Pike, Long Side, and Carl Side is the absolute premier route up the mountain. The Summit Plateau Arriving on the true summit of Skiddaw feels like stepping onto another planet. The top is a vast, desolate, and beautifully windswept plateau of dark, loose slate. A distinct line of stone shelters and a triangulation pillar mark the top, offering a brilliant spot to take a well-earned break and look out across the vast expanses of the northern fells and the Scottish hills on the horizon. Hiker Tips & Logistics Prepare for the Cold: Because the summit is a completely exposed, high-altitude plateau, it has its own microclimate. The temperature at the top can be drastically lower than in Keswick, and the wind chill can be biting. Always pack a warm mid-layer, a high-quality windbreaker, and a dry hat and gloves, even in mid-summer. Footwear Advice: The loose shale and scree near the summit ridge can be incredibly slippery on the descent. Sturdy walking boots with good ankle support and deep grip are highly recommended to prevent any slides. Parking: The Gale Lane car park fills up incredibly early on weekends and sunny holidays. Arrive early to secure a space, or consider walking directly up from the center of Keswick via the lovely woodland paths of Fitz Park and Latrigg. Pro Tip: Once you have made your descent, head straight into the center of Keswick. Celebrating a successful summit of Skiddaw with a hearty meal, a hot brew, or a well-earned pint of local Cumbrian ale.
