Summer Vacation Trip with Kids: 8 Stops with Fewer Crowds and Unique Scenery - A Complete Guide
Summer vacation getaways with kids? Don't always stick to crowded, popular destinations. These 8 places are either cool, scenic, or perfect for letting your kids run around freely. I've had my share of successes and failures, so just copy my advice.
1️⃣ Karamay City | Xinjiang
Don't be put off by Xinjiang's distance. Head straight to Urho World Devil City after landing, and you'll thank me. The days are sunny, but the dry heat isn't humid, and the wind brings the rugged feel of the Gobi Desert.
⏰ Entering the park after 6 PM is ideal. The sunlight shines obliquely on the Yardang landforms, turning the "castles" and "giant ships" golden-red, and your kids will excitedly shout, "Dinosaur bones!"
The park's mini-train is a must, but don't just ride it.
📍 The area between the second and third stops is the least crowded. Take your kids up a low hill, where the ground is cracked and dry, and eagles circle overhead.
⚠️ Don't go at midday! The ground temperature is hot enough to fry an egg. Also, don't let children run too far; the soft, weathered surface can easily cause a sprained ankle.
Back in the city in the evening, find a local restaurant for a big plate of chicken. The potatoes are stewed until they're soft and mushy, and the kids can easily eat two bowls of naan bread dipped in the broth. After this trip, he doesn't need to memorize the "Yardang landforms" in his geography book anymore; he's memorized them all.
2️⃣ Lianyungang City | Jiangsu Province
Visit Huaguo Mountain and Lian Island in one day, but don't get the order wrong. If you have enough energy in the morning, go to Huaguo Mountain first. Take the bus from the mountain gate to Yunu Peak, then walk downhill. This way, it's all downhill, so the kids won't get tired. You absolutely must visit the Water Curtain Cave. Although the waterfall is man-made, the cave is dark and damp, and the kids will be crawling in and out, feeling like they're Sun Wukong!
📍 Don't feed the monkeys at the entrance of Sanyuan Palace. They're incredibly fast at grabbing food, and you might get scratched. In the afternoon, we moved to Lian Island, about a 40-minute drive away. I recommend visiting this island in the evening; after 5 pm, the sun at Dashawan Beach is less intense, the sand is fine and comfortable underfoot. Kids can play in the sand, and you can rent a parasol, lie down, and listen to the waves – ten times more relaxing than sitting in an air-conditioned office.
🍜 Don't eat at the seafood stalls on the island; they're expensive and mediocre. Back in the city, find a local restaurant; spicy stir-fried clams with draft beer will satisfy both adults and children.
⚠️ The Huaguoshan cable car queue is notoriously long; during peak season, the wait can be an hour, even at 2 or 3 pm. Parents with young children are advised to skip the cable car altogether and walk down the mountain, which only takes about 40 minutes.
3️⃣ Anshan City|Liaoning
Qianshan is not a single mountain, but a group of mountains, so don't expect to see them all in one day. For children, I recommend only the "Sky Above Sky" route. Start climbing from Wuliang Temple; the steps aren't too steep, and the route is lined with ancient pines and strangely shaped rocks.
📍 The "Flat Stone" is a natural crevice; a slender person can only squeeze through sideways. Children feel a great sense of accomplishment when they crawl through it. Adults who get stuck shouldn't panic; there's an alternative route.
⏰ Arrive at the mountain gate before 8 AM. The air is filled with the scent of pine needles, birds are chirping merrily, and there are so few people you can hear your own footsteps. Climbing to "Heaven on Heaven" takes about two hours. It's windy at the summit, so bring a light jacket for your children. Don't return the same way down; take the path to the Bird Park. You can see peacocks displaying their plumage, and children can sit and watch for half an hour.
⚠️ Bottled water costs 10 yuan a bottle on the mountain; it's recommended to bring two. Also, there are vendors selling "wild mountain vegetables" at the foot of Qianshan Mountain. They look fresh, but many are greenhouse-grown. Just enjoy the view; don't take it too seriously.
4️⃣ Baoding City | Hebei Province
Of these four places in Baoding, I suggest you choose one. The Western Qing Tombs, Baishi Mountain, Yesanpo, and Baiyangdian are completely different in style; don't try to visit too many. Want your child to experience history? Go to the Western Qing Tombs.
⚠️ It's surprisingly uncrowded, but the architectural grandeur is undiminished.
📍 The spirit path of the Tai Mausoleum is long and straight, allowing children to run freely. The stone statues on both sides are taller than life-size, and they'll chase after you asking, "Is that elephant real?" The ticket includes an audio guide; rent one and listen while you explore—it's much more interesting than just looking.
If you want to play in the water, go to Yesanpo or Baiyangdian. Bailixia Gorge in Yesanpo is cooler, with streams throughout the gorge, where children can spend an afternoon splashing and playing. Baiyangdian offers a different kind of charm; take a boat ride through the reed beds, where lotus flowers bloom, and lotus pods are only five yuan each—peel them open and eat them fresh; they're incredibly sweet.
🍜 Baiyangdian's stewed mixed fish is a signature dish; the iron pot-baked flatbread dipped in the broth will have your child eating half a bowl more rice.
However, if you're short on time, I recommend focusing on just one spot. Don't try to visit two places in one day; it'll be tiring and the kids will get bored.
5️⃣ Ganzhou City | Jiangxi Province
Shicheng and Sanbaishan offer different experiences – one for cultural sites, the other for natural scenery – which can be split into two days. Shicheng isn't a county town, but an ancient village. The ancient houses in Dashe Village are exceptionally well-preserved, with their blue bricks, gray tiles, and exquisitely carved lintels. Kids might not understand the architecture, but the lotus pond in the village will have them running around like crazy. In summer, the lotus leaves are taller than a person, perfect for playing hide-and-seek – they'll be sweating but still have fun.
Sanbaishan is the source of the Dongjiang River, and the water is truly crystal clear.
⏰ Go in the morning. Walk along the boardwalk; you'll see waterfalls and deep pools all along the way. The mist is refreshing, and the temperature feels several degrees lower than outside. Kids can fill empty bottles with water from the source and brag to their classmates, "I filled a bottle with water from the source of the Pearl River!"
⚠️ Some sections of the boardwalk lack railings, so hold small children's hands tightly.
🍜 There's an old shop in Shicheng that makes taro dumplings. The wrappers are made of smooth taro, and the filling is minced meat and mushrooms. Kids can easily eat five in one go. A good meal before setting off gives them a different kind of energy.
6️⃣ Baishan City|Jilin
Changbai Mountain is best visited in summer. Wear short sleeves at the foot of the mountain, and a down jacket on the mountain – experience all four seasons in a single day. For children, I strongly recommend the North Slope, as it has the best facilities and requires less climbing.
⏰ You need to leave at 6 AM to be among the first to reach the main peak. At this time, you're likely to see Tianchi Lake. After 9 AM, the clouds will rise, and you'll only see a whiteout.
It's windy at the main peak, so rent a down jacket for 30 yuan. Don't worry about the price; catching a cold is much more troublesome. When you see Tianchi Lake, your child will be quiet for a few seconds, then exclaim, "It looks like a sapphire!" It's worth it.
📍 After descending the mountain, don't rush off. Head to Green Abyss Pool; the water is emerald green, and the waterfall, though small, is quite beautiful. Kids can easily spend ages watching it from the railing.
⚠️ Food near the North Slope gate is expensive and unappetizing; it's recommended to bring self-heating rice. It starts raining at the foot of the mountain after 3 PM, so it's best to descend before 2 PM, otherwise, the wait for transportation can be unbearable.
7️⃣ Guiyang City|Guizhou
Guiyang is like a natural air conditioner in the summer, with temperatures in the mid-20s—incredibly comfortable. Tianhetan, Qingyan Ancient Town, Gaopo Cloud Top Grassland, and Huaxi Park—I'll rank them for you.
For younger children, Huaxi Park is sufficient. The water is shallow, there are many trees, and the lawn is large; kids can take off their shoes and wade in the stream.
📍 The park's Golden Avenue is shaded by sycamore trees, and in the afternoon, dappled sunlight filters through the trees—perfect for a picnic blanket and a relaxing afternoon.
For older children, go to Tianhetan. This is a miniature version of karst topography. Take a boat into the cave, where colorful stalactites will have your children constantly asking, "Is this real?"
⏰ Go after 2 PM to avoid tour groups; the cave will be less crowded, doubling the experience.
Gaopo Cloud Top Grassland is not recommended for a day trip; it's too far and the route is winding. However, if you stay overnight, watching the sunrise and sunset, with the sea of clouds surging below, is a breathtaking experience your children will remember for a lifetime.
⚠️ It's windy on the grassland, so sunscreen and hats are essential.
🍜 The braised pig's feet in Qingyan Ancient Town are tender and flavorful; a serving after a long walk will revitalize you.
8️⃣ Lu'an City | Anhui
Tiantangzhai and Wanfo Lake, one a mountain, the other water, perfectly complement each other, creating a dynamic yet tranquil scene.
The waterfalls at Tiantangzhai are the main attraction. As you ascend, you'll encounter a series of nine interconnected waterfalls; at each viewing platform, your children will exclaim "Wow!" ⏰ Entering the mountains at 8 AM, the air was so humid you could wring water out of it. Reaching the waterfall, the water droplets splashed on your face, feeling refreshingly cool.
📍 Don't take the cable car; hike up the mountain. Wild monkeys along the way will ask for food; don't give them any, or they'll pester you relentlessly.
Wanfo Lake is better visited in the afternoon. Take a boat tour of the lake, where one island after another appears.
📍 The peacocks on Swallow Island are free-range and will suddenly fly overhead, startling and delighting children. The lake is windy, so bring a jacket for your children.
🍜 Jinzhai's hanging pot is a specialty; the local chicken is stewed until the meat falls off the bone, served with crispy rice. A child can easily devour a whole chicken leg.
⚠️ Grilled sausages are 10 yuan each inside the Wanfo Lake scenic area, but 5 yuan outside. Be patient and buy them outside.
None of these eight places are created using "Instagrammable" filters. The wilderness of Karamay, the frigid chill of Changbai Mountain, and the humidity of Guiyang—all are quintessential summer destinations. Which one would you most like to take your kids to? Let's discuss in the comments.
When taking your kids out for summer vacation, don't always stick to the crowded, hottest destinations. These 8 places are either cool, scenic, or allow your children to run freely. I've had my share of successes and failures, so you can just copy my suggestions.
