Light has a way of redesigning a city faster than any architect; I absolutely love these "light exercises." Sometimes they are accidental and free, yet completely brilliant. Today isn't about looking back. I’ve put together a list of places you can still make it to in 2026. Here are my top 8. 1. PROSVET, Perm August 28 to 30. FREE: All main installations and mapping. PAID: Only the multimedia party on August 29. PRO TIP: If you’re just there for the light, you don’t need a ticket at all. Start at the Shpagin Factory at 7:00 PM and finish at the Opera and Ballet Theater after 8:30 PM. 2. Festival of Lights, Berlin October 9 to 18. FREE: The entire main program. PRO TIP: Skip the €23 boat tour. The organizers honestly warn that the illuminated buildings aren't visible from the water. You're better off walking from the TV Tower to the Brandenburg Gate. 3. GLOW, Eindhoven November 7 to 14. FREE: The festival and digital map. PAID: The paper map costs €2. PRO TIP: Arrive via Eindhoven Centraal. The city center is closed to traffic in the evening, so bringing a car will only lead to the wrong kind of "adventure." 4. Amsterdam Light Festival November 26, 2026, to January 17, 2027. On my trip to the Australian outback this time, I specifically came to admire the spectacular Uluru (Ayers Rock) and intentionally chose to stay in the Yulara area for a few days. The Southern Hemisphere is currently heading into winter, which is actually the most comfortable time to visit Uluru. The sun is super bright during the day, but it gets a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings, resulting in a massive temperature drop. Accommodation options near Uluru are fairly limited and mostly on the pricey side. If you want to kick back and experience nature without blowing your budget, the Outback Lodge, where I stayed this time, is a highly recommended option. Outback Lodge operates like a youth hostel with a super down-to-earth vibe and a very international crowd. The property is located right next to parts of the resort. The biggest surprise is its massive outdoor communal area—complete with a large swimming pool, though it's probably best saved for the summer months~ Additionally, the lodge has several lookout points. Whether you're chasing the sunrise in the morning or catching the sunset in the evening, the colors reflecting off the giant red rock from different angles are absolutely mind-blowing—you can never have enough camera memory for this! From here, you can also take in the spectacular surrounding desert landscape, and it's an incredible spot for stargazing at night! 😍 Every evening, the space outside the communal area transforms into a DIY barbecue zone, though the BBQ does cost a little extra. Honestly, though, sitting outdoors, chilling with some steak, and listening to live music creates a wild, vibrant atmosphere that you just can't find in the city! Facility-wise, they offer a shared kitchen and bathrooms. It's absolutely perfect for backpackers or anyone on a budget. The washrooms are spotless and thoughtfully equipped with things like hair dryers. ✌🏻 Travel Tips You absolutely must buy your national park pass online in advance before coming to Uluru, or you won't be able to access the designated areas. Since it's an inland desert climate, the temperature difference between day and night is insane. Packing a down jacket or a thick coat is a must! The midday sun is incredibly intense. Remember to pack plenty of water, slather on that sunscreen, and wear a hat and sunglasses. The starry skies here at night are gorgeous. 📅 Itinerary ⭐️Day 1: Flying from Japan to Sydney! (Spending the night on the plane) ⭐️Day 2: Touched down in the morning and went straight to a cafe. Since the chiffon cake was sold out, I opted for the tiramisu—it was delicious! The coffee was top-notch too. I spent the day sightseeing at QVB, the Opera House, and the Harbour Bridge, all of which were easily walkable 🚶. Dinner was Aussie beef followed by some frozen yogurt, then a relaxing stroll along the harbor 😌. Spent the night in the city. ⭐️Day 3: Off to Uluru. I joined the "Sounds of Silence" tour, which included sunset views, dinner, and stargazing 🌆. Having champagne during sunset was pure bliss 🥂. Dinner was an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring kangaroo, lamb, and plenty of desserts 🍖🥗. To top it off, they killed the lights for a stargazing session where we saw the Milky Way and the Southern Cross—hands down the best starry sky I've ever seen 🌌. No flash photography allowed, so sadly no food pics 😢. Although the PR video suggested formal attire, everyone was actually pretty casual in T-shirts. ⭐️Day 4: Joined a camel sunset tour 🐪🌄. We caught views of both Uluru and Kata Tjuta, and it even came with bread and coffee! The bread seemed like a traditional, hearty style. With goats 🐐 and baby camels 🐪 nearby, it felt like being at a petting zoo. Next, we headed to Uluru for a 3-hour hike covering three different trails and a visit to the Cultural Centre 🥾 (we actually made better time than the guidebook predicted!). Seeing the ancient wall paintings and local flora was fascinating. For dinner, we had a BBQ at the Outback Hotel 🍖, where I tried emu, camel, and kangaroo sausages, plus buffalo. It definitely had a "wild" flavor! ⭐️Day 5: After breakfast, we took a short walk to the lookout for one last look at Ayers Rock ♡. We hopped on the shuttle to the airport about two hours before departure. The airport has a cute gift shop, a cafe, and some interesting history of Uluru on the walls 🇦🇺. We flew back to Sydney and used a 2-hour layover to zip to a nearby supermarket by train. I used up my cash on souvenirs, then headed back to the airport for some final duty-free shopping. ⭐️Day 6: Back in Japan by early morning. The trip flew by! If I’d had one more day, I would’ve loved to explore Kata Tjuta more. 🏨 Stay: Desert Gardens Hotel 🍴 Foodie Finds: Cafe: The Grounds of the City Froyo: Yo-Chi Steak: Alfie’s 📌 Pro-Tip: It's a cashless world out there—everything was credit card only. Also, definitely book the hotel breakfast. It runs until 10:00 AM, so you can still catch it even after an early camel tour ✌️

Uluṟu creates two very different sunset photographs, depending on which official viewing area you choose. Choose the Uluṟu car sunset viewing area for the famous colour change. The sun sets behind you, lighting the entire rock as it shifts through pink, bright orange and deep red. This is the classic first-visit view. Arrive early and continue towards the far end of the parking area for a clearer composition. 📸 Choose Talinguṟu Nyakunytjaku when you want the setting sun beside Uluṟu. Trees and desert vegetation can frame the scene, while the platforms and walking tracks give you more angles. It is the main sunrise area, but the park says it is often almost empty at sunset. 🌿 The practical difference matters too. The car sunset area is 15 to 20 minutes from Yulara and has no water or toilets. Talinguṟu is about 35 minutes away and has both facilities. For a first sunset, choose the car viewing area. Pick Talinguṟu for a quieter solar-disc composition. Photograph Uluṟu as a whole rather than zooming into culturally sensitive details, and leave before the park closes. As the name suggests, Fun Over Fifties was absolutely “brilliant.” From the accommodation, food, tours, guiding, to the wonderful people on the trip, everything was well-organized. The price covered everything except two meals and alcoholic beverages, with no other hidden costs. FOF even provided some extra treats like drinks and ice cream at various sites. When rain at Uluṟu forced the cancellation of the Sounds of Silence dinner, our exceptional tour hostess Annette arranged the “Wintjiri Wiru” experience as an alternative, ensuring we still had a great time. The rain also caused low clouds during our scheduled helicopter flights over Uluṟu and the Olges. Impressively, Annette managed to rebook our flight for the following day before our departure, and refunds were given to those who couldn’t reschedule due to earlier flights. While it was disappointing for some, weather is beyond control. We were fortunate to witness the outback in full bloom, a rare sight that typically occurs only every 10 years. Suzanne and I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in Australia’s history but wanting to avoid the hassle of driving. This was our second trip with FOF, following our first from Darwin to Broome, and once again, it was “brilliant.”
