Millennium City Park

4.6/5
28.9k reviews
Millennium City Park is located by the Longting Lake in Kaifeng, a large-scale historical and cultural theme park that faithfully recreates the Northern Song Dynasty's capital based on the famous painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" by artist Zhang Zeduan, following the original layout at a 1:1 scale. The park is divided into two sections by the Shuangting Bridge: the southern area recreates the bustling urban life of Bianjing, with taverns, teahouses, pawnshops, and artisan workshops lining the streets, where peddlers with shoulder poles and shouting shop assistants move about; while the northern area features imperial gardens, with lakeside halls and quadrangular courtyards standing by the water. Staff and vendors throughout the park wear Song-style attire, accompanied by ancient music and the rhythmic sounds of bells and drums, creating the illusion of "stepping into a painting and traveling back a thousand years in a single day." The architecture here offers visually striking highlights: the Rainbow Bridge spanning the Bian River replicates the famous bridge from ancient paintings, arching like a rainbow—watching grain barges pass beneath recreates the painting's ambiance. Fuyun Pavilion towers above all other structures with its crimson facade and golden-roofed eaves, offering panoramic garden views. The reconstructed Shangshan Gate mirrors Kaifeng's Northern Song dynasty city gates, standing majestic with resplendent paintings as the garden's most imposing structure. Waterside pavilions like Shuixin Xie, Double Pavilion Bridge, and Nine Dragons Bridge dot the emerald waters in picturesque harmony. The daytime highlight is the scattered live performances throughout the park: "Judge Bao inspecting the Bian River grain transport" unfolds on the water by Rainbow Bridge, "Squire Wang's daughter seeking a husband" brings the embroidered ball tossing matchmaking to the streets, and "Yue Fei unhorsing Prince Xiao Liang" stirs up dust with galloping hooves in the drill ground. Folk performances like cockfighting, stilt walking, cuju (ancient football), and pan drumming are interspersed throughout. Families with children can visit Fun Garden and Great Song Games to try archery, dart throwing, rope climbing, and hoop diving—experiencing every Song dynasty game from a thousand years ago—or dress in period costumes at Square Courtyard to take mock imperial exams. Street-side workshops showcase folk crafts like Bian embroidery, Zhuxian Town woodblock prints, official kiln porcelain, and dough figurines, where visitors can watch artisans at work. The park takes on a different face after nightfall: red lanterns light up one after another, and the streets are ablaze with lights, making it seem like a completely different place from daytime. The large-scale water show "Northern Song Dynasty: Splendid Dreams of Dongjing" is performed on Jinglong Lake. The entire show is connected by eight classic Song Dynasty poems and a scroll of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival," transporting the audience back to Dongjing of the Northern Song Dynasty a thousand years ago. The performance lasts approx. 70 minutes, and many travelers specifically reserve their itinerary for the evening to wait for this show. After the performance, you might as well climb the Shangshan Gate tower to overlook the park scenery and the night view of Kaifeng under the lights. Dining in the park is also convenient: the snack street and night market around the Dongjing food area gather Kaifeng snacks like soup dumplings and mutton pancake, perfect for eating while strolling; for a proper sit-down meal, head to Sunyang Restaurant, a recreation of the "main shop" depicted in paintings, and try traditional Henan dishes such as soup dumplings and carp with noodles.Kaifeng · 3.3km from downtown

Song Du Huangcheng Cultural Tourism Resort is located in the northern part of the old city of Kaifeng, precisely on the site of the imperial palace of the Northern Song Dynasty's Dongjing city. The millennium-old central axis of Kaifeng runs through this area, making it the core zone of the royal culture of the Song Dynasty. Here, you can find the Song-style imperial architecture of the Longting attraction, the tales of the Yang Family Generals at Tianbo Yang's residence, and the calligraphic steles of Han Yuan Stele Forest. The Shuanglong Lane historical and cultural block, 960 Cultural and Creative Park, and Qisheng Corner have transformed old streets and courtyards into Song-style blocks perfect for leisurely exploration. The resort also connects a series of Song culture attractions: Wansui Mountain Great Song Martial Arts City stages year-round martial arts live shows and intangible cultural heritage iron fireworks, while historic sites like the Iron Pagoda, Kaifeng city wall, Zhouqiao and Bian River ruins, Shanshangan Guild Hall, Yanqing Taoist Temple, and Fan Pagoda are scattered across the old city, along with niche spots like the underground wartime grain storage. These places are hard to cover in one day, so we recommend focusing on two or three key sites. After dark, a different experience awaits as the attractions light up in unison. Boarding a painted pleasure boat on the Great Song Imperial River to watch the illuminated pavilions and towers sway with the rippling water is a popular nightlife option here.Kaifeng · 4.2km from downtown

Wansuishan Martial Arts City is located in the northwest of Kaifeng's urban areaWansuishan Martial Arts City, it is a large-scale attraction built with Song Dynasty culture and wuxia culture as its backdrop. Within the attraction, there are quaint and charming Song Dynasty garden streets and alleys, year-round exciting wuxia and period costume performances, as well as a wealth of entertainment facilities, making it a great place for relaxation and entertainment in Kaifeng, Zhengzhou, and surrounding areas. When visiting Wansuishan Martial Arts City, the first thing you will notice is the beautiful scenery of the attraction. Wansuishan Martial Arts City as a whole creates an atmosphere of the Song Dynasty, among which many views are very eye-catching, such as Wansui Temple, which recreates the splendor of a thousand-year-old ancient temple from the Song Dynasty, the Dragon Altar, which embodies the spirit of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, the relatively well-preserved ancient city wall of Kaifeng in China, and the "Nine Dragons Waterfall," one of the large man-made stream and waterfall groups in China. What is rare is that the attraction also has a very large area of forest and green space, with a quiet environment, and flowers bloom in season, making it very suitable for photography. Afterward, visitors will notice the unique wuxia features within the attraction. Year-round, multiple wuxia-themed performances are staged here, with several themed shows such as "Cross Slope," "Wu Song Drunkenly Beats Jiang the Gatekeeper," and "Wild Boar Forest" being quite spectacular—definitely not to be missed when visiting. Interactive performances like the "Wuxia Film and Television Experience Hall," "Martial Arts Champion," and "Li Kui Judges a Case" also allow visitors to participate in wuxia stories, offering plenty of fun. In the architectural design of the attraction, there are also many wuxia elements: the Wuxia Road built with large-scale weapons such as the "Heaven-Reliant Sword" and "Overlord Blade," the "Gallant Heroes Portrait" at the Great Song Martial Arts Hall, the "Sword Altar" at Cross Slope, Juxian Manor, and the Martial Arts Arena—all are uniquely distinctive. Additionally, every year during the Spring Festival periodWansuishanLarge-scale temple fairs are held, featuring grand performances, a rich variety of specialty snacks, a dazzling array of handicrafts, and highly distinctive entertainment activities, creating a lively atmosphere. It has now become one of the most popular temple fairs in the Central Plains region.Kaifeng · 4.6km from downtown

During the Northern Song dynasty, Kaifeng Fu (Kaifeng Palace) was where Bao Zheng, the renowned "Justice Bao," served as the prefect. The original Kaifeng Fu of the Song dynasty was long destroyed by floods. What travelers see today is a recently reconstructed artificial ancient-style attraction. The gate of Kaifeng Fu (Kaifeng Palace) faces south, and travelers enter the attraction from here to begin their visit. The attraction is centered on buildings such as the main hall, conference hall, and Meihua hall, flanked by Kaifeng Fu-Tianqing temple, Mingli courtyard, Kaifeng Fu-Qianlong palace, Qingxin tower,Prison, Yingwu Tower, Yinbin Hall, and other halls of various sizes. Each hall is relatively small in scale. Travelers can follow the attraction map to visit the attractions along the central axis before exploring some attractions on both sides. Travelers can view the interior scenes of a Northern Song government office in the main hall and council chamber along the central axis. In the plum blossom hall in the northern part of the attraction, there are recreated scenes of Judge Bao adjudicating cases while "sitting southward in the yamen," complete with wax figures. West of the main gate, the view includes a prison office, Kaifeng Fu (Kaifeng Palace)-prison temple, death row cells, and gendered prison cells—all arranged with sculptures, torture devices, and scenes reflecting the penal administration of the Northern Song period. In the Qianlong hall and Qingxin tower east of the central axis, travelers can see statues of emperors Taizong, Zhenzong, and Qinzong of the Song dynasty, along with biographical introductions of all Kaifeng magistrates from the Northern Song era. Travelers can also watch many historical reenactment performances when visiting the attraction, such as "Yamen opening ceremony" and "Judge Bao presiding over a case".Kaifeng · 3.7km from downtown

The Kaifeng Museum is a comprehensive museum integrating cultural relic collection, preservation, research, exhibition, and social education. It houses over 80,000 cultural relics, covering various categories such as pottery, porcelain, bronze ware, calligraphy and painting, stone carving, jade ware, and lacquerware. The museum was first established on Sansheng street in 1962, on the former site left after the Henan museum moved to Zhengzhou. The old museum by Baogong lake opened in 1988, and in March 2018, it relocated to its current new site. The new museum's layout draws inspiration from the triple-city design of Kaifeng during the Northern Song dynasty, consisting of an outer perimeter, a circular inner courtyard, and a central main structure. Following the principle of "classical exterior, modern interior," lower surrounding buildings embrace the towering central pavilion. From a distance, it appears as a Song-style architectural complex, immersing visitors in the essence of Song culture even before entering. The Kaifeng museum was established in March 1962. Its original site was located on Sansheng street, built on the former site of the Henan museum after it moved to Zhengzhou. In 1986, a new museum was expanded by the scenic Baogong lake and opened to the public in September 1988, becoming a major cultural event in Kaifeng. In recent years, to promote the continued development and prosperity of Kaifeng's museum industry and the construction of Kaifeng as an international cultural tourism city, the new Kaifeng museum officially began construction in March 2014 and opened to the public in March 2018. The new Kaifeng museum is located on the north side of Zhengkai avenue between the fifth and sixth streets in the Kaifeng new district, adjacent to Zhongyi lake to the east, with a total construction area of 54,286 m². The overall architectural design highlights the triple-city layout characteristic of Kaifeng during the Northern Song dynasty, consisting of an outer perimeter, a circular inner courtyard, and a central main structure. The design follows the principle of "classical exterior, modern interior," with lower surrounding buildings embracing the towering central pavilion, reflecting the architectural features of Song dynasty building complexes. The first floor of the Kaifeng museum's Zhongyi lake section consists of a public service area, exhibition area, and cultural relic restoration area. The public service area includes: a visitor center, an academic lecture hall, an educational experience zone, a cultural and creative display center, a 4D cinema, and a VIP reception room. The exhibition area features six thematic exhibition halls—"New year paintings of Zhuxian town in Kaifeng: Artistic charm of woodblock prints," "Kaifeng's modern and contemporary calligraphy and painting masterpieces: Elegance of ink and color," "Millennium imprints: A selection of stone carvings from the collection," "Imperial splendor: Royal artifacts of the Ming and Qing dynasties," "The premier prefecture: A special exhibition on the Northern Song Kaifeng government office," and "Science and technology of the Song dynasty"—along with two temporary exhibition halls, covering a total area of 5000 m². The second floor consists of a basic exhibition area, meeting rooms, and office space. The total exhibition area on the second floor is 7355 m², featuring 8 exhibition halls, including "Kaifeng ancient history and culture exhibition: A millennium capital of eight dynasties," "Kaifeng memories: Modern and contemporary social life exhibition," and the Dasheng music and dance performance hall. Among these, the "Kaifeng ancient history and culture exhibition: A millennium capital of eight dynasties" covers an area of 4840 m², highlighting the history of the Northern Song Dynasty as the capital. Within this section, approx. 700 m² is dedicated to a special exhibition hall for the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, displaying various versions, creative forms, and materials of artifacts and historical materials related to the painting across different periods.Kaifeng · 5km from downtown

Daxiangguo Temple, originally named Jianguo Temple, is the place where Lu Zhishen uprooted a willow tree in "Water Margin." The temple was first built in 555 AD during the Northern Qi Dynasty. In 712 AD, Emperor Ruizong of Tang, Li Dan, renamed it "Daxiangguo Temple" to commemorate his ascension to the throne as the Prince of Xiang and personally inscribed the plaque. The temple reached its peak during the Northern Song Dynasty, serving as the imperial temple at that time. Most of the current structures in Daxiangguo Temple were rebuilt in recent years, and the temple's scale is much smaller than it was in its heyday. After entering the temple gate, you will encounter the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats, and the Scripture Tower in sequence. The Arhat Hall, commonly known as the "Hall of Five Hundred Arhats," is an octagonal corridor-style structure. Inside the hall's corridor, there is a large group sculpture titled "Sakyamuni Preaching the Dharma," featuring five hundred arhats in various vivid poses. At the center of the Arhat Hall, travelers can also admire a wooden octagonal pavilion housing a approx. 6 m tall wooden statue of the "Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin." This statue, a cultural relic from the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, was carved from a single ginkgo tree. Each of its four sides has six large arms and over 200 small arms, with each small palm bearing a wisdom eye—totaling more than 1,000 eyes, hence its name. The sutra depository is located in the rear part of the temple complex and now serves as the activity venue for Kaifeng calligraphy and painting academy. The building is adorned with calligraphy and painting works in various styles, which travelers can view or purchase. The bell tower also houses a large bronze bell cast during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty (1768), a precious cultural relic of the temple.Kaifeng · 4.4km from downtown

The Longting scenic area is a famous attraction in the ancient city of Kaifeng and a representative of Kaifeng's cultural relics. However, it is not actually a pavilion but a grand hall built on a massive blue brick platform base standing 13 m high. Today, the Longting scenic area, along with the Yang family lake and Pan family lake, forms Longting park. This site was once the palace ruins of the Later Liang, Later Jin, Later Han, Later Zhou dynasties during the Five Dynasties period, as well as the Northern Song and Jin dynasties. The Longting scenic area faces south and stands tall on a platform base. There are 72 steps from the ground to the main hall, with stone steps carved with cloud and dragon patterns in the middle. After ascending the platform and viewing the displayed cultural relics in the hall, you can enjoy the scenery of the ancient city of Kaifeng from the stone railings. In front of the Longting scenic area lies a straight avenue flanked by two lakes facing each other from east to west - the Pan family lake to the east and the Yang family lake to the west. On the west side below the steps of the Longting Scenic Area, there are several side halls, one of which houses a wax museum reflecting the history of the Song Dynasty. The museum presents major political, economic, and cultural events during the reigns of the nine emperors of the Northern Song Dynasty through nine sets of wax figures. Each wax figure is meticulously designed based on historical facts. The most striking set depicts Wang Anshi's political reforms, featuring only three main figures. Seated on the central throne is Zhao Xu, the sixth emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty, wearing a light-yellow dragon robe with a red jade belt around his waist. His head is slightly tilted to the left as he gazes at and attentively listens to a minister seated on his left. This minister is Wang Anshi, whom Emperor Shenzong promoted to chancellor to advocate for reforms. On the other side sits another minister, Sima Guang, who opposed the reforms and is shown deep in thought with his head bowed. Every golden fall in October (mid-October to mid-November), as the main venue of the internationally renowned Kaifeng chrysanthemum festival, Longting scenic area presents a magnificent display with thousands of unique chrysanthemum varieties competing in beauty. Visitors to Longting scenic area also have the opportunity to watch historical performances based on Song dynasty court culture.Kaifeng · 4.1km from downtown

It's convenient to visit Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden, and easy to come back and rest after a long day of sightseeing. The guesthouse has a great environment and good service, and the breakfast is handmade, nutritious, and delicious. I had a great time and a comfortable stay for three days, and I would definitely recommend it to my friends!

It's very worthwhile, but it's also very crowded, which might slightly detract from the overall experience. However, the people are incredibly welcoming, and there are many beautiful spots for taking photos. The food is also affordable and inexpensive, which kids enjoy. I'll definitely go back when it's less crowded.

This is my second visit to Wansui Mountain. Every time I visit Kaifeng, this is the only place I can explore because it's so much fun! Many of the popular NPCs can keep me there all day; there's just no room to move. The scenery is vast. There are people interacting with everything. You can play games from morning till night. Everyone, from NPCs to security guards, cleaners, and shopkeepers, is incredibly welcoming, making you feel happy. There are so many activities! Prices are cheap, and there are plenty of restrooms, so you don't have to worry about finding one. The cleaning is excellent; you won't feel uncomfortable at all. Every staff member is exceptionally nice; no wonder it's ranked number one in the country. It's all thanks to the hard work of every staff member. Kudos to the operations team and all the cultural and tourism professionals!

Kaifeng Prefecture felt like a completely artificial tourist attraction. All the replica ancient buildings were too new, and the exhibits inside were too outdated, especially the clothing in the glass cases of the tallest building – the dust was so thick, and there weren't any bright lights; elderly people were practically feeling their way around inside. The shows weren't particularly interesting either. I much preferred the interactive experience with the NPCs at Qingming Riverside Park. I guess I'll only be interested in that place when I'm older!

The banks of the Bian River are brightly lit at night, which is very beautiful. There are also many performances along the way. After dinner, you can take a boat to enjoy the scenery, which is perfect. It costs 50 yuan per person, which is not bad. After boarding the boat, you can stroll around the Xisi Night Market and have a late-night snack.

Personally, I think the Iron Pagoda Park is the most worthwhile attraction to visit in Kaifeng. There are actually many cultural performances in the park, but many tourists may not notice them. The most memorable thing is the free guided tours, which are really great! 👍 The Iron Pagoda is a building from the Northern Song Dynasty and is definitely worth seeing when you come to Kaifeng!

I happened to be there during the chrysanthemum exhibition, so I bought a combined ticket for three attractions. The price wasn't expensive, but it was incredibly crowded. I went on a Monday, and the experience was quite unpleasant due to the crowds. The restrooms in the scenic area were also unsanitary. Longting Park, as the main venue, has a wide variety of chrysanthemums, and you can enjoy them as you walk around. If you go at the right time, you can even catch a performance. If you're interested, you can go.

The location is excellent; the Bao Gong Temple is built over a lake, and the elegant, Song Dynasty-style architecture creates a tranquil environment. Inside, you can learn about historical anecdotes related to Bao Gong. The bronze and wax statues are particularly interesting. The park isn't large; an hour is enough to stroll around at a leisurely pace, making it well worth a visit.
