Canals area

The old canal of Utrecht runs through the city center. Construction work on the canal began in 1122 and the excavated ground was used to raise the sides of the canal to reduce the possibility of flooding. When the city's gate system was completed in 1275, the water level was constant, so permanent dry cellars and new piers could be built on the water level, and today these areas have been converted into restaurants and cafes, bringing its features to the old town of Utrecht.

The canal area is the most lively and bustling place. There are a lot of shops along the canal, many cafes and restaurants, and there are many museums of all sizes. It is a place to visit here.
