House of Vegetarian is my go-to restaurant for oily, salty, delicious Chinese food. As someone with seafood allergies, I've been relying on this place for cheap, satisfying sustenance for almost two decades and it never disappoints. Mind you, I am not patronizing House of Vegetarian because I'm trying to stay healthy, merely out of the emergency room. If you keep this is mind, you can decide whether this restaurant is for you or not for you. The decor is classic Chinatown. Blinding fluorescent lighting, vinyl seating, dining area decorated with faded prints of vegetables. Am I coming here for the romantic or stylish ambiance? No, I'm coming to stuff my face. One aspect I really like about House of Vegetarian is that a lot of diners here are eating alone. You can bring a book or magazine with you and have a pleasant solo meal. It's also a great place to bring a friend and linger over a giant pot of tea, plates of appetizers, and not be hurried by the wait staff, all of whom are middle aged women and thus instantly endeared to me as a fellow middle-aged woman. No loud music either. Hooray. As a Chinese friend once jokingly told me, you must be northern Chinese. (NB: I'm not even Asian). I always order a pan-fried noodle dish and try to vary the appetizers -- they have a great selection -- with at least one mushroom dish. Everything arrives glistening in oil. Oh so satisfying. Soups are good, too. They offer a range of mock meats, but you can just order vegetables. I'm not sure why this listing has three dollar signs ($$$) denoting prices. It's very inexpensive, $$ at the most.
