#easytravelpost El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve (119,177 ha) sits on the Sierra Madre del Sur crest above Mapastepec, one of the largest mountain cloud forests in Mexico and the only reliable wild home of the horned guan (Oreophasis derbianus). Access is strictly controlled by CONANP: entry 215 MXN/day (50% student, free under 12/senior), permit arranged in advance via the Tuxtla or Mapastepec office, daily visitor cap enforced, and you must go with a registered community guide from Santa Rita or Nuevo Paraíso. Tuxtla Gutiérrez→Mapastepec 4 hrs bus, Mapastepec→Santa Rita 26 km, then 68 km up to Puerta a la Montaña eco-centre (4×4 only, usually the guide's truck). Best Oct–May.

I flew to Tuxtla, bus'd to Mapastepec (sleep 400 MXN), next dawn rode with a Santa Rita cooperative guide up to the 1,800 m ridge camp. The moss is the cloud forest proper: Thuidium on the Quercus and Clethra boughs 1 cm thick, Sphagnum in the ridge seep 3 cm, 11°C in February dawn, a resplendent quetzal rattling 20 m up, then at 07:40 the guide froze — a horned guan on a lichen branch 15 m away, red horns clear through bins. I ate a 60 MXN Santa Rita tamale at the camp, moss on the interpretation-sign post black-green with drip, watched the ridge vanish into cloud by 09:30.

Mistake: I emailed CONANP 3 days out — permit denied, had to rebook 3 weeks later; apply 3–4 weeks ahead, Oct–Feb fills fast. Another: the 215 MXN is cash at the gate, no card, and the 4×4 ride from Santa Rita is separate (≈1,500 MXN shared). Would you pay 215 MXN + guide-share + 3-week permit wait for the El Triunfo ridge horned-guan mossy dawn, or skip it and do the easier (no permit) Chiapas Montebello pine-forest instead?
