The Colorado Plateau is one of the most spectacular landscapes in the American Southwest, covering parts of Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. It is famous for its enormous red-rock formations, deep canyons, mesas, arches, and desert landscapes.

The plateau is especially fascinating because its landscape exposes millions of years of geological history. Different layers of sandstone, limestone and other rocks create the striking red, orange, cream and brown colors seen throughout the region.

Best time: April–May and September–October for generally more comfortable temperatures. Summer can be extremely hot, particularly in lower-elevation desert areas.
