My daughter and I visited Ben's during our trip from Australia. Decor was straight out of a 1930's NY movie - great! Service by a very experienced waitress was excellent. Due to our ignorance we over ordered. In retrospect our waitress should have warned us. We had matzo ball/chicken soup, chopped liver to share and latkes (3 plus apple sauce). In addition we were served the complimentary pickles and coleslaw. The potato pancakes were overcooked and hard. The downside that spoiled the occasion for us was tipping. We come from a country where tipping is almost unknown and wages are set at an appropriate living wage (about $20 per hour). The check was s $40.89 - I tipped $7 and my daughter found the exact change to cover the check including tax. On asking for a copy of the check for my daughter's "trip diary" we treated like pariahs. What should we do next time?
