The most surprising part was hearing the owner recount the story of bean noodle pressing: a traditional technique dating back to the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, a recipe passed down for eight generations, and even the pressing tools are centuries old! Today, I'm sharing a list of some of the best restaurants in Datong Ancient City. Just go for it! [Fenglin Pavilion] The "World's No. 1 Bamboo Shrimp" is a must-try. It's truly delicious, but it can get a bit crowded during peak season, so you need to get a number in advance. ❗ ⭕ Lunch numbers will be posted on dz.com at 9:00 AM and dinner numbers at 3:30 PM. You can get a number online. Be prepared a few minutes in advance and click in when the number is about to refresh. If it doesn't refresh, log out and then click in again. Try a few times, and when the number screen refreshes, click Submit. You'll almost always get a number. ⭕ After getting a number, you can explore other areas, but be sure to pay attention to the call time. Once your number is called, it's gone, and you'll have to queue again, which is quite a hassle. [Xijindao] We went to the Huayan Temple branch this time. There was a table, so we went in and ordered right away. The restaurant has a nice, quiet, and elegant atmosphere. The pork noodles were just okay, and the skewers were good, a little salty, but still quite fragrant. If you're looking for value, I wouldn't recommend this place. [Jinbei Liulao Laodoumian] I highly recommend trying this place. The noodles are a mix of pea and white flour, and the broth is rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of saltiness. The price is reasonable, and it offers a better value than other restaurants. [Zini 369 Coarse Grain Season (Gulou Branch)] This restaurant is located inside the Old City. During peak season, the lines can be long, and they only accept in-person reservations. ❗ So, we recommend going to their branch outside the Old City to avoid wasting time waiting in line. 🧆 Their coarse grains are excellent. The oat noodles with scallion oil, oat noodle dumplings, and braised oat noodles with pickled cabbage and eggplant are all delicious. The other dishes are also quite tasty, and overall, it's quite affordable. Finally, I'd like to recommend a snack outside the city walls. 🥰 [Guo's Braised Pork Roll Spicy Mix] Small 10 yuan, large (with noodles) 14 yuan.
