I booked a budget rental car so I arrived at Christchurch International Airport and was able to complete the procedure immediately at the counter in the airport.

I rented a car through Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, Moeraki Boulder Coast, Lake Wanaka and Queenstown.
I rented a car in the off-season ６ month, but I was hit by rain and snow in Lake Tekapo, but I was able to drive safely.
Also, from Queenstown to Milford Sound, I was able to experience the sunny Milford Sound by tour bus.
It was blessed with weather except Lake Tekapo and became the best memory.
The nature of New Zealand's South Island healed my heart.

Car is in good condition. It’s a small size SUV. And we found the size good to drive around town. But for the mountain windy roads I would upsize to a sturdier next time. The Bluetooth system was unpredictable making it hard to rely on for navigation. Sometimes we have to hold the phone up since the connection was not possible after many tries.
