I drifted to sleep while the old boat was pushing lazily against the current; after more than an hour I was surrounded by a magical forest of stone, surreal spires piercing the clouds, as if trying to scratch the blue of the sky. Was this a dream? I got off the boat and started walking deeper into the canyon, huge yellow walls on both sides, and a drowning forest in the midst of the gorge. After a few hundred meters I saw him, a giant Buddha; it looked like it was tired and decided to sit, leaning against one of the walls of the canyons. He must have been very tired because he has been sitting like this for a few hundred years. Bingling Si is located where the silty waters of the Yellow River meet the clear mirror of the Lujiaxia reservoir. You can take a slow or a fast boat from the Lujiaxia dam to reach it. It’s an ancient place with numerous displays of Buddhist art, including a giant Buddha statue. #historicplaces

Went to Yongjing, Gansu for 2 days. The main reason to go here is the Bingling Si (Bingling Temple) We took the boat across the reservoir to see the temple, but that was a mistake. I highly recommend skipping the boat transport and just hire a car to drive you there. The boat system is not good unless you have a large group/family. And the boat captain determines how much time you have at the temple. The temple had construction as of August 2020 so you are limited to what you can do and see there. I felt frustrated and disappointed as this was not told to us by anyone. If I would have known, I would have skipped this and chose to spend my time seeing something else. Yongjing is a nice small city. We walked around the old town and explored the area. We asked our hotel and taxi driver for the biggest and best shopping mall. They both recommended the same place. We wanted to go there because we assumed we could find a nice restaurant to try, but no. The “big” mall was mostly empty. the first floor had some shops open, but about 70% of the mall was empty or closed. We continued walking around the streets looking for a place to eat. The most popular restaurant according the dianping app, closes at 4:00pm. So we just tried some random Sichuan style restaurant and it was amazing! 👍🏼 After that, we dropped some stuff at our hotel and asked the hotel about any interesting areas or parks. The hotel lady recommended we cross the bridge and check out the massive flower park. Crossing the bridge we could see a lot of the area was flooded. The heavy rains have caused the river water to rise and it covered a lot of the land. However, we continued across and saw very large displays of flowers. We did a lot of research before departure, but still got caught off guard by altitude sickness😭 Fortunately, the scenery along the way was absolutely stunning, and the kids had a great time! On the first day at Meiren Grassland, at 3600 meters altitude, I got a headache immediately, and the child was also breathing heavily. That night, after taking ibuprofen and resting flat, I finally recovered. So! If you're going to Gannan, always carry altitude sickness medicine with you! Don’t tough it out if you have a headache! 🌟 Blood, sweat, and tears compiled super practical tips 1️⃣ Dayugou vs Zhagana? I want both! I was originally torn about only going to Zhagana, but after altitude sickness in Hezuo, we changed plans and went to Dayugou first. Unexpectedly, it was a treasure! Fewer people, beautiful scenery, and lower altitude—perfect for elderly and kids~ ⚠️ Warning: After rain, the water in Ajiagou turns yellow. If you want to photograph emerald green streams, watch the weather carefully! 🏠 Accommodation recommendation: Zhuoni Luoyang Home, a clean and cozy guesthouse 🍖 Food recommendation: "Jiuhe Niba" in Zhuoni County, Tibetan cuisine so delicious you'll lick your plate! I thought I wouldn’t like it, but ended up loving it from the first bite! 2️⃣ Rock Road: Bumpy but worth it! From Dayugou, we crossed Rock Road to Zhagana. The 30 km "washboard road" was so bumpy it made me question life, but the scenery was truly amazing! Guardrails have now been installed along the roadside, so it’s not as dangerous as imagined~ 🍲 Zhagana dining guide: Dongga’er Tibetan Restaurant, the owner cooks personally! Tibetan fragrant pork is a must-order, and the hotpot is also very tasty! 3️⃣ Namo Grand Canyon: A paradise for kids! I planned to turn back halfway, but when the kid heard there were marmots, she pulled me all the way to the end! The whole trip took about 25 minutes, and seeing the marmots digging holes was worth it! When I asked the kid which spot she liked best, this was her first answer~ If you’re hiking with kids, just go for it! 4️⃣ Grassland check-in and pitfall avoidance guide Sanke Grassland is okay to just pass by; the wetland has little water and the scenery is average. Guomang Wetland is worth stopping at; standing on the viewing platform and feeling the breeze is so comfortable! 5️⃣ Linxia hidden gems for food, drink, accommodation, and transport To avoid altitude sickness, we drove straight from Zhagana to Linxia! 🍗 Food recommendation: Gajiu Yi Big Plate Chicken, chicken is tender and flavorful; Yasar Yogurt, sweet and sour, thick and refreshing; Bafang Shisan Street Maqi Beef, locals line up for it! 🏨 Accommodation recommendation: Tianyuan Wanda Jinhua, rooms are spacious and comfortable 👧 Kid’s favorite: Horse riding at Songmingyan, the little one couldn’t stop smiling on the horse! 6️⃣ No-fail accommodation in Lanzhou Hyatt and Lanzhou Old Street Puyan Hotel are both good, close to downtown and convenient for travel~ 💡 Other small tips - Altitude sickness emergency kit: ibuprofen, oxygen bottle, glucose are essential! Today we bid farewell to Qinghai after 8 days of sightseeing and return to Gansu. The Yellow River, the mother river of the Chinese nation, meanders eastward through the northwest. To attract tourists and develop tourism, many places have claimed to be the "First Bend of the Yellow River". The place we stayed last night, Hualong County, also claims to be the "First Bend". We took off and filmed a section of the river at a suitable location along the way (Pic 1). The Yellow River here is even clearer than what we saw in Guide the day before yesterday. The Yellow River flows slowly here, as smooth as a mirror (Pic 2). We set off for Bingling Temple in Linxia Prefecture.
