Whenever I visit Taizhou, I always have to visit Uncle Rong's. I took a taxi to Rongcun, the home of Xin Rongji in the county. I was hoping for some home-style cooking, but Uncle Rong is surprisingly specialized. The dishes at Rongcun, Rongzhuang, Rong Xiaoguan, and Xin Rongji are nearly identical, and the prices aren't much different. Honestly, my favorites are the rice cakes and tofu. The large rooster at the entrance instantly identifies Uncle Rong's restaurant. A large stone tablet inscribed with "Rongcun" is also quite impressive. Entering the restaurant, the large glass bathtub is quite impressive. There's no menu, just dishes, and the selection is quite limited. The prices are quite high for Xianju, and they don't even have hairtail. Sand garlic bean noodles are another Uncle Rong's classic. The small portion was perfectly adequate for two, and the service was up to Xin Rongji standards. The dish is classic and worth a try. The brown sugar rice cakes are excellent as a main course. As a Taizhou specialty, they're definitely the sticky, glutinous kind. Soy products are also a Taizhou specialty.
