However, if this doesn’t work for you, buggies are not a problem and Spike Island has space for a buggy park. You are welcome to feed your baby during the tour (chairs are available). Don't worry if you are running late, it can be hard getting anywhere on time with a baby! Jane PorterThe tours are led by Jane Porter, who worked as an arts Producer in Bristol for ten years before changing her career after having two children. She set up Bring Your Baby in 2017 as a response to what she felt was a lack of activities that were designed for parents during her own maternity leave. Behind the Scenes: Building Tour and Studio Artist Visits | Spike Island
Mar 15, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cumberland
Join us for a behind the scenes tour of Spike Island where two artists will open their studio doors to the public. This is a chance to explore the building’s unique architectural features and meet some of the artists based at Spike Island, learn about their practice and view works in progress. On this visit, we meet artists Iris Thorsteinsdottir and Jo Lathwood. Thorsteinsdottir is a photographer, who captures, not just moments frozen in time, but the intricate tapestry of emotions woven between landscapes and their inhabitants. Lathwood’s practice straddles drawing, sculptural works and large installations in both galleries and the public realm. IRIS THORSTEINSDOTTIR Iris Thorsteinsdottir is an Icelandic artist based in Bristol, UK. She holds a Master’s degree in photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Inspired by Iceland's captivating landscapes and rich folklore, her work explores the interplay between absence and presence, humanity and nature, and past and present. Recent projects focus on landscapes shaped by human presence and abandoned structures, inviting viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between human activity and the natural world. JO LATHWOOD Jo Lathwood is a queer artist who’s practice straddles drawing, sculptural works and large installations in both galleries and the public realm. The starting point for much of these works is a response to a particular site, event, material or process. Working with recycled timber, she has built a meandering staircase that travelled across three stories to facilitate the audience to touch the roof of a church. Experimenting with foundry technologies, she developed a way of casting lava into contemporary forms and though researching traditional techniques she has made inks from Oak Galls. These ideas have grown from a focus around making and an examination of our impact and relationship with the natural and built environment. Themes such as transitions, viewpoints, illusions, aspiration, environmentalism and anti-capitalism are woven throughout her practice. Lathwood is the Chair of the Board of Trustees for BRICKS Bristol. She was part of the EARTHart council at the University of Bristol (2017–2024). She was also the co-director of Ore and Ingot, an artist-led fine art bronze foundry in Bristol (2012–2018). TOUR SCHEDULE

Mar 18, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Cumberland
The Arrogant Worms have spent over three decades making fun of a big dumb world. Their songs have been played on the radio, the internet, and in outer space (on the space shuttle Endeavour). The Worms began at Queen’s University in 1991 when some members of the student cabaret group, The Queen’s Players, started writing songs and sketches for the campus radio station CFRC. Soon the group became The Arrogant Worms (Chris Patterson, Mike McCormick, and Trevor Strong) who have since toured ceaselessly across Canada (and select other parts of the world), released 13 albums, and recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Their song, The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, has been covered by bands such as Captain Tractor and The Longest Johns, and their Happy Happy birthday song is a viral sensation with over one hundred million views of the various fan videos on YouTube. More than thirty years after they began, The Arrogant Worms continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it.

Occasionally David Uses His Vocals To Create Harmonized Chants. Nothing is amplified, pre-recorded or rehearsed. Each set and performance is sonically pure, unique and completely improvised. www.crystaljourney.ca For more info about the music. ____________________________________________ About The Instruments: Paiste Gongs: Planet Gongs are tuned to the natural harmonic series based on the orbital properties of the Earth, Moon, Sun, and Planets. All of these gongs resonate in harmony with the celestial bodies and communicate a distinct aspect of the Music of the Spheres, which was first documented by Pythagoras in the 6th Century BC. Each planet gong contributes a vital pitch to the total harmonic resonance of our solar system. Crystal Bowls: The bowls are made of 99.992% crushed quartz crystal that is heated to 4000 degrees in a centrifugal mold. The thickness of the bowl determines the note, digitally tuned to C D E F G A and B corresponding to the charkas, our energy centers; root (C), sacral (D), solar plexus (E), heart (F), throat (G), third eye (A), and crown (B). The diameter of the bowl determines the pitch, ranging from 6 inches to 22 inches. The archetype of the instrument may be seen in a harp, carried horizontally and struck with two sticks, found in iconographical documents of the ancient Babylonian (1600-911 BCE) and neo-Assyrian (911-612 BCE) eras. Persian Santoor: Persian Santoor consists of a trapeziform case made of walnut wood, approximately 90 cm wide at the broad end, 36 cm wide at the narrow end and 6 cm deep. The strings are fixed to hitch-pins along the left-hand side and wound round metal wrest-pins on the right by means of which they are tuned with a tuning-key (Tuning Wrench). Each quadruple set of strings rests on a movable bridge of hardwood (kharak). The bridges are placed so that the strings are divided into three sections, giving the fundamental note and two higher octaves. There are nine (or sometimes 10, 11 and 12) quadruple strings an either side so that, with 18 groups of strings, 27 different notes can be played. The bass strings are of brass or copper and the trebles of steel. Persian Santoor is played by striking the strings with two light hammers (mezrab) held in three fingers of each hand. The ends of the sticks are usually covered with cloth to soften their impact on the strings. Harmonica: The harmonica, also known as a French harp or mouth organ, is a free reed wind instrument used worldwide in many musical genres, notably in blues, American folk music, classical music, jazz, country, and rock and roll. There are many types of harmonica, including diatonic, chromatic, tremolo, octave, orchestral, and bass versions. A harmonica is played by using the mouth (lips and tongue) to direct air into or out of one or more holes along a mouthpiece. Behind each hole is a chamber containing at least one reed. A harmonica reed is a flat elongated spring typically made of brass, stainless steel, or bronze.

Launch event: Donald Locke 'Resistant Forms' | Spike Island
May 30, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cumberland
Join us for an evening preview of new Spike Island exhibition: Donald Locke: Resistant Forms DONALD LOCKE
RESISTANT FORMS Spike Island presents the first major survey exhibition of Guyanese-British artist Donald Locke (1930–2010). Locke was born and raised in Guyana and first moved to the UK in the 1950s to study at Bath Academy of Art and Edinburgh School of Art. He then lived between London and Georgetown for the next twenty years, before settling in the United States in the late 1970s. The exhibition at Spike Island explores the development of his work across Guyana, the UK and the United States over five decades, from the late 1960s to the early 2000s. It features over eighty works, from early ceramics that evoke human and natural forms to mixed-media sculptures and monochromatic black paintings from the 1970s. Also included are several large-scale paintings from the 1990s that incorporate found images along with ceramic, metal and wood elements. These materials reflect Locke’s evolving approach to the use of different media, his formal ingenuity and the growing influence of African American vernacular art and iconography, following his relocation to the United States. Though Locke lived and worked in many places during his life, his exploration of issues of history, identity and subjugation was a constant. This is evident in his use of forms and symbols that echo the legacies of colonialism in his native Guyana and the racial politics of the American Civil War, from sculptures exploring plantation architecture to paintings that incorporate found photographs of Confederate and Union soldiers. Above all, however, Locke wanted to give form and visibility to the unique and hybrid contributions of Black culture to modernity, which is evident in the broad range of materials and stylistic approaches that he adopted throughout his career.
