Valerie Foster: The Risk of Sorrow | Changing Hands Bookstore
Feb 3, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Phoenix
Award-winning educator and author Valerie Foster presents her memoir, The Risk of Sorrow: Intimate Conversations with a Holocaust Survivor. ABOUT THE BOOK Helen Handler was just fifteen years old when she found herself alone in Auschwitz. The horrors she faced, family she lost, and lessons she learned would shape every moment of her life in ways few people could imagine. After rebuilding her life in America, and sharing her dramatic tale of survival to one group of high school students, she feels a unique connection with Irish-Catholic teacher, Valerie Foster, and entrusts her with her inspiring story. Helen bares her soul, challenging Valerie to listen, learn, and search her own self. The teacher becomes the student as their weekly visits begin to sculpt the profile of a Holocaust survivor as rarely seen before. More than a Holocaust memoir, The Risk of Sorrow is an intimate look at two women of different generations, religions, and cultures who forge an extraordinary friendship as together they examine deep questions of survival, faith, humanity, and love. This is a story for today's world. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Valerie Foster is an award-winning educator and author. The Risk of Sorrow: Intimate Conversations with a Holocaust Survivor is now archived in six countries. Her previous book, Dancing With a Demon, was named Best Nonfiction Narrative by American Book Fest and Finalist by International Book Awards. Ida Rose Florez - The End of Education as We Know It | Changing Hands Bookstore
Feb 9, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Phoenix
Learning scientist, systems-change expert, and educational psychologist Ida Rose Florez, Ph.D. presents her new book about regenerative learning for modern times. ABOUT THE BOOK It's time for a whole new way of doing school Schools play a critical role in defining our relationship to people and planet, but Western education has led us astray. It has done exactly what it was intended to do: create a workforce educated just enough to keep feeding the industrial capitalism machine. In doing so, it has failed our children. Education guru Ida Rose Florez argues that there is a better way. Reminiscent of John Taylor Gatto's educational manifestos, The End of Education as We Know It is a guidebook for transforming society by leveraging complex systems-thinking and reclaiming regenerative ways of learning. Far more than a call for education-reform-as-usual, this inspiring critique argues that the current system is on the brink of collapse. A growing number of people, grappling with climate realities, snowballing economic disparities, pandemics, and deepening incivility, long to live in ways that value mutual thriving for all. As demands for equity and sustainability increase, the modern education industrial complex is perilously unable to adapt. It's time for a whole new way of doing school. The End of Education as We Know It shows how to put regenerative values to work designing the kinds of schools our world needs. Required reading for parents, educators, policymakers, and anyone who cares deeply about the next generation. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ida Rose Florez, Ph.D. is a learning scientist, systems-change expert, and educational psychologist who is passionate about revitalizing regenerative practices in schools. A sought-after thought leader, she helps educational decision-makers reimagine learning amid unpredictable complexity and engages audiences through workshops and keynote speeches across the US and internationally. Ida Rose served as vice president of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, principal investigator on a US National Science Foundation STEM ecosystem grant, and led statewide educational initiatives in California and Arizona. A published author, her work has appeared in a multitude of parenting and women's magazines, education trade magazines, and peer-reviewed academic journals. She is a Certified Warm Data Host through Nora Bateson and the Bateson Institute, a Certified Human Systems Dynamics Professional, a certified master gardener, and a permaculture designer.
