Thorn, located in the southeastern Netherlands province of Limburg, near the Belgian border and the Meuse River, has a population of approximately 2,500. This historic town, known as the "White Town" of the Netherlands due to the predominantly whitewashed old town buildings, dates back to the 10th century, initially developing as a monastery. During the Middle Ages, it became a unique abbey estate for noblewomen, with the abbesses wielding considerable administrative and judicial power, making Thorn a distinctive micro-political entity within the Holy Roman Empire. This special status continued until the French occupation in 1794, ending the monastic system. Thorn's famous white architecture is related to the French colonial period. At that time, a tax system was implemented based on the size of windows and doors; some residents closed some windows to reduce their tax burden, and later whitewashed their walls, gradually creating the unified and distinctive white architectural style we see today.
