The advantage of traveling alone is that you can completely indulge in laziness. You don't have to cater to the preferences of your travel companions, nor do you have to follow anyone else's pace. You can sleep in until the sun is high in the sky without feeling guilty about wasting time. If you want to stay up all night stargazing, you can sit on a mountaintop and enjoy the breeze for half the night without anyone urging you to go back to sleep. If you see a pretty handicraft stall by the roadside, you can squat down and chat with the owner for an hour, listening to the story behind each little trinket. If you see a temple in the mountains, you can push open the door, add some oil to the incense, and chat with the old monk about Zen for half a day. Even if you take the wrong route and go a long way, you won't be angry or annoyed. After all, there's no destination you absolutely have to reach. Instead, you can see different scenery along the wrong route—perhaps a wild fruit grove hidden in a mountain valley, or perhaps a rose bush blooming vibrantly outside a house halfway up the mountain. These unexpected discoveries are more memorable than planned tourist attractions.
